Conditional reasoning: A key to assessing computer-based knowledge-building communication processes

This article describes a methodological approach to conditional reasoning in online asynchronous learning environments such as Virtual-U VGroups, developed by SFU, BC, Canada, consistent with the notion of meaning implication: If part of a meaning C is embedded in B and a part of a meaning B is embedded in A, then A implies C in terms of meaning [Piaget 91]. A new transcript analysis technique was developed to assess the flows of conditional meaning implications and to identify the occurrence of hypotheses and connections among them in two human science graduate mixed-mode online courses offered in the summer/spring session of 1997 by SFU. Flows of conditional meaning implications were confronted with Virtual-U VGroups threads and results of the two courses were compared. Findings suggest that Virtual-U VGroups is a knowledge-building environment although the tree-like Virtual-U VGroups threads should be transformed into neuronal-like threads. Findings also suggest that formulating hypotheses together triggers a collaboratively problem-solving process that scaffolds knowledge-building in asynchronous learning environments: A pedagogical technique and an built-in tool for formulating hypotheses together are proposed. © Springer Pub. Use of Internet and online interactions in a Brazilian sample

This work focused on the use of internet and online interactions and was based on data collected from a sample of Brazilian college students (64 people) who were asked to answer the Face-to-Face and Online Interaction Survey. The outcomes are analyzed in this paper and from them it is possible to observe patterns on internet interaction. It was also possible to conclude that the sample frequently uses the Internet, its online interactions and that this kind of interaction is used as a complement to face-to-face communication.

The growing need for organizations to make themselves present on the Internet, the study aimed to demonstrate the importance of public relations activity in crisis management and analysis of the crisis in Americanas.com site. It also aims to analyze the electronic scene, highlighting their implications for consumer relations in e-commerce. In addition, as a consequence of conflicts, settles a loss situation, financial and reputation. A crisis begins with planning and communication failures, it is clear that public relations is essential in business today, as interest in integrating their knowledge and opinions, and maintaining a global view of the environment in which it operates. The case study analysis provided confirmation that the public relations face a growing market, which requires qualified and updated to do crisis management, especially in the online environment

Cálculo estrutural de barreiras: Desenvolvimento de um programa computacional de interface online

This study aimed to develop a computer program which systematizes the structural shielding design calculation in diagnostic radiology facilities. For this purpose methodology of the National Council of Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP 147[5]) was used. By comparative statistics studies, it was verified if reference parameters values suggested by the US publication correspond to the average national values. The World Wide Web was chosen because of its characteristics as a powerful mean of communication, especially in terms of the wide variety of useful resources and easy access. To compare the reference values of some parameters proposed by NCRP 147 to Brazilian average, studies about the normalized workload per patient, performance of X-ray tube and primary air kerma, unshielded, at one meter from the focal point of the X-ray tube were made. Through this research, relative differences were found. In workload values this differences reached up to 50% in mammography compared to those presented by the NCRP 147; in X-ray tube performance the percentage differences reached 69% in dental radiology, and air kerma results amounted 31% in fluoroscopy. This demonstrates the importance of validation of international protocols to local realities

This paper discusses the possibility of receiver’s participation in the production of television content mediated by online social networks. Buoyed by media convergence, this research demonstrates how the receiver has been working in online digital media such as TV can take advantage of the specific interaction between the medias to promote the creation of collaborative content, in which the user of social network may interfere the result of the product developed, becoming a new mediatic protagonist. Tool not so used for the production of television that slowly begins to enter the virtual reality, the forging of this new compose process would not only entertain the receiver, but also enrich the language and content television constantly criticized. This study shows the influence of the television medium in which is discussed online, the attitude still shy of the user in content production, and discusses the potential of social networks as a channel of communication between producers and receivers. This work is structured from the definition of social network, in addition to conducting the study what kind of interaction between TV and online social networks is practiced today. Finally, debate whether the potential interaction between TV and social networks is used to its fullest.
