Electrically conductive poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF) - polyaniline blends of different composition were synthesized by chemical polymerization of aniline in a mixture of PVDF and dimethylformamide (DMF) and studied by electrical conductivity measurement, UV-Vis-NIR and FTIR spectroscopy. The samples were obtained as flexible films by pressing the powder at 180 degrees C for 5 min. The electrical conductivity showed a great dependence on the syntheses parameters. The higher value of the electrical conductivity was obtained for the oxidant/aniline molar ratio equal to 1 and p-toluenesulfonic acid-TSA/aniline ratio between 3 and 6. UV-Vis-NIR and FTIR spectra of the blend are similar to the doped PANI, indicating that the PANI is responsible for the high electrical conductivity of the blend. The electrical conductivity of blend proved to be stable as a function of temperature decreasing about one order at temperature of 100 degrees C. The route used to obtain the polymer blend showed to be a suitable alternative in order to obtain PVDF/PANI-TSA blends with high electrical conductivity. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A preparation method for a new electrode material based on the LiNi0.8Co0.2O2/polyaniline (PANI) composite is reported. This material is prepared by in situ polymerization of aniline in the presence of LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 assisted by ultrasonic irradiation. The materials are characterized by XRD, TG-DTA, FTIR, XPS, SEM-EDX, AFM, nitrogen adsorption (BET surface area) and electrical conductivity measurements. PANI in the emeraldine salt form interacts with metal-oxide particles to assure good connectivity. The dc electrical conductivity measurements at room temperature indicate that conductivity values are one order of magnitude higher in the composite than in the oxide alone. This behavior determines better reversibility for Li-insertion in charge-discharge cycles compared to the pristine mixed oxide when used as electrode of lithium batteries. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Blends of polyaniline (PAni) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) have been produced using core-shell particle synthesis, which is advantageous because it allows changing surface-related properties of PMMA with relatively small amounts of PAW and without the use of organic solvents. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements indicated that the deposition of pollyaniline seems to alter the regular shape of the primary acrylic latex particles. The coverage of PMMA particles by PAW was confirmed by FTIR measurements, where distinct data were obtained from the transmission and diffuse reflectance modes, since the latter is surface sensitive. The zeta potential, which is also a surface-related property, increased with the contents of PAW, as the shells probably became protonated with PAW in the emeraldine salt form. Coverage with PAW did not affect the thermal bulk properties of the PMMA shells.

PANI-LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 nanocomposite material with improved properties as positive electrode was prepared by a new synthesis method. In a first step, LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 mixed oxide in the form of a fine powder was dispersed in aniline and this suspension was sprayed on the surface of an aqueous solution of HCl and ammonium peroxodisulfate. The resulting PANI-LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 nanocomposite is spontaneously formed by polymerization of the aniline molecules present in the drops together with small particles of the oxide. This method induces the formation of nanocomposites showing a better distribution of the oxide particles in the polymer matrix than that observed in related PANI-LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 microcomposites prepared under ultrasound irradiation to disperse the oxide particles during PANI polymerization. Measurements of electrical conductivity and zeta potential, as well as structural characterization of PANI-LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 nanocomposites, reveal the existence of relatively strong interactions between the conducting polymer and the oxide particles. This feature determines higher values of the electrical conductivity (0.5 S cm(-1)) and of the average operative voltage (3.6 V), as well as of other technological parameters of the nanocomposite when it is used as the positive electrode of rechargeable lithium batteries, in comparison to those of the related microcomposite materials already reported.

X-band electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements have been performed on a conducting free-standing film of polyaniline plasticized and protonated with di-n-dodecyl ester of sulfosuccinic acid (DDoESSA). The magnetic field was applied parallel and perpendicular to the plane of the film. At around 75 K a transition is observed from Pauli susceptibility to a localized state in which the spin 1/2 polarons behave as spin 1/2 dimers. A rough estimation of the intradimer and interdimer exchange constants is obtained. Below 5 K, ESR data reveal a weak ferromagnetism with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vector mainly oriented in the plane of the film. The existence of a relatively well-defined n-fold axis along the chain direction in the crystalline regions confers a symmetry compatible with such analysis. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

This work presents the preparation and characterization of PZT ceramic obtained by the polymeric precursor method (PPM). The influence of the synthesis method on the grain size and the morphology are also object of study. The fabrication and characterization of composite films with 0-3 connectivity, immersing nanoparticles of PZT into the non-polar poly(vinylidene fluoride) -PVDF as the polymer matrix were presented. For comparison there are results obtained with composite samples made of ceramic particles unrecovered and recovered with a conducting polymer, the polyaniline (PAni).

Blend films (free-standing) containing 20% in volume of polyaniline (PANI) in 80% of natural rubber (NR) were fabricated by casting in three different ways: (1) adding PANI-EB (emeraldine base) dissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) to the latex (NRL), (2) adding PANI-EB dissolved in in-cresol to NR dissolved in xylol (NRD), (3) overlaying the surface of a pure NR cast film with a PANI layer grown by in situ polymerization (NRO). All the films were immersed into HCl solution to achieve the primary doping (protonation) of PANI before the characterization. The main goal here was to investigate the elastomeric and electrical conductivity properties for each blend, which may be applied as pressure and deformation sensors in the future. The characterization was carried out by optical microscopy, dc conductivity, vibrational spectroscopy (infrared absorption and Raman scattering), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), and tensile stress-strain curves. The results suggest that the NRL blend is the most suitable in terms of mechanical and electrical properties required for applications in pressure and deformation sensors: a gain of conductivity without losing the elastomeric property of the rubber. X-ray irradiation is shown to affect electronic properties of polyaniline (PANi) in composite Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of PANi and cadmium stearate, in a similar way to acid doping. The time it takes for the shift in the UV-vis spectra, characteristic of PANi doping, increases linearly with the film thickness, thus indicating a surface-controlled process. The humidity of the environment under which the films are irradiated is also of extreme importance. No shin is observed under vacuum or under dry atmospheres of N-2, O-2 and Ar. For humid environments the time for the shift decreases with increasing relative humidity.
