Loss of vision secondary to obsessive-compulsive disorder: a case report

Objective: To report a rare case of self-inflicted eye injury secondary to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).Method: Case report.Results: A 41 year-old patient had significant bilateral visual loss and blunt trauma through touching his ocular cavities due to recurrent doubts regarding their shape and urges to check the format of bones and cartilages. Differential diagnosis with tic disorders is discussed, and the patient's treatment approach is described.Conclusion: Although rare, severe clinical complications can occur in OCD. Phenomenology of OCD: Lessons from a large multicenter study and implications for ICD-11

This study aimed to investigate the phenomenology of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), addressing specific questions about the nature of obsessions and compulsions, and to contribute to the World Health Organization's (WHO) revision of OCD diagnostic guidelines. Data from 1001 patients from the Brazilian Research Consortium on Obsessive Compulsive Spectrum Disorders were used. Patients were evaluated by trained clinicians using validated instruments, including the Dimensional Yale Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale, the University of Sao Paulo Sensory Phenomena Scale, and the Brown Assessment of Beliefs Scale. The aims were to compare the types of sensory phenomena (SP, subjective experiences that precede or accompany compulsions) in OCD patients with and without tic disorders and to determine the frequency of mental compulsions, the co-occurrence of obsessions and compulsions, and the range of insight. SP were common in the whole sample, but patients with tic disorders were more likely to have physical sensations and urges only. Mental compulsions occurred in the majority of OCD patients. It was extremely rare for OCD patients to have obsessions without compulsions. A wide range of insight into OCD beliefs was observed, with a small subset presenting no insight. The data generated from this large sample will help practicing clinicians appreciate the full range of OCD symptoms and confirm prior studies in smaller samples the degree to which insight varies. These findings also support specific revisions to the WHO's diagnostic guidelines for OCD, such as describing sensory phenomena, mental compulsions and level of insight, so that the world-wide recognition of this disabling disorder is increased. Entre os muros da escola: o saber experiencial emergente nas aulas de educação física da periferia

This study aimed to analyze the teachers´ knowledge of a physical education teacher network state of São Paulo. The interviewed reported having problems regarding the use of the court, especially because there is invasion of the community to smoking marijuana and/ou playing football, revealing the predominance of experiential knowledge to work in a new school, whose location and local culture do not seem to prioritize this social space as learning, dissemination and preservation of other bodily manifestations of the process of human civilization. It was found in such a setting an imbalance of the relative strengths of power between teacher and students, from schools, football and drugs in relation to body movement culture, it being understood that the relationships between these individuals are interdependent and dynamic. Finally, it urges an integrated process in educational, family, social and political fields from the perspective of balancing forces in relation to the use of that space, providing conditions for teaching and propagation of content (games, sports, gymnastics, dances and fights) of the body movement culture.
