Positive leader characteristics from high-speed video observations

Based on analyses of high-speed video recordings of cloud-to-ground lightning in Brazil and the USA, the characteristics of positive cloud-to-ground (+CG) leaders are presented. The high frame rates permitted the average, 2-dimensional speeds of development along the paths of the channels to be resolved with good accuracy. The values range from 0.3 to 6.0 x 10(5) ms(-1) with a mean of 2.7 x 10(5) ms(-1). Contrary to what is usually assumed, downward +CG leader speeds are similar to downward -CG leader speeds. Our observations also show that the speeds tend to increase by a factor of 1.1 to 6.5 as they approach the ground. The presence of short duration, recoil leaders (RLs) during the development of positive leaders reveal a highly branched structure that is not usually recorded when using conventional photographic and video cameras. The existence of the RLs may help to explain observations of UHF-VHF radiation during the development of +CG flashes.

Alternative interpretations of some earliest ediacaran fossils from China

In a letter to Nature (February, 2011), Xunlai Yuan and collaborators recorded carbon compression fossils from black shales of the Lantian Formation (Ediacaran), southern Anhui Province, South China. The new fossils, described under five morphological types (Types A to E), exhibit degrees of morphological differentiation suggesting that they were multicellular eukaryotes. Some of the Lantian macrofossils were interpreted as algae, but others are of unknown affinities. For reasons noted in this discussion, Type A fossils attracted our particular attention, and we suggest an alternative interpretation of their affinities. According to our view, some of them (at least those with three faces and no globose holdfast at their base) may represent conulariid cnidarians or close medusozoan relatives. The undistorted organism probably was a three-sided cone in life. We believe that our suggested alternative interpretations of the anatomy and affinities of the fossils in question can be useful in guiding future research on the oldest currently known fossil assemblage of multicellular organisms. Abordagem Leader: uma aproximação com o programa territórios da cidadania

Analyzing evidences of the LEADER approach in the Territories of Citizenship Program consists in the immediate objective of this paper. Considering the current context in which the territorial approach takes on the challenge of promoting a less excluding development, the deepening of discussions and experiences highlighted in national and international scope can add elements for analysis and creation of proposals for a more efficient development. Methodologically, a qualitative analysis of bibliographic data and interviews involving focal subject types was performed. In the analysis performed it was possible to understand that the policy of territorial approach is necessary, but it has structural implications that hinder the work of those who should mediate and sensitize the most excluded social groups. Therefore, so that there is an effective policy it would be necessary to create participatory and emancipatory models able to produce structural changes.
