Radipherpus protheses are a means of treatment for malignant tumor-carrying patients. These protheses are used in cases of brachytherapy or external actinotherapy by contact and allow treating them with high radiation doses that are quickly released from the areas next to tumor, so that the radiations be restricted to the affected region, without the emissions damaging or destroying the soft tissues. Based on these considerations, the present paper was aimed at making literature review on the use of radipherous protheses for the treatment of head and neck neoplasias. © 2006 1995, Editorial Ciencias médicas.

The study of techniques to reach aesthetics in the anterior region when using osseointegrated implants is of great importance. A literature review was made to compare effivciency and suitability of immediate provisionalization in re-opening of osseointegrated implants with respect to the set time (use of standardized cicatrizants and emergency profile cicatrizants). Immediate provisional denture in the phase of re-opening makes the restoration of the gingival contourn quicker when compared to the use of cicatrizants without intermediate phases required. © 2008 1995, Editorial Ciencias médicas.

The purpose of present study was to analyze the effect of pigmentation and chemical disinfection on the initial and the permanent deformation of two silicones (Silved Selant and Brascoved) for facial prosthesis. Initial and permanent deformation tests samples (20 mm × 12.5 mm) were made following the manufacturer's instructions. For each silicone (n= 40), ten samples were used for pigmentation with make up power, ten with iron oxide, ten with ceramics power and tem were tested without pigmentation. Five samples of each group were submitted to chemical disinfection using a 2 % Chlorhexidine spray. All samples were immersed in physiological saline and stored in an oven at 35 ° ± 1 °C. After 90 days, the samples were submitted to initial and permanent deformation tests using a dial indicator. For both properties, data were analyzed by Tukey's test (a= 0.05). The results showed that all the materials had initial and permanent deformation regardless of pigmentation and chemical disinfection. The groups were used for pigmentation with iron oxide showed less initial and permanent deformation when were submitted to the chemical disinfection regardless the silicone used.

Nowadays, aesthetics is very appreciated in the social context and a attractive smile is the object of desire in most of patients requiring prosthesis treatment. In case of removable prosthesis, total or partial, this feature is more significant since some or all teeth may be absents. Implants leading to a significant improvement in relation to function and comfort of removable prosthesis users, but the aesthetics of these prostheses had little attention in the current scientific literature. Thus, the aim of present article was to make a review of the literature on the aesthetic features related to rehabilitation with removable prostheses. In present study we found as significant factors for the aesthetics in removable partial and total prostheses: Selection of artificial teeth and their arrangement, characterization of acrylic resin basis and also the types and location of retainers for the removable partial prostheses. We conclude that the involvement and the aesthetic knowledge during the appropriate planning of this process is responsibility of the professional.

The continuing advances in technology, dental materials and equipment have contributed significantly to improve the level of esthetic dentistry today. Among these innovations, development of pure ceramic restorations has evolved to give different alternatives. Dental ceramics have presented a rapidly technological changing to improve mechanical and optical properties. Currently there are several systems of metal free ceramics with excellent mechanical and optical properties, for making crowns and plurals. These modern systems are presented with various compositions and different preparation techniques, making these more versatile. Within this perspective, the dental market offers a huge range of new indirect and metal-free materials for prostheses, providing new options, plus also new questions to decide among the available alternatives. The aim of this review is take a view of the different ceramic systems in terms of its composition and different techniques of production.

The dissatisfaction of the treatment with mandibular complete dentures in edentulous patients has been a constant problem in Dentistry. Often, the absence of stability and retention, resultants of a physiologic condition and alveolar ridge resorption, bring reduction of chewing force, speech problems and social life interference. In these cases, the rehabilitation over osseointegrated implants can be an effective and safe alternative of treatment. When it is not possible to put implants in appropriate number and disposition, it is necessary to make a simple and low costing prosthetic planning, which makes resurge the overdentures. Various implant supported attachment systems for overdentures have been developed in the dental market. Thus, intending to facilitate the professional choice, this study review the literature about attachment systems O’ring and bar- clip in its following aspect: retention level, stress distribution, hygiene complications and patient satisfaction.

The study consists on a qualitative analysis of content ministered by Bioethical discipline on Brazilian Dental Schools. Data collect occurred by semi-structured questioners send by e-mail and correspondence. It was used content analysis by categorical analysis technique, according to Bardin. Among 182 Schools, just 57 (31.3%) shows Bioethical Discipline. It was observed that the discipline is ministered on the first or last year of course generally. Principal subjects broached are bioethical dilemma (76.3%) with polemics questions and others actual like abortion, clone, organs transplant, attendance of patient porter of HIV and bioethical historic (65.8%), bioethical fundaments, principles and models (57.9%). 84.4% researched professors, said that bioethical discipline awake interesting on students because it actual and it's face to patient-professional relation too. It was possible to conclude that bioethical discipline treat in its content some actual and polemic themes that influence dental surgeon formation because promote him conscience and responsibility of him role front attention at oral health, and so, this discipline should be implanted, specifically in the first year of all Dentistry graduation courses.

The aim of this study was to analyze the anatomotopographic location of the mandibular foramen in the right and left ramus, and to verify the influence of the amount of dental alveoli on the foramen position. Thirty-five adult dry human mandibles of Araraquara Dental School, UNESP - São Paulo State University were assessed, with or without dental alveoli. Measurements were obtained, using a ruler and a digital caliper. The following distances were measured: Fl - distance between the lowest point of the mandibular incisure and the mandibular foramen (F point); FB - distance between the mandibular base and F point; FP - distance between the posterior margin of the ramus and F point; FA - distance between the anterior margin of the ramus and F point; FT - distance between the apex of the retromolar trigone and F point. The Mann-Whitney test was used to compare each measurement according to hemi-arch, and the Kruskal-Wallis test was used to analyze the influence of the presence of alveoli on the measures. For multiple comparison, Dunn's method was used. There was no statistically significant difference in the location of the mandibular foramen when compared to the right and left hemi-arches. The amount of dental alveoli influenced, significantly, only on FA and FP distances. Thus, it was concluded that the right and left mandibular ramus showed symmetry in the location of the mandibular foramen, and the amount of alveoli influenced on the distances of the anterior and posterior margins of the mandibular rams, in relation to the mandibular foramen.

To evaluate changes in microhardness, roughness and surface morphology of dental enamel and composite resin after different tooth bleaching techniques. Material and Methods: Dental fragments from bovine incisors with composite resin restorations were submitted to different bleaching protocols: G1 – daily 8 hours application of a 10% carbamide peroxide (CP) gel during 21 days; G2: 3 applications of 15 minutes of a 38% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) gel; G3: 38% H2O2 gel associated to irradiation with LED (470nm) during 6 minutes. The Knoop micro hardness of enamel and composite resin were evaluated at 1, 7, 14 and 21 days for G1, and after 1, 2 and 3 sessions for G2 and G3. The roughness and superficial morphology (atomic force microscopy) were evaluated before and at the end of the bleaching treatment. The data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon tests (=5%). Results: Significant reduction on enamel hardness was observed after 2 and 3 sessions for G2 and G3. For composite, the reduction occurred after 21 days for G1, and after 3 sessions for G2 and G3 (p<0.05). Significant reduction on roughness and superficial morphology were observed only for enamel of G1 group (p<0.05). Conclusion: The 10% CP gel promoted only superficial alterations on dental enamel, while the 38% H2O2 gel promoted mineral reduction of this dental tissue. All the bleaching protocols promoted reduction on hardness of composite resin.

The oral rehabilitation with osseointegrated implants is a well-documented treatment with high rate of success. Nevertheless, demands related to treatment time and surgical technique began to appear. In this context, the procedure of immediate loading in which the dental prosthesis is placed right after implant surgery has become a constant practice. Although immediate loading has been an important advance, minimally invasive procedures, such as implant placement without raising a mucoperiosteal flap (flapless) are increasingly being performed. Association of immediate loading with the flapless technique improves acceptance by patients and professionals, because no suturing is required. Moreover, it reduces swelling, bleeding during and after surgery, postoperative pain, surgery time, discomfort and hematoma, as well as the need for postoperative medication. These characteristics ease the stages of rehabilitation soon after implant placement, cooperating with prosthodontist's work. Thus, the proposal of this study is to present a clinical case of oral rehabilitation with osseointegrated implants and fixed prosthesis in both arches, in which the flapless technique was applied, followed by immediate loading. It will discuss the diagnosis, prosthetic planning, surgical/prosthodontic procedures and follow-up for 20 months.

The demand for cosmetic dentistry, including teeth whitening, has increased in recent years. The home teeth whitening and in-office, are widely used in dental practice. The mechanism by which it works is by oxidation of the chromogenic existing tooth structure. This is an effective and minimally invasive procedure that achieves tooth lighten the color, however, may cause alterations in the enamel surface, such as a dental permeability increase. Another effect caused by this procedure is tooth sensitivity, being the most common side effect, up to 65% of individuals have had a secondary effect at least once during treatment. This sensitivity and gingival irritation caused by bleaching may vary depending on the patient and used bleaching product

As an alternative to improve the adaptation of prefabricated posts in flared canals and weakened roots, the option is for relining prefabricated pin, known as a technique of anatomical post. This technique, which can be made with composite resin increases the adjustment post to the walls of the canal and reduces the cementing line, causing the retaining post is less dependent on the mechanical properties of the cementing agent. This article aims to provide an overview of anatomical posts, specifically in the last two decades, based on studies extracted from Scielo, Scopus and Pubmed, referring to the following terms of MeSH Data Base: custom made fiber post, indirect fiber glass posts, root canal therapy and post and core tecnique. According to the literature review in this article, it can be concluded that this technique has been used by several authors and has been shown effective and promising, it creates an individualized retainer with better adaptation and decreased mechanical imbrication cementing line .
