We report on light-emitting devices based on a green-phosphor compound (Mn-doped zinc silicate, Zn2SiO4: Mn) dispersed in a conductive polymeric blend (poly-o-methoxyaniline/polyvinylene fluoride, POMA/PVDF-TrFE). The devices exhibited high luminance in the green, good stability and homogeneous brilliance over effective areas up to 5 cm(2). The electroluminescence (EL) spectrum presented essentially the same characteristics as the photoluminescence (PL) and cathodoluminescence spectra, indicating that the light emission originates from decay of the same excited species, regardless of the excitation source. Operating characteristics were analyzed with current density - voltage (J - V) and luminance voltage ( L - V) curves to investigate the nature of the electroluminescence of the active material, which is still not completely understood.

This work describes a fabrication and test sequence of microvalves installed on micronozzles. The technique used to fabricate the micronozzles was powder blasting. The microvalves are actuators made from PVDF (polivinylidene fluoride), that is a piezoelectric polymer. The micronozzles have convergent-divergent shape with external diameter of 1mm and throat around 230μm. The polymer have low piezoelectric coefficient, for this reason a bimorph structure with dimensions of 2mm width and 4mm of length was build (two piezoelectric sheets were glued together with opposite polarization). Both sheets are recovered with a conductor thin film used as electrodes. Applying a voltage between the electrodes one sheet expands while the other contracts and this generate a vertical movement to the entire actuator. Appling +300V DC between the electrodes the volume flux rate, for a pressure ratio of 0.5, was 0.36 sccm. Applying -200V DC between the electrodes (that means it closed) the volume flux rate was 0.32 sccm, defining a possible range of flow between 0.32 and 0.36 sccm. The third measurement was performed using AC voltage (200V AC with frequency of 1Hz), where the actuator was oscillating. For pressure ratio of 0.5, the flow rate was 0.62 sccm. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The use of composite materials has increased in the recent decades, mainly in the aeronautics and automotives industries. In the present study is elaborated a computational simulation program of the bending test using the finite elements method, in the commercial software ANSYS. This simulation has the objective of analyze the mechanical behavior in bending of two composites with polymeric matrix reinforced with carbon fibers. Also are realized bending tests of the 3 points to obtain the resistances of the materials. Data from simulation and tests are used to make a comparison between two failures criteria, Tsai-Wu and Hashin criterion. Copyright © 2009 SAE International.

The methodology for fracture analysis of polymeric composites with scanning electron microscopes (SEM) is still under discussion. Many authors prefer to use sputter coating with a conductive material instead of applying low-voltage (LV) or variable-pressure (VP) methods, which preserves the original surfaces. The present work examines the effects of sputter coating with 25 nm of gold on the topography of carbon-epoxy composites fracture surfaces, using an atomic force microscope. Also, the influence of SEM imaging parameters on fractal measurements is evaluated for the VP-SEM and LV-SEM methods. It was observed that topographic measurements were not significantly affected by the gold coating at tested scale. Moreover, changes on SEM setup leads to nonlinear outcome on texture parameters, such as fractal dimension and entropy values. For VP-SEM or LV-SEM, fractal dimension and entropy values did not present any evident relation with image quality parameters, but the resolution must be optimized with imaging setup, accompanied by charge neutralization. © Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Composites made of Calcium-modified lead titanate (PTCa) and poly (ether-etherketone) (PEEK) high performance polymer matrix were prepared in the film form using a hot press. The ceramic volume fraction reaches up to 60 percent providing a composite with 0-3 and 1-3 mixed connectivities due to the high ceramic content and the resulting materials could be considered PEEK-bonded PTCa particulate composite. The composites were characterized using piezoelectric spectroscopy and ultrasonic immersion techniques. Values up to 38.5 pC/N were obtained for the longitudinal d33 piezoelectric coefficient. The composite was surface-mounted on a carbon fiber plate-like specimen and the ability of the PTCa/PEEK composite to detect acoustic emission (AE) is reported. © 2006 IEEE.

The contribution of new materials, involving composites and blends, has been reaching the most varied fields of science, as much of the scientific as technological point of view. This is due to the man's needs in applications, especially in medicine areas. Thus, this work shows the preparation and characterization of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) Composite films in order to analyse the incorporation of CaCO3 in PVDF for future application in bony restoration and bony filling. The films were prepared by casting method, where the PVDF pellet shape was dissolved in dimethylacetamide (DMA) and in a separate container CaCO3/DMA emulsion was also made. Soon afterwards they were mixed in several proportions 100/00, 95/05, 85/15, 70/30 in weight and left to dry in greenhouse. Homogeneous and flexible films were obtained and structurally characterized by attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR/ATR), thermal analyses (DSC, TGA), X-ray diffractometry, optical and scanning electron microscopies. The results showed that the material was a composite with good thermal stability until around 400 degrees C, the crystallinity of PVDF was non-polar alpha-phase and the obtained films were porous, being these filled with CaCO3. The continuous use of structural polymer composites in aeronautical industry has required the development of repairing techniques of damages found in different types of laminates. The most usually adopted procedure to investigate the repair of composite laminates has been by repairing damages simulated in laminated composite specimens. This work shows the influence of structural repair technique on mechanical properties of a typical carbon fiber/epoxy laminate used in aerospace industry. When analyzed by tensile test, the laminates with and without repair present tensile strength values of 670 and 892 MPa, respectively, and tensile modulus of 53.0 and 67.2 GPa, respectively. By this result, it is possible to observe a decrease of the measured mechanical properties of the repaired composites. When submitted to fatigue test, it is observed that in loads higher than 250 MPa, this laminate presents a low life cycle (lower than 400,000 cycles). The fatigue performance of both laminates is comparable, but the non-repaired laminate presented higher tensile and fatigue resistance when compared with the repaired laminate.

Micronozzles with piezoelectric actuator were fabricated and investigated. The micronozzles were fabricated in glass substrates using a powder-blasting technique, and the actuator is a bimorph structure made from a piezoelectric polymer. The actuator was located at the nozzle outlet, and was driven in an oscillating mode by applying an alternating voltage across the actuator electrodes. With a pressure difference between inlet and outlet, the gas flow rate through the device was increased. This effect was quantified, and compared to a similar micronozzle with no actuator. The increase in the flow rate was defined as the gas flow through the micronozzle with actuator oscillating minus the gas flow without actuator, was found to depend on the inlet pressure, the pressure ratio, and the nozzle throat diameter. Weight reduction and improved damage tolerance characteristics were the prime drivers to develop new family of materials for the aerospace/ aeronautical industry. Aiming this objective, a new lightweight Fiber/ Metal Laminate (FML) has been developed. The combination of metal and polymer composite laminates can create a synergistic effect on many properties. The mechanical properties of FML shows improvements over the properties of both aluminum alloys and composite materials individually. Due to their excellent properties, FML are being used as fuselage skin structures of the next generation commercial aircrafts. One of the advantages of FML when compared with conventional carbon fiber/epoxy composites is the low moisture absorption. The moisture absorption in FML composites is slower when compared with polymer composites, even under the relatively harsh conditions, due to the barrier of the aluminum outer layers. Due to this favorable atmosphere, recently big companies such as EMBRAER, Aerospatiale, Boing, Airbus, and so one, starting to work with this kind of materials as an alternative to save money and to guarantee the security of their aircrafts.

Aramid fiber reinforced polymer composites have been used in a wide variety of applications, such as aerospace, marine, sporting equipment and in the defense sector, due to their outstanding properties at low density. The most widely adopted procedure to investigate the repair of composites has been by repairing damages simulated in composite specimens. This work presents the structural repair influence on tensile and fatigue properties of a typical aramid fiber/epoxy composite used in the aerospace industry. According to this work, the aramid/epoxy composites with and without repair present tensile strength values of 618 and 680MPa, respectively, and tensile modulus of 26.5 and 30.1 GPa, respectively. Therefore, the fatigue results show that in loads higher than 170 MPa, both composites present a low life cycle (lower than 200,000 cycles) and the repaired aramid/epoxy composite presented low fatigue resistance in low and high cycle when compared with non-repaired composite. With these results, it is possible to observe a decrease of the measured mechanical properties of the repaired composites.

The polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/barium zirconium titanate Ba[Zr0.1Ti0.9]O3 (BZT) polymer-ceramic composites with different volume percentage are obtained from solution mixing and hot-pressing method. Their structural and electrical properties are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinement, cluster modeling, scanning electron microscope and dielectric study. XRD patterns of PVA/BZT polymer-ceramics composite (with 50% volume fractions) indicate no obvious differences than the XRD patterns of pure BZT which shows that the crystal structure is still stable in the composite. The scanning electron micrograph indicates that the BZT ceramic is dispersed homogeneously in the polymer matrix without agglomeration. The dielectric permittivity (ε r) and the dielectric loss (tan δ) of the composites increase with the increase of the volume fraction of BZT ceramic. Theoretical models are employed to rationalize the dielectric behavior of the polymer composites. The dielectric properties of the composites display good stability within a wide range of temperature and frequency. The excellent dielectric properties of these polymer-ceramic composites indicate that the BZT/PVA composites can be a candidate for embedded capacitors. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
