This paper is concerned with the numerical solutions of time dependent two-dimensional incompressible flows. By using the primitive variables of velocity and pressure, the Navier-Stokes and mass conservation equations are solved by a semi-implicit finite difference projection method. A new bounded higher order upwind convection scheme is employed to deal with the non-linear (advective) terms. The procedure is an adaptation of the GENSMAC (J. Comput. Phys. 1994; 110: 171-186) methodology for calculating confined and free surface fluid flows at both low and high Reynolds numbers. The calculations were performed by using the 2D version of the Freeflow simulation system (J. Comp. Visual. Science 2000; 2:199-210). In order to demonstrate the capabilities of the numerical method, various test cases are presented. These are the fully developed flow in a channel, the flow over a backward facing step, the die-swell problem, the broken dam flow, and an impinging jet onto a flat plate. The numerical results compare favourably with the experimental data and the analytical solutions. Copyright (c) 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

We present a numerical solution for the steady 2D Navier-Stokes equations using a fourth order compact-type method. The geometry of the problem is a constricted symmetric channel, where the boundary can be varied, via a parameter, from a smooth constriction to one possessing a very sharp but smooth corner allowing us to analyse the behaviour of the errors when the solution is smooth or near singular. The set of non-linear equations is solved by the Newton method. Results have been obtained for Reynolds number up to 500. Estimates of the errors incurred have shown that the results are accurate and better than those of the corresponding second order method. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present a numerical scheme for solving the time-independent nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation in two dimensions describing the Bose-Einstein condensate of trapped interacting neutral atoms at zero temperature. The trap potential is taken to be of the harmonic-oscillator type and the interaction both attractive and repulsive. The Gross-Pitaevskii equation is numerically integrated consistent with the correct boundary conditions at the origin and in the asymptotic region. Rapid convergence is obtained in all cases studied. In the attractive case there is a limit Co the maximum number of atoms in the condensate. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

We study certain stationary and time-evolution problems of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates using the numerical solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation with both spherical and axial symmetries. We consider time-evolution problems initiated by suddenly changing the interatomic scattering length or harmonic trapping potential in a stationary condensate. These changes introduce oscillations in the condensate which are studied in detail. We use a time iterative split-step method for the solution of the time-dependent GP equation, where all nonlinear and linear non-derivative terms are treated separately from the time propagation with the kinetic energy terms. Even for an arbitrarily strong nonlinear term this leads to extremely accurate and stable results after millions of time iterations of the original equation.

An iterative Neumann series method, employing a real auxiliary scattering integral equation, is used to calculate scattering lengths and phase shifts for the atomic Yukawa and exponential potentials. For these potentials the original Neumann series diverges. The present iterative method yields results that are far better, in convergence, stability and precision, than other momentum space methods. Accurate result is obtained in both cases with an estimated error of about 1 in 10(10) after some 8-10 iterations.

Improved numerical approach for the time-independent Gross-Pitaevskii nonlinear Schrödinger equation
Resumo:
In the present work, we improve a numerical method, developed to solve the Gross-Pitaevkii nonlinear Schrödinger equation. A particular scaling is used in the equation, which permits us to evaluate the wave-function normalization after the numerical solution. We have a two-point boundary value problem, where the second point is taken at infinity. The differential equation is solved using the shooting method and Runge-Kutta integration method, requiring that the asymptotic constants, for the function and its derivative, be equal for large distances. In order to obtain fast convergence, the secant method is used. © 1999 The American Physical Society.

fit the context of normalized variable formulation (NVF) of Leonard and total variation diminishing (TVD) constraints of Harten. this paper presents an extension of it previous work by the authors for solving unsteady incompressible flow problems. The main contributions of the paper are threefold. First, it presents the results of the development and implementation of a bounded high order upwind adaptative QUICKEST scheme in the 3D robust code (Freeflow), for the numerical solution of the full incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Second, it reports numerical simulation results for 1D hock tube problem, 2D impinging jet and 2D/3D broken clam flows. Furthermore, these results are compared with existing analytical and experimental data. and third, it presents the application of the numerical method for solving 3D free surface flow problems. A first order analytical model for optimal small amplitude attitude maneuvers of spacecraft with cylindrical symmetry in an elliptical orbits is presented. The optimization problem is formulated as a Mayer problem with the control torques provided by a power limited propulsion system. The state is defined by Seffet-Andoyer's variables and the control by the components of the propulsive torques. The Pontryagin Maximum Principle is applied to the problem and the optimal torques are given explicitly in Serret-Andoyer's variables and their adjoints. For small amplitude attitude maneuvers, the optimal Hamiltonian function is linearized around a reference attitude. A complete first order analytical solution is obtained by simple quadrature and is expressed through a linear algebraic system involving the initial values of the adjoint variables. A numerical solution is obtained by taking the Euler angles formulation of the problem, solving the two-point boundary problem through the shooting method, and, then, determining the Serret-Andoyer variables through Serret-Andoyer transformation. Numerical results show that the first order solution provides a good approximation to the optimal control law and also that is possible to establish an optimal control law for the artificial satellite's attitude. Three sets of non-singular canonical variables for the rotational motion are analyzed. These sets are useful when the angle between z-axis of a coordinate system fixed in artificial satellite ( here defined by the directions of principal moments of inertia of the satellite) and the rotational angular momentum vector is zero or when the angle between Z-inertial axis and rotational angular momentum vector is zero. The goal of this paper is to compare all these sets and to determine the benefits of their uses. With this objective, the dynamical equations of each set were derived, when mean hamiltonian associate with the gravity gradient torque is included. For the torque-free rotational motion, analytical solutions are computed for symmetrical satellite for each set of variables. When the gravity gradient torque is included, an analytical solution is shown for one of the sets and a numerical solution is obtained for one of the other sets. By this analysis we can conclude that: the dynamical equation for the first set is simple but it has neither clear geometrical nor physical meaning; the other sets have geometrical and physical meaning but their dynamical equations are more complex.
