The aim of the research that originated this article was the analysis of the social trajectory of students from a public preparatory course and the verification of their expectations about higher education. Data collection was based on a questionnaire with open and closed-ended questions and a semi-structured interview, based on the models used by Muzzetti (1997). Data were analyzed by the elaboration of thematic charts. Based on the researches conducted by Pierre Bourdieu (1997, 2007), this research concluded that the students understand that schooling is, besides being a viable alternative in the search for social ascension, the redeeming of social ills. Profession choice based on natural talent or divine gift generate expectations which attest the lack of knowledge about the school system by students and their parents, which is reinforced by the belief in opportunity equality.

The role of superoxide in adriamycin-induced nephropathy (single dose; i.v. 3 mg/kg) has been studied by blocking superoxide synthesis through the administration of allopurinol (500 mg/L in drinking water). In Experiment I (EI), allopurinol administration was started 3 days prior to nephropathy induction and continued until day 14. In Experiment II (EII) allopurinol administration was started 2 weeks after nephropathy induction and was maintained until the end of the experiment (26 weeks). Affected glomeruli frequency and tubulointerstitial lesion index (TILI) were determined at Weeks 2 and 4 (EI) and Week 26 (EII). In EI, and 24 h mean proteinuria in the nephrotic control group (NCG-I) differed from that of the treated nephrotic group (TNG-I) at Week 1 (TNG = 33.3 ± 6.39 mg/24 h; NCG = 59.8 ± 6.3 mg/24 h; p < 0.05) and 2 (NCG-I = 80.0 ± 17.5 mg/24h; TNG-I = 49.1 ± 8.4 mg/24 h; p < 0.05). No glomerular alterations were observed and TILI medians were not different in both nephrotic groups at week 2 (NCG-I = 1+: TNG = 1+) and 4 (NCG = 4+; TNG = 4+). In EII, NCG-II and TNG-II presented different 24 h proteinuria values only at Week 6, (136.91 ± 22.23 mg/24 h ad 72.66 ± 10.72 mg/24 h, respectively; p < 0.05). Between nephrotic groups, there was no statistical difference in the median of affected glomeruli (CNG-II = 56%; TNG-II = 48% and TILI (NCG-II = 8+; TNG-II = 9+). Thus, allopurinol was associated with a transient reduction in proteinuria and it did not alter the progression of the nephropathy.

Leukotrienes are classic inflammatory response mediators considered chemotactic agents and microbicidal activity regulators in cells of the innate immune system, playing a protective role against different infectious agents. In this study, we investigated the involvement of leukotrienes in the course of murine paracoccidioidomycosis based on the following immunologic parameters: cell influx, mieloperoxydase activity, NO production, cytokine production, and fungal recovery in lungs of mice selected according to the intensity of their low (AIRmin) and high (AIRmax) acute inflammatory response. Infection by P. brasiliensis induced considerable production of IL-6, IL-10, IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha cytokines, and led to cell recruitment, as well as NO production in lungs at different study periods. In animals treated with MK886, a leukotriene biosynthesis inhibitor, IFN-gamma, IL-6 and TNF-alpha production was lower, while neutrophil influx and NO production decreased. These results may explain the higher fungal load in lungs of animals in which leukotriene synthesis was inhibited, suggesting that leukotrienes have a possible protective role in experimental paracoccidioidomycosis. AIRmax animals had lower fungal load in comparison with AIRmin ones, which can be related to the AIR phenotype regarding neutrophil migration, besides lower production of NO and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Thus, mice presenting AIRmax background are more resistant to infection by P. brasiliensis.

The effects of cyclosporine A (CSA) administration, started as early as renal lesion is induced, on the development of Adriamycin-induced nephropathy were assessed by comparing the time course of this nephropathy in rats receiving CSA with that in non-treated animals (group ADR) over 16 weeks. Throughout the experiment, no significant difference in proteinuria was observed between the groups. At the end of the experiment, there was no significant difference between the groups regarding the frequency of glomerular lesion (Group AADR: Md=23%, P25=15%, P75=75%; Group ADR-CSA: Md=48%, P25=11%, P75=70%); tubulointerstitial lesion index (Group ADR: Md=1.5, P25=1.0, P75=2.5); glomerulosclerosis area (Group ADR = 18.2 +/- 4.2%; Group ADR-CSA = 13.2 +/- 1.4%); and, interstitial fibrosis area (Group ADR+V: 1.75 +/- 0.10%; group ADR-CSA: 1.34 +/- 0.09%). In conclusion, CSA, when, administered since nephropathy induction does not change the course of the disease.

An investigation was carried out to verify whether the heat stress hyperthermia response of broilers is prostaglandin-dependent. Male broiler chickens of the Hubbard-Petterson strain, aged 35-49 days, were used. Chickens were injected with indomethacin (1 mg/kg intraperitoneally) 15 min before or 2 h after heat exposure (at 35 degrees C for 4 h), and rectal temperature was measured before injection and up to 4 h thereafter. Birds were separated into two groups with and without access to water during heat stress. The increase in rectal temperature was lower (P<0.05) in birds with access to drinking water during heat exposure. All birds injected with indomethacin exhibited an increase in rectal temperature, irrespective of whether indomethacin was administered before or in the course of the rise in temperature. The results revealed that the increase in rectal temperature during heat exposure is not prostaglandin-dependent, and that the use of cyclooxigenase inhibitors is not recommended to attenuate heat stress hyperthermia in broiler chickens.

The effect of dialysable leukocyte extracts (DLE) obtained from hamsters immunized with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis (immune DLE) and from non-immunized hamsters (non-immune DLE) was studied in hamsters inoculated with P. brasiliensis by the intratesticular route. Treatment with immune or non-immune DLE was started during the third week of infection and was repeated at 7, 11, 15 and 19 weeks. A group of untreated infected animals was used as control. Animals were submitted to the delayed hypersensitivity skin test to P. brasiliensis antigen (PbAg) in vivo and assayed in vitro by the macrophage migration inhibition test in the presence of Phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and PbAg and by immunodiffusion for specific antibody. The animals were sacrificed at 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 weeks. The morphology and extension of the lesions were studied at the inoculation site, and in lymph nodes, lungs, liver, spleen and kidneys. In contrast to the controls, animals treated with both DLEs maintained a positive cell-mediated immune response throughout the experiment and developed less extensive infection with a significantly lower number of fungi in the lesions. The results suggest that immune and non-immune DLE preparations modified the evolution of experimental paracoccidioidomycosis with equal efficiency. This similarity may be explained by the immunoregulatory activities of both extracts.

The effect of macrophage blockade on the natural resistance and on the adaptative immune response of susceptible (B10.D2/oSn) and resistant (A/Sn) mice to Paracoccidioides brasiliensis infection was investigated. B10.D2/oSn and A/Sn mice previously injected with colloidal carbon were infected ip with yeast cells to determine the 50% lethal dose, and to evaluate the anatomy and histopathology, macrophage activation, antibody production and DTH reactions. Macrophage blockade rendered both resistant and susceptible mice considerably more susceptible to infection, as evidenced by increased mortality and many disseminated lesions. P. brasiliensis infection and/or carbon treatment increased the ability of macrophages from resistant mice to spread up to 25 days after treatment. In susceptible mice the enhanced spreading capacity induced by carbon treatment was impaired at ail assayed periods except at 1 week after infection. Macrophage blockade enhanced DTH reactions in resistant mice, but did not alter these reactions in susceptible mice, which remained anergic. To the contrary, macrophage blockade enhanced specific antibody production by susceptible mice, but did nor affect the low levels produced by resistant mice. The effect of macrophage blockade confirms the natural tendency of resistant animals to mount DTH reactions in the course of the disease and the preferential antibody response developed by susceptible mice after P. brasiliensis infection. on the whole, macrophage functions appear to play a fundamental role in the natural and acquired resistance mechanisms to P. brasiliensis infection.

The effect of Ketoconazole (KTZ) on the hamster experimental intratesticular paracoccidioidomycosis was studied employing different treatment schedules. KTZ long course treatment beginning at an early stage of the infection was effective in preventing fungal proliferation, dissemination to lymph nodes, spleen and kidneys, and in maintaining low levels of humoral and cellular specific immune responses. KTZ short course treatment starting at an advanced stage of disease resulted in a more severe histopathological picture without significant changes in the immunological profile. The drug prolonged the life span of hamsters infected with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, but did not prevent mortality. Toxic necrosis of the bone marrow occurred in normal animals receiving 120 mg/kg/day of KTZ but with lower doses no morphologic alterations were observed in heart, lungs, kidneys, adrenals, spleen, liver, intestine or bone marrow. © 1984 Dr W. Ethanol (ETOH) consumption has been associated with endocrine and autonomic changes, including the development of hypertension. However, the sequence of pathophysiological events underlying the emergence of this effect is poorly understood. Aims: This study aimed to establish a time-course correlation between neuroendocrine and cardiovascular changes contributing to the development of hypertension following ETOH consumption. Methods: Male adult Wistar rats were subjected to the intake of increasing ETOH concentrations in their drinking water (first week: 5%, second week: 10%, third and fourth weeks: 20% v/v). Results: ETOH consumption decreased plasma and urinary volumes, as well as body weight and fluid intake. Furthermore, plasma osmolality, plasma sodium and urinary osmolality were elevated in the ETOH-treated rats. ETOH intake also induced a progressive increase in the mean arterial pressure (MAP), without affecting heart rate. Initially, this increasein MAP was correlated with increased plasma concentrations of adrenaline and noradrenaline. After the second week of ETOH treatment, plasma catecholamines returned to basal levels, and incremental increases were observed in plasma concentrations of vasopressin (AVP) and angiotensin II (ANG II). Conversely, plasma oxytocin, atrial natriuretic peptide, prolactin and the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis components were not significantly altered by ETOH. Conclusions: Taken together, these results suggest that increased sympathetic activity may contribute to the early increase in MAP observed inETOHtreated rats. However, the maintenance of this effect may be predominantly regulated by the long-term increase in the secretion of other circulating factors, such as AVP and ANG II, the secretion of both hormones being stimulated by the ETOH-induced dehydration. © The Author 2013.
