Flexible and free-standing films of piezoelectric composites made up of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramic powder dispersed in a castor oil-based polyurethane (PU) matrix were obtained by spin coating and characterised as materials for sensor applications. The piezoelectric coefficients d(31) and d(33) were measured with the usual technique. The piezoelectric charge constant d(33) yields values up to less than or equal to 24 pC/N, even at lower PZT content (33 vol%). Some desirable properties like piezoelectricity, flexibility and good mechanical resistance show this new material to be a good alternative for use as sensors and actuators.

Gaussian basis sets (24s14p, 30s19p14d, and 33s21p14d for O (P-3), Ti (S-5), and Ba (S-1) atoms, respectively), are designed with the strategy of the Generator Coordinate Hartree-Fock method. The basis sets are then contracted to [6s4p], [10s5p4d], and [16s9p5d] to O, Ti, and Ba atoms, respectively, and used in calculations of total and orbital energies of (TiO+2)-Ti-1 and (BaO)-Ba-1 fragments for quality evaluation in molecular studies. For O atom, the [6s4p] basis set is enriched with d polarization function and used along with the [10s5p4d] and [16s9p5d] basis sets for the theoretical study of the piezoelectric effect of perovskite (BaTiO3). The results of this work evidence that the piezoelectric properties in BaTiO3 can be caused by electrostatic interactions. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Agaricus blazei Murrill extracts have previously been shown to have anticarcinogenic and antimutagenic proper-ties. These results suggest that antimutagenic activity, besides the modulation of the immune system, might be involved in the anticarcinogenic action of A. blazei. To investigate the possible antimutagenic effect of A. blazei in vivo, we evaluated its effect on clastogenicity induced by cyclophosphamide (CP) in mice, using the micronucleus test in bone marrow (MNPCE) and in peripheral blood (MNRET). Male Swiss mice were treated with CP (25 or 50 mg/kg i.p.) or with CP plus mushroom solution at three different temperatures: 4, 21, and 60 degreesC. Aqueous solution of a mixture from various lineages of the mushroom inhibited induction of micronuclei by CP in bone marrow and in peripheral blood of mice. In contrast to the mixture of lineages, a single isolated lineage did not lead to a reduction of CP-induced MN frequencies in either bone marrow or blood cells of mice. The results suggest that under certain circumstances these mushrooms exhibit antimutagenic activities that might contribute to an anticarcinogenic effect. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V.

Trans-dehydrocrotonin, the major diterpene isolated from the bark of Croton cajucara, has good antiulcerogenic activity which, however, is accompanied by toxic effects. on the basis of these results, a semi-synthetic crotonin, named 4SRC, was prepared to determine whether this substance has similar antiulcerogenic activity with lower or no toxicity. The natural crotonin was also isolated from the bark of C. cajucara but was not used due to the small amount obtained. The cytotoxic effect of semi-synthetic crotonin, expressed as cell viability, was assessed in (a) lung fibroblast cell line (V79) derived from Chinese hamsters, a system commonly used for cytotoxicity studies, and (b) rat hepatocytes isolated from male Wistar rats. After treatment, cell viability was determined by 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide reduction (MTT reduction), total acid content and neutral red uptake assays. To evaluate V79 cell viability, different concentrations of semi-synthetic crotonin were incubated with the cells. To evaluate the antiulcerogenic effects of semi-synthetic crotonin (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg), we used the models of gastric ulcer induced by ethanol/HCl, stress, indomethacin/bethanechol, and ethanol in male Swiss mice and male Wistar rats. The substance had an IC50 = 500 muM in the neutral red uptake and MTT reduction tests and an IC50 = 200 muM in the nucleic acid content test. With regard to hepatocyte viability after treatment with semi-synthetic crotonin at different concentrations, semi-synthetic crotonin had an IC50 = 10-500 muM in the nucleic acid content and MTT reduction tests and an IC50 = 120 muM in the neutral red uptake test. In another experiment, V79 cells were incubated with the metabolites produced by hepatocytes treated with different concentrations of semi-synthetic crotonin. After a 4-h incubation, semi-synthetic crotonin had an IC50 = 500 muM in the MTT reduction and neutral red uptake tests and an IC50 = 370 muM in nucleic acid content test. The substance had significant antiulcerogenic activity in all models studied, suggesting the presence of a possible antisecretory effect combined with a cytoprotective effect. For this reason, the effect of semi-synthetic crotonin was also evaluated on biochemical parameters of gastric juice and gastric wall mucus, both obtained from pylorus-ligated mice. No significant differences were observed in these parameters between semi-synthetic crotonin-treated and control animals. The results obtained with semi-synthetic crotonin are promising, with a significant preventive effect against gastric ulcer induced by different agents. Our data also show that semi-synthetic crotonin was less toxic than dehydrocrotonin and that the cytotoxic effects decreases with the time that isolated hepatocytes were in culture. Aims: To evaluate mannan oligosaccharide (MOS) and threonine effects on performance, small intestine morphology and Salmonella spp. counts in Salmonella Enteritidis-challenged birds. Methods and Results: One-day-old chicks (1d) were distributed into five treatments: nonchallenged animals fed basal diet (RB-0), animals fed basal diet and infected with Salmonella Enteritidis (RB-I), animals fed high level of threonine and infected (HT-I), birds fed basal diet with MOS and infected (MOS-I), birds fed high level of threonine and MOS and infected (HT+MOS-I). Birds were inoculated at 2d with Salmonella Enteritidis, except RB-0 birds. Chicks fed higher dietary threonine and MOS showed performance similar to RB-0 and intestinal morphology recovery at 8 dpi. Salmonella counts and the number of Salmonella-positive animals were lower in HT+MOS-I compared with other challenged groups. Conclusion: Mannan oligosaccharides and threonine act synergistically, resulting in improved intestinal environment and recovery after Salmonella inoculation. Significance and Impact of the Study: Nutritional approaches may be useful to prevent Salmonella infection in the first week and putative carcass contamination at slaughter. This is the first report on the possible synergistic effect of mannan oligosaccharides and threonine, and further studies should be performed including performance, microbiota evaluation, composition of intestinal mucins and immune assessment. © 2012 The Society for Applied Microbiology.

In this study, the effect of Yersinia derivatives on nitric oxide (NO), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) production by murine peritoneal macrophages was investigated. Addition of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to the macrophage culture resulted in NO production that was dose dependent. on the other hand, bacterial cellular extract (CE) and Yersinia outer proteins (Yops) had no effect on NO production. The possible inhibitory effect of Yops on macrophage cultures stimulated with LPS was investigated. Yops partially inhibited NO production (67.4%) when compared with aminoguanidine. The effects of Yersinia derivatives on H2O2 production by macrophages were similar to those on NO production. LPS was the only derivative that stimulated H2O2 release in a dose-dependent manner. All Yersinia derivatives provoked the production of TNF-alpha, but LPS had the strongest effect, as observed for NO production. CE and Yops stimulated TNF-alpha production to a lesser extent than LPS. The results indicate the possibility that in vivo Yops may aid the evasion of the bacteria from the host defense mechanism by impairing the secretion of NO by macrophages. (C) 2003 Elsevier SAS.
