The tin dioxide is an n-type semiconductor, which exhibits varistor behavior with high capacity of absorption of energy, whose function is to restrict transitory over-voltages without being destroyed, when it is doped with some oxides. Varistors are used in alternated current fields as well as in continuous current, and it can be applied in great interval of voltages or in great interval of currents. The electric properties of the varistor depend on the defects that happen at the grain boundaries and the adsorption of oxygen. The (98.90-x)%SnO2.0.25%CoO+0.75%MnO2+0.05%Ta2O5+0.05%Tr2O3 systems, in which Tr=La or Nd. Current-voltage measurements were accomplished for determination of the non-linear coefficient were studied. SEM microstructure analysis was made to evaluate the microstructural characteristics of the systems. The results showed that the rare-earth oxides have influenced the electrical behavior presented by the system. (C) 2002 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

The theory of vibronic transitions in rare earth compounds is re-examined in the light of a more reliable representation for the ligand field Hamiltonian than the crude electrostatic model. General expressions that take into account the relevant contributions from the forced electric dipole and dynamic coupling mechanisms are derived for the vibronic intensity parameters. These include additional terms, from charge and polarizability gradients, which have not been considered in previous work. Emphasis is given to the relative signs of these various contributions. Under certain approximations these expressions may be conveniently written in terms of accessible ligand field parameters. A comparison with experimental values for the compounds Cs2NaEuCl6 and LiEuF4 is made and satisfactory agreement between theory and experiment is found. A discussion is given on the sensitivity of the calculated intensities to the values of radial integrals, interconfigurational energy differences and ligand field parameters that may be used. Finally, the problem in which a vibronic and an electronic level are in resonance, or near resonance, is analyzed. Suitable expressions to describe the effects of the even-rank components of the vibronic Hamiltonian are obtained. It is found that, depending on the strength of the vibronic interaction and the resonance conditions, the admixture between these two levels may lead to intensities of nearly equal values. © 1995.

Nanoparticles of tin oxide, doped with Ce and Y, were prepared using the polymeric precursor method. The structural variations of the tin oxide nanoparticles were characterized by means of nitrogen physisorption, carbon dioxide chemisorption, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The synthesized samples, undoped and doped with the rare earths, were used to promote the ethanol steam reforming reaction. The SnO2-based nanoparticles were shown to be active catalysts for the ethanol steam reforming. The surface properties, such as surface area, basicity/base strength distribution, and catalytic activity/selectivity, were influenced by the rare earth doping of SnO2 and also by the annealing temperatures. Doping led to chemical and micro-structural variations at the surface of the SnO2 particles. Changes in the catalytic properties of the samples, such as selectivity toward ethylene, may be ascribed to different dopings and annealing temperatures.

We present a simple model for the doped compound Nd2-yCevCuO4, in order to explain some recent experimental results on the latter. Within a Hartree-Fock context, we start from an impurity Anderson-like model and consider the magnetic splitting of the Nd-4f ground state Kramers doublet due to exchange interactions with the ordered Cu moments. Our results are in very good agreement with the experimental data, yielding a Schottky anomaly peak for the specific heat that reduces its amplitude, broadens and shifts to lower temperatures, upon Ce doping. For overdoped compounds at low temperatures, the specific heat behaves linearly and the magnetic susceptibility is constant. A smooth transition from this Fermi liquid-like behavior occurs as temperature is increased and, at high temperatures, the susceptibility exhibits a Curie-like behavior. Finally, we discuss some improvements our model is amenable to incorporate, (C) 1998 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work we report on visible upconversion emission in Er 3+-, and Ho3+-doped PbGeO3-PbF 2-CdF2-based transparent glass ceramics under 980 nm infrared excitation. In erbium-doped vitroceramic samples, blue(410 ran), green(530, and 550 nm) and red(660 nm) emission signals were generated, which were identified as due to the 2H9/2, 2H 11/2, 4S3/2, and 4F9/2 transitions to the 4I15/2 ground-state, respectively. Intense red(650 nm) upconversion emission corresponding to the 5F5 - 5I8 transition and very small blue(490 nm) and green(540 nm) signals assigned to the 5F 2,3 - 5I8 and 4S2, 5F4 - 5I8 transitions, respectively, were observed in the holmium-doped samples. The 540 nm is the dominant upconversion signal in Ho3+-doped vitroceramics under 850 nm excitation. The dependence of the upconversion processes upon pump power and doping concentration are also investigated, and the main routes for the upconversion excitation processes are also identified. The comparison of the upconversion process in transparent glass ceramics and the precursor glass was also examined and the results revealed that the former present higher upconversion efficiencies.

The crystallization of fluoroindate glasses doped with Gd3+, Mn2+ and Cu2+ heat treated at different temperatures, ranging from the glass transition temperature (Tg) to the crystallization temperature (Tc), are investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and 19F nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The EPR spectra indicate that the Cu2+ ions in the glass are located in axially distorted octahedral sites. In the crystallized glass, the g-values agreed with those reported for Ba2ZnF6, which correspond to Cu2+ in a tetragonal compressed F- octahedron and to Cu2+ on interstitial sites with a square-planar F- co-ordination. The EPR spectra of the Mn2+ doped glasses exhibit a sextet structure due to the Mn2+ hyperfine interaction. These spectra suggest a highly ordered environment for the Mn2+ ions (close to octahedral symmetry) in the glass. The EPR spectra of the recrystallized sample exhibit resonances at the same position, suggesting that the Mn2+ ions are located in sites of highly symmetric crystalline field. The increase of the line intensity of the sextet and the decrease of the background line in the thermal treated samples suggest that the Mn2+ ions move to the highly ordered sites which contribute to the sextet structure. The EPR spectra of the Gd3+ doped glasses exhibit the typical U-spectrum of a s-state ion in a low symmetry site in disordered systems. The EPR of the crystallized glasses, in contrast, have shown a strong resonance in g ≈ 2.0, suggesting Gd3+ ions in environment close to cubic symmetry. The 19F NMR spin-lattice relaxation rates were also strongly influenced by the crystallization process that takes over in samples annealed above Tc. For the glass samples (doped or undoped) the 19F magnetization recoveries were found to be adjusted by an exponential function and the spin-lattice relaxation was characterized by a single relaxation time. In contrast, for the samples treated above Tc, the 19F magnetization-recovery becomes non-exponential. A remarkable feature of our results is that the changes in the Cu2+, Mn2+, Gd3+ EPR spectra and NMR relaxation, are always observed for the samples annealed above Tc. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. This work evaluated kinetic and adsorption physicochemical models for the biosorption process of lanthanum, neodymium, europium, and gadolinium by Sargassum sp. in batch systems. The results showed: (a) the pseudo-second order kinetic model was the best approximation for the experimental data with the metal adsorption initial velocity parameter in 0.042-0.055 mmol.g -1.min-1 (La < Nd < Gd < Eu); (b) the Langmuir adsorption model presented adequate correlation with maximum metal uptake at 0.60-0.70 mmol g-1 (Eu < La < Gd < Nd) and the metal-biomass affinity parameter showed distinct values (Gd < Nd < Eu < La: 183.1, 192.5, 678.3, and 837.3 L g-1, respectively); and (c) preliminarily, the kinetics and adsorption evaluation did not reveal a well-defined metal selectivity behavior for the RE biosorption in Sargassum sp., but they indicate a possible partition among RE studied. © (2009) Trans Tech Publications.

Rare earth complexes (RE) can be incorporated in silica matrixes, originating organic/inorganic hybrid materials with good thermal stability and high rare earth emission lines. In this work, the hybrid material was obtained by the polymeric precursor method and ultrasonic dispersed with spherical silica particles prepared by the Stöber Method. The Raman spectra indicated that the Eu3+ ions are involved in a polymeric structure formed as consequence of the chelation and polyesterification reactions of this ion with citric acid and ethylene glycol. After the ultrasonic stirring, 2-hydroxynicotinic ligand will also compose this polymeric rigid structure. The TGA/DTA analysis showed that this polymeric material was thermal decomposed at 300 °C. Moreover, this process allows the chelating process of the 2-hydroxynicotinic acid ligand to the Eu3+ ions. The 29Si NMR showed that the ultrasonic dispersion of the reactants was not able to promote the functionalization of the silica particles with the 2-hydroxynicotinic acid ligand. Moreover, heat treatment promotes the [Eu(HnicO2)3] complex particles incorporation into silica pores. At this temperature, the TGA curve showed that only the thermal degradation of ethylene glycol and citric acid used during the experimental procedure occurs. The silica and hybrid materials are composed by spherical and aggregated particles with particle size of approximately 450 nm, which can be influenced by the heat treatment. These materials also present an absorption band located at 337 nm. The photoluminescent study showed that when the hybrid samples were excited at 337 nm wavelength, the ligand absorbs the excitation light. Part of this energy is transferred to the Eu3+ ion, which main emission, 5D0→ 7F2, is observed in the emission spectrum at 612 nm. As the heating temperature increases to 300 C, the energy transfer is more favorable. The lifetime values showed that the Eu3+ emission is enhanced due to the energy transfer process in the powders. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The relentless pursuit for materials containing rare earth ions with photoluminescent properties has led to several studies with applications in the development of new technologies. The main focus of this work is the preparation of Er3+-doped polycrystalline Y2O3 with photoluminescent properties using PEG as an organic precursor and heat-treated at different temperatures. The methodology used in this synthesis is highly attractive due to its high feasibility for improved technology and low cost for preparing materials. The behavior of the viscous resin has been evaluated and the final compounds exhibited the formation of a cubic polycrystalline phase, which is able to support variations in Er3+ doping concentrations up to 10 mol%, without significant changes in the polycrystalline parameters. The values of the nanocrystallite size calculated by Scherrer's equation showed direct dependence on the heat-treatment temperature as well as the Er3+ concentration. Intense emission in the visible region under excitation at 980 nm was attributed to an upconversion phenomenon assigned to the intraconfigurational f-f transitions of Er3+ ions. The upconversion mechanism was investigated and it was demonstrated that the higher intense emission in the red region in comparison to the emission in the green region is related to the crystallite size. The studies about the intensity showed the dependence of upconversion emission of power source, indicating that two-photon are responsible for the green and red photoluminescence. These polycrystalline materials exhibit properties that make them promising for use in solar energy systems, C-telecom band or solid-state laser devices. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Lithium intercalation into double rare earth chromates was carried out. It was found that the compounds NaxLi1-xLa(CrO4)2 belong to the NaLa(CrO4)2 structural type and may be recommended as fast ionic conductors. At small values of x a third polymorphous modification of LiLa(CrO4)2 can be stabilized. Attempts to intercalate lithium into CsLa(CrO4)2 lead to collapse of the lamellar network with the formation of LaCrO4 and alkaline chromates. Ion exchange Li+/H+ data are consistent with these considerations. © 1994.

Gadolinium oxysulfide powders doped with different Tb3+ concentrations were prepared from sulfur vaporization on rare earths' basic carbonate precursors. Single-phase Gd2O2S samples were obtained, with Tb3+ doping up to 9 at%. The study of the excitation mechanisms revealed that the Tb3+ emission might occur after the direct Tb3+ excitation either by energy transfer from Gd3+ or from the phosphor host. The characteristic terbium emission lines were observed, resulting from the radiative decay from D-5(3) or D-5(4), to F-7(j) levels. The cross-relaxation phenomenon was observed and its effects on the materials emission color were discussed based on the CIE diagram. By using time-resolved spectroscopy, D-5(3) -> F-7(J) and D-5(4) -> F-7(J) transitions were separated. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
