This work deals with noise removal by the use of an edge preserving method whose parameters are automatically estimated, for any application, by simply providing information about the standard deviation noise level we wish to eliminate. The desired noiseless image u(x), in a Partial Differential Equation based model, can be viewed as the solution of an evolutionary differential equation u t(x) = F(u xx, u x, u, x, t) which means that the true solution will be reached when t ® ¥. In practical applications we should stop the time ''t'' at some moment during this evolutionary process. This work presents a sufficient condition, related to time t and to the standard deviation s of the noise we desire to remove, which gives a constant T such that u(x, T) is a good approximation of u(x). The approach here focused on edge preservation during the noise elimination process as its main characteristic. The balance between edge points and interior points is carried out by a function g which depends on the initial noisy image u(x, t0), the standard deviation of the noise we want to eliminate and a constant k. The k parameter estimation is also presented in this work therefore making, the proposed model automatic. The model's feasibility and the choice of the optimal time scale is evident through out the various experimental results.

This paper deals with the effects of hair coat characteristics on the sweating rate of Brazilian Braford cows and estimation of heritabilities and genetic correlations of these traits. Data (n=1607) on hair length, coat thickness, hair diameter, number of hairs per unit area, coat reflectance and sweating rate were recorded from heifers and cows of a commercial herd managed on range under extensive system. The data were analyzed considering the following effects on the model for hair coat traits: classes of sires and contemporary groups; linear effects of month and genotype; linear and quadratic effects of age. The effect of sire was important (P<0.05) for all hair coat traits, except for number of hairs; contemporary groups affected (P<0.05) all hair coat traits; the effect of sampling month was important (P<0.05) for hair length and reflectance; genotype affected (P<0.05) hair length, diameter and coat reflectance; the quadratic effect of age was important (P<0.05) only for coat reflectance. Two models were used to analyze the sweating rate. The first model considered the following fixed effects: classes of contemporary groups and sires; linear effect of genotype, coat thickness, hair length, hair diameter, number of hairs, coat reflectance; linear and quadratic effects of time of day, age, air temperature, partial vapour pressure and radiant heat load. The second model used for the sweating rate considered the same fixed effects for the first model, except that the hair coat characteristics were adjusted for important effects used in the models to analyze hair coat traits. All meteorological factors and contemporary groups were important (P<0.05) on variation of sweating rate in both models. The Restricted Maximum. Likelihood (REML) method was used to estimate variance and covariance components under the sire model. Results included heritability estimates in narrow (h(2)) and broad (H) sense for single-trait analyzes: hair thickness (h(2)=0.16; H-2=0.26); hair length (h(2)=0.18; H-2=0.39); number of hairs (h(2)=0.08 +/- 0.07; H-2=0.08 +/- 0.07); hair diameter (h(2)=0.12 +/- 0.07; H-2=0.12 +/- 0.07); coat reflectance (h(2)=0.30; H-2=0.42); and sweating rate (h(2)=0.10 +/- 0.07; H-2=0.10 +/- 0.07). In general, the genetic correlations between the adaptive traits were favorable as for the direction to select for adaptation in tropical environment; however, they presented high standard errors. The results of this study imply that hair coat characteristics and sweating ability are important for the adaptability to heat stress and they must be better studied and further considered for selection for genetic progress of adaptation in tropical environment. Infrared-to-visible frequency upconversion through cooperative energy-transfer and thermal effects in Tb3+/Yb3+-codoped tellurite glasses excited at 1.064 mum is investigated. Bright luminescence emission around 485, 550, 590, 625 and 65 nm, identified as due to the D-5(4) --> F-7(J) (J= 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2) transitions of the terbium ions, respectively, was recorded. The excitation of the D-5(4) emitting level of the Tb3+ ions is assigned to cooperative energy-transfer from pairs of ytterbium ions.. The effect of temperature on the upconversion process was examined and the results revealed a fourfold upconversion enhancement in the 300-500 K interval. The enhancement of the upconversion process is due to the temperature dependence of the Yb3+-sensitizer absorption cross-section under anti-Stokes excitation. A rate-equation. model using multiphonon-assisted absorption for the ytterbium excitation combined with the energy migration effect between Yb-Yb pair, and Tb3+ ground-state depopulation via multiphonon excitation of the F-7(J) excited states describes quite well the experimental results. The deactivation of the two lowest excited states of Ho3+ was investigated in Ho3+ singly doped and Ho3+, Pr3+-codoped fluoride (ZBLAN) glasses. We establish that 0.1-0.3 mol % Pr3+ can efficiently deactivate the first excited (I-5(7)) state of Ho3+ while causing a small reduction of similar to 40% of the initial population of the second excited (I-5(6)) state. The net effect introduced by the Pr3+ ion deactivation of the Ho3+ ion is the fast recovery of the ground state of Ho3+. The Burshstein model parameters relevant to the Ho3+-> Pr3+ energy transfer processes were determined using a least squares fit to the measured luminescence decay. The energy transfer upconversion and cross relaxation parameters for 1948, 1151, and 532 nm excitations of singly Ho3+-doped ZBLAN were determined. Using the energy transfer rate parameters we determine from the measured luminescence, a rate equation model for 650 nm excitation of Ho3+-doped and Ho3+, Pr3+-doped ZBLAN glasses was developed. The rate equations were solved numerically and the population inversion between the I-5(6) and the I-5(7) excited states of Ho3+ was calculated to examine the beneficial effects on the gain associated with Pr3+ codoping. The mechanism involved in the Tm3+ (F-3(4))-->Ho3+ (I-5(7)) energy transfer and Tm3+ (H-3(4), H-3(6))-->Tm3+ (F-3(4), F-3(4)) cross relaxation as a function of the donor and acceptor concentrations was investigated in Tm-Ho-codoped fluorozirconate glasses. The experimental transfer rates were determined for the Tm-->Ho energy transfer from the best fit of the acceptor luminescence decay using an expression which takes into account the Inokuti-Hirayama model and localized donor-to-acceptor interaction solution. The original acceptor solution derived from the Inokuti-Hirayama model fits well the acceptor luminescence transient only for low-concentrated systems. The results showed that a fast excitation diffusion that occurs in a very short time (t<reduces the mean distance between an excited donor (D-*) and the acceptor (A). A localized donor-to-acceptor interaction takes place, leading to an exponential decay of donors as an average of the microscopic rate equation solution of each D-*-A pair separated by distance R that contributes in addition to the Inokuti-Hirayama solution. The observation that the experimental transfer rates were always much bigger than the one predicted by the diffusion model, in which the energy transfer process is assisted by excitation migration among donors state, reinforces the existence of a fast excitation diffusion among donor ions before the energy transfer to acceptor already observed in Yb:Er:ZBLAN. The fast excitation diffusion effect was observed to dominate both the Tm-->Tm cross relaxation and Tm-->Ho energy transfer ions from H-3(4) and F-3(4) thulium states, respectively. We have observed ultraviolet upconversion fluorescence from the 4D3/2 and 2P3/2 levels of Nd3+ in fluoroindate glass under infrared pumping. It was found that the excitation of a large population in the 4F3/2 metastable level allows to achieve strong upconversion emissions at 354 and 382 nm. A simple rate equation model reproduces the temporal behavior of the upconverted emission and allows us to estimate the energy transfer rate among three Nd3+ ions participating in the process. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

We report on efficient frequency upconversion in Er3+-doped fluoroindate glass. The process is observed under 1.48 μm laser diode excitation and results in fluorescence generation in the range from ultraviolet to near-infrared radiation. The study was performed for samples containing 1, 2, and 3 ErF3 mol % in the range of temperatures from 24 to 448 K. The upconverted signals were studied as a function of the laser intensity, and their dynamical behavior is described using a rate equation model which allows us to obtain the energy transfer rates between Er3+ ions in pairs and triads.

Multiphonon assisted frequency upconversion was observed in a Nd3+-doped fluoroindate glass pumped at 866 nm. A near-infrared upconverted emission at 750 nm with a peculiar linear dependence with the laser intensity was observed and explained. The intensity of the upconverted emission experienced a 40-fold enhancement when the sample's temperature was varied from 298 to 498 K. A rate equation model that includes light pumping and multiphonon absorption via thermally coupled electronic excited states of Nd3+ was used, describing quite well the experimental results. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

We present recent results on frequency upconversion (UPC) obtained in fluoroindate glasses (FIG) doped with Ho3+, Tm3+ and Nd3+ ions and codoped with Pr3+/Nd3+ and Yb3+/Tb3+ ions. The results for the Ho3+-doped samples show strong evidence of energy transfer (ET) between Ho3+ ions resonantly excited at 640 nm. The origin of the blue-green upconverted fluorescence observed was identified and the dynamics of the signals revealed the pathways involved in the UPC process. In the case of Tm3+-doped FIG, the samples were resonantly excited at 650 nm and the main mechanism that contributes for the red-to-blue upconversion is excited-state absorption (ESA). The FIG samples codoped with Pr3+/Nd3+ were excited at 588 nm in resonance with transitions starting from the ground state of the Nd 3+ and the Pr3+ ions. It was observed that the presence of Nd3+ ions enhanced the Pr3+ emission at 480 nm by two orders of magnitude. Multiphonon (MP)-assisted upconversion is also discussed for Nd3+-doped FIG pumped at 866 nm. Emission at 750 nm with a peculiar linear dependence with the laser intensity was observed and explained. A rate-equation model that includes MP absorption via thermally coupled electronic excited states of Nd3+ was developed and describes well the experimental results. The role played by effective phonon modes is clearly demonstrated. MP-assisted UPC process was also studied in Yb3+/ Tb3+-codoped FIG samples excited at 1064 nm, which is off-resonance with electronic transitions starting from the ground state. It was determined that the mechanism leading to Tb3+ emission in the blue is due to ET from a pair of excited Yb3+ ions followed by ESA in the Tb 3+ ions. © 2002 Académie des sciences/Éditions scientifiques et médicales Elsevier SAS.

Phonon-assisted cooperative energy transfer and frequency upconversion (UC) in Yb3+/Tb3+ codoped fluoroindate glass were investigated. Anti-Stokes quasiresonant excitation of Yb3+ ions was used to study the influence of multiphonon transitions in the UC process. A rate equation model was used to describe the temperature dependence of the UC emission intensities and the theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Accelerated soil erosion is, at present, one of the most widespread environmental problems in the world. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become an essential tool in soil erosion studies and consequently in the development of appropriate soil conservation strategies. The objective of this paper was to assess the degree of soil erosion associated with land cover dynamics through GIS analysis and to validate the modeling with indicators of soil erosion. Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) model, GIS technology and ground-truth dataset (erosion indicators) were employed to elaborate the soil loss maps for four dates at Sorocaba Municipality (SP, Brazil). It was verified that, although the predicted soil loss rate is normally small along the study area, such rate is significantly greater than the soil formation rate. This shows a non-sustainable situation of soil and land cover management. Unplanned urban expansion seems be the main driving force that acts in increasing the erosion risk/occurrence along the study area.

Community ecology seeks to understand and predict the characteristics of communities that can develop under different environmental conditions, but most theory has been built on analytical models that are limited in the diversity of species traits that can be considered simultaneously. We address that limitation with an individual-based model to simulate assembly of fish communities characterized by life history and trophic interactions with multiple physiological tradeoffs as constraints on species performance. Simulation experiments were carried out to evaluate the distribution of 6 life history and 4 feeding traits along gradients of resource productivity and prey accessibility. These experiments revealed that traits differ greatly in importance for species sorting along the gradients. Body growth rate emerged as a key factor distinguishing community types and defining patterns of community stability and coexistence, followed by egg size and maximum body size. Dominance by fast-growing, relatively large, and fecund species occurred more frequently in cases where functional responses were saturated (i.e. high productivity and/or prey accessibility). Such dominance was associated with large biomass fluctuations and priority effects, which prevented richness from increasing with productivity and may have limited selection on secondary traits, such as spawning strategies and relative size at maturation. Our results illustrate that the distribution of species traits and the consequences for community dynamics are intimately linked and strictly dependent on how the benefits and costs of these traits are balanced across different conditions. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Changing the sample's temperature from 200 K to 535 K, we observed 670-fold enhancement of a phonon-assisted upconversion emission at ≈754 nm obtained from a Nd3+-doped tellurite glass excited by 5 ns laser pulses at 805 nm. A rate-equation model, including the relevant energy levels and temperature dependent transition rates, is proposed to describe the process. The results fit well with the data when one considers the nonradiative transitions contributing for the 754 nm luminescence are promoted by an effective phonon mode with energy of 700 cm-1. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.
