In this work, vitreous samples were prepared in the binary system (100 - x)NaPO3-xMO(3) with M = Mo and W and x varying from 10 to 60. The transmittance properties in the UV, visible, and near-infrared were monitored as a function of MO3 concentration. In both cases, an increase in the amount of transition metal results in an intense and broad absorption band in the visible and near-infrared attributed to metal reduction under synthesis conditions. It was shown that this large absorption can be partially or totally removed using specific oxidizing agents or by improving synthesis parameters such as melting temperature or cooling rate of the melt. In addition, structural investigations by Raman and X-ray absorption spectroscopy suggest that reduction only occurs when the metal cation is in octahedral geometry and that the transmittance improvement is not related with any structural changes. These results were explained in terms of thermodynamic equilibrium of redox species in the melt and allowed to obtain for the first time transparent and chemically stable glasses containing high concentrations of MO3 with transition metals in octahedral geometry inside the glass network.

Curcumin possesses wide-ranging anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties and its biological activity can be correlated to its potent antioxidant capacity. Novel maghemite (gamma-Fe3O4) nanoparticles, characterized by a diameter of about 10 nm and possessing peculiar colloidal properties and surface interactions, called Surface Active Maghemite Nanoparticles (SAMN), were superficially modified with curcumin by simple incubation, due to the presence of under-coordinated Fe(III) atoms on nanoparticle surface. The resulting curcumin-modified SAMNs (SAMN@curcumin) were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), FTIR, Mossbauer, EPR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The redox properties of bound curcumin were tested by electrochemistry. Finally, SAMN@curcumin was studied in the presence of different electroactive substances, namely hydroquinone, NADH and ferrocyanide, in order to assess its electrochemical behavior. Moreover, SAMN@curcumin was electrochemically tested in the presence of one of the most diffuse reactive oxygen specie, such as hydrogen peroxide, demonstrating its stability. SAMN@curcumin in which curcumin is firmly bound, but still retaining its redox features represents a feasible adduct: a magnetically drivable nano-bio-conjugate mimicking free Curcumin redox behavior. The proposed nanostructured material could be exploited as magnetic drivable curcumin vehicle for biomedical applications.

The electrochemical redox behavior of usnic acid, mainly known for its antibiotic activity, has been investigated using cyclic, differential pulse and square wave voltammetry in aqueous electrolyte. These studies were carried out by solid state voltammetry with the solid mechanically attached on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode and at different pH values. Usnic acid did not present any reduction reaction. The pH-dependent electrochemical oxidation occurs in three steps, one electron and one proton irreversible processes, assigned to each of the hydroxyl groups in the molecule. Adsorption of the non-electroactive oxidation product was also observed, blocking the electrode surface. An oxidation mechanism was proposed and electroanalytical methodology was developed to determine usnic acid.

Curcumin possesses wide-ranging anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties and its biological activity can be linked to its potent antioxidant capacity. Superparamagnetic maghemite (gamma-Fe2O3), called surface-active maghemite nanoparticles (SAMNs) were surface-modified with curcumin molecules, due to the presence of under-coordinated Fe-III atoms on the nanoparticle surface. The so-obtained curcumin-modified SAMNs (SAMN@curcumin) had a mean size of 13 +/- 4 nm. SAMN@curcumin was characterized by transmission and scanning electron microscopy, UV/Vis, FTIR, and Mossbauer spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, bulk susceptibility (SQUID), and relaxometry measurements (MRI imaging). The high negative contrast proclivity of SAMN@curcumin to act as potential contrast agent in MRI screenings was also tested. Moreover, the redox properties of bound curcumin were probed by electrochemistry. SAMN@curcumin was studied in the presence of different electroactive molecules, namely hydroquinone, NADH and ferrocyanide, to assess its redox behavior. Finally, SAMN@curcumin was electrochemically probed in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, demonstrating the stability and reactivity of bound curcumin.

Kinetics and mechanism of the induced redox reaction of [Ni(cyclam)](2+) promoted by SO5 center dot-
Resumo:
Oxidation of [Ni(cyclam)](2+), cyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane, accelerated by sulfur dioxide, was studied spectrophotometrically by following the formation of [Ni(cyclam)](3+) under the conditions: [Ni(cyclam)](2+) = 6.0 x 10(-3) M; initial [Ni(cyclam)](3+) = 8.0 x 10(-6) M; [cyclam] = 6.0 x 10(-3) M; [SO2] = (1.0-5.0) x 10(-4) M and 1.0 M perchloric acid in oxygen saturated solutions at 25.0 degrees C and ionic strength = 1.0 M. The oxidation reaction exhibits autocatalytic behavior in which the induction period depends on the initial Ni(III) concentration. A kinetic study of the reduction of Ni(III) by SO2 under anaerobic conditions, and the oxidation of Ni(II), showed that the rate-determining step involves reduction of Ni(III) by SO2 to produce the SO3.- radical, which rapidly reacts with dissolved oxygen to produce SO5.- and rapidly oxidizes Ni(II). The results clearly show a redox cycling process which depends on the balance of SO2 and oxygen concentrations in solution.

A novel supermolecule constituted by four mu(3)-oxo-triruthenium acetate clusters coordinated to manganese(III)-meso -tetra(4-pyridil)porphyrin acetate ([MnTPyP]CH3COO) has been synthesized. Characterization has been performed by UV-Vis and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The electrochemical behavior (cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry) in N,N'-dimethylformamide has been analyzed in terms of five redox processes: three related to peripheral clusters (Ru-IV,Ru-III,Ru-III/Ru-III,Ru-III,Ru-III/Ru-III,Ru-II,Ru-II) and two centered on the Mn-porphyrin core ((MnP)-P-III/(MnP)-P-II/(MnP2-)-P-II). A direct comparison has been performed between MnTCP and MnTPyP as catalysts for the cyclooctene and cyclohexane oxidation reactions. The improved selectivity exhibited by the supramolecular catalyst for cyclohexane oxidation has been ascribed to electronic effects on the oxomanganese(V) porphyrin species induced by the four peripheral clusters, in the formal (RuRuRuIII)-Ru-IV-Ru-III oxidation state. In this work, the electrochemical behavior of Cu-16(wt.%)Zn-6.5(wt.%)Al alloy containing the β'-phase (martensite) was studied in borate buffer solution (pH 8.4) by means of open-circuit potential (EOC), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The alloy EOC was -0.29 V vs. Hg/HgO/OH-, similar to that of pure copper in this medium, indicating that the processes which occur on the alloy surface are mainly governed by copper. EIS response was related to the dielectric and transmission properties of the complex oxide layer. The CVs showed peaks concerning the redox reactions for copper and zinc. These peaks were assigned to the formation and reduction of copper and zinc species. Furthermore, they showed that the copper oxidation was suppressed by the presence of zinc and aluminum in the alloy composition. The copper and zinc oxidation to form complex oxide layers and the reduction of the different metallic oxides generated in the anodic potential scan suggest that a solid state reaction could determine the metallic oxide formation. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
