In maize (Zea mays L.), the inadequate nitrogen supply and planting density are considered limiting factors to the grain yield. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of different nitrogen levels and plant densities to the maize yield components and productivity. The experiment was carried out in the Cerrado region, located in the southern of the Maranhao State, Brazil, in a clay Oxisol (Ustox), cropped under the no-tillage system for six years. The randomized completed blocks experimental design with four replications was used, with treatments arrangement in a 5 x 4 factorial. The treatments were a combination of five doses of nitrogen as urea (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg ha(-1)) and four plant densities (25,000; 50,000; 75,000 and 100,000 plants he). The grain number and mass per spike and grain mass per plant were improved by increased N and decreased plant density. Higher incomes of grains were obtained with adding concomitantly in N doses and in plants density. The maximum grain yield (11,9 Mg ha(-1)) was obtained with 120 kg ha(-1) of N and 83,000 plants ha(-1).

Smooth Cayenne.

Increasing out-of-season corn productivity is possible by the application of nitrogen fertilizers even when in succession to soybean. On the other hand, information concerning the best sources of nitrogen and ways of splitting the doses to be applied is still scarce. Having that in mind, an experiment was carried out viewing to evaluate the effects of sources of nitrogen and ways of splitting doses of those N fertilizers on out-of-season corn sown in succession to soybean cultivated in a no-tillage system. The experiment took place in Chapadão do Céu, state of Goiás, Brasil (latitude of 18°35’42’’ South, longitude of 52°47’59’’ West and mean altitude above sea level of 802 m) in an Acrutox. The experimental units were distributed in the field in accordance with a randomized complete block design, in a factorial scheme 3 X 5 + 1, with four replications. Three were the sources of N: urea, urea extruded with starch (Amireia®) and ammonium sulfonitrate with a nitrification inhibitor (Entec®) and five the ways of splitting the nitrogen dose : 90-0, 60-30, 45-45, 30-60, and 0-90 in which the first fraction was applied at sowing and the second in side dressing. In addition to those, there was a check treatment, without N. All plots received, at sowing, 12 kg ha-1 of N by the mixture NPK. The ways of splitting the N dose and the sources of N had no significant effect on the levels of N and S in the leaves, first ear height, the final plant population, the number of ears per plant, and the number of grains per ear. N in the Entec® form at the highest doses applied in side dressing resulted in the highest grain yield, independently of the way the N dose was split. Only in the form Entec® the dose of 90 kg ha-1 of N increased grain productivity by 9.6% in comparison with the check treatment.

The effects of nitrogen availability on growth and photosynthesis were followed in plants of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L., var. CATISSOL-01) grown in the greenhouse under natural photoperiod. The sunflower plants were grown in vermiculite under two contrasting nitrogen supply, with nitrogen supplied as ammonium nitrate. Higher nitrogen concentration resulted in higher shoot dry matter production per plant and the effect was apparent from 29 days after sowing (DAS). The difference in dry matter production was mainly attributed to the effect of nitrogen on leaf production and on individual leaf dry matter. The specific leaf weight (SLW) was not affected by the nitrogen supply. The photosynthetic CO2 assimilation (A) of the target leaves was remarkably improved by high nitrogen nutrition. However, irrespective of nitrogen supply, the decline in photosynthetic CO2 assimilation occurred before the end of leaf growth. Although nitrogen did not change significantly stomatal conductance (gs), high-N grown plants had lower intercellular CO2 concentration (C-i) when compared with low-N grown plants. Transpiration rate (E) was increased in high-N grown plants only at the beginning of leaf growth. However, this not resulted in lower intrinsic water use efficiency (WUE). (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V.. Biomass and ethanol production by industrial Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains were strongly affected by the structural complexity of the nitrogen source during fermentation in media containing galactose, and supplemented with a nitrogen source varying from a single ammonium salt (ammonium sulfate) to free amino acids (casamino acids) and peptides (peptone). Diauxie was observed at low galactose concentrations independent of nitrogen supplementation. At high sugar concentrations altered patterns of galactose utilisation were observed. Biomass accumulation and ethanol production depended on the nature of the nitrogen source and were different for baking and brewing ale and lager strains. Baking yeast showed improved galactose fermentation performance in the medium supplemented with casamino acids. High biomass production was observed with peptone and casamino acids for the ale brewing strain, however high ethanol production was observed only in the presence of casamino acids. Conversely, peptone was the nitrogen supplement that induced higher biomass and ethanol production for the lager brewing strain. Ammonium salts always induced poor yeast performance. The results with galactose differed from those obtained with glucose and maltose which indicated that supplementation with a nitrogen source in the peptide form (peptone) was more positive for yeast metabolism, suggesting that sugar catabolite repression has a central role in yeast performance in a medium containing nitrogen sources with differing levels of structural complexity.
