Rate coefficients for direct radiative association of carbon and nitrogen atoms to form CN, and of carbon ions and nitrogen atoms to form CN+ ions, are calculated for temperatures in the range of 300 to 14,700 K. For the CN molecule, the rate coefficients can be represented by the standard expression, k(CN)(T) = 7.87 x 10(-19)(T/300)(0.056) exp (-96.0/T) cm(3) s(-1) for temperatures between 300 and 2700 K and k(CN)(T) = 1.37 x 10(-18)(T/300)-0.128 exp (-520.1/T) cm(-3) s(-1) at T > 2700 K. For the CN+ ion, the corresponding expression is k(CN+)(T) = 1.08 x 10(-18)(T/300)(0.071) exp (-57.5/T) cm(-3) s(-1) for the temperature range studied. Calculated rate coefficients k(CN) are about 2 orders of magnitude lower than the canonical value used in the modeling of the chemistry of various astrophysical environments.

The A (2)Sigma(+) and X(2)Pi electronic states of the SiP species have been investigated theoretically at a very high level of correlation treatment (CASSCF/MRSDCI). Very accurate potential energy curves are presented for both states, as well as the associated spectroscopic constants as derived from the vib-rotational energy levels determined by means of the numerical solution of the radial Schrodinger equation. Electronic transition moment function, oscillator strengths, Einstein coefficients for spontaneous emission, and Franck-Condon factors for the A(2)Sigma(+)-X(2)Pi system have been calculated. Dipole moment functions and radiative lifetimes for both states have also been determined. Spin-orbit coupling constants are also reported. The radiative lifetimes for the A(2)Sigma(+) state, taking into account the spin-orbit diagonal correction to the X(2)Pi state, decrease from a value of 138 ms at v' = 0 to 0.48 ms at v' = 8, and, for the X(2)Pi state, from 2.32 s at v = 1 to 0.59 s at v = 5. Vibrational and rotational transitions are expected to be relatively strong.

Cognitive Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary area of research that combines measurement of brain activity (mostly by means of neuroimaging) with a simultaneous performance of cognitive tasks by human subjects. These investigations have been successful in the task of connecting the sciences of the brain (Neurosciences) and the sciences of the mind (Cognitive Sciences). Advances on this kind of research provide a map of localization of cognitive functions in the human brain. Do these results help us to understand how mind relates to the brain? In my view, the results obtained by the Cognitive Neurosciences lead to new investigations in the domain of Molecular Neurobiology, aimed at discovering biophysical mechanisms that generate the activity measured by neuroimaging instruments. In this context, I argue that the understanding of how ionic/molecular processes support cognition and consciousness cannot be made by means of the standard reductionist explanations. Knowledge of ionic/molecular meclianisms can contribute to our understanding of the human mind as long as we assume an alternative form of explanation, based on psycho-physical similarities, together with an ontological view of mentality and spirituality as embedded in physical nature (and not outside nature, as frequently assumed in western culture).

The cellular and molecular characteristics of a cell line (BME26) derived from embryos of the cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus were studied. The cells contained glycogen inclusions, numerous mitochondria, and vesicles with heterogeneous electron densities dispersed throughout the cytoplasm. Vesicles contained lipids and sequestered palladium meso-porphyrin (Pd-mP) and rhodamine-hemoglobin, suggesting their involvement in the autophagic and endocytic pathways. The cells phagocytosed yeast and expressed genes encoding the antimicrobial peptides (microplusin and defensin). A cDNA library was made and 898 unique mRNA sequences were obtained. Among them, 556 sequences were not significantly similar to any sequence found in public databases. Annotation using Gene Ontology revealed transcripts related to several different functional classes. We identified transcripts involved in immune response such as ferritin, serine proteases, protease inhibitors,. antimicrobial peptides, heat shock protein, glutathione S-transferase, peroxidase, and NADPH oxidase. BME26 cells transfected with a plasmid carrying a red fluorescent protein reporter gene (DsRed2) transiently expressed DsRed2 for up to 5 weeks. We conclude that BME26 can be used to experimentally analyze diverse biological processes that occur in R. (B.) microplus such as the innate immune response to tick-borne pathogens. The complex reaction between VO2+ ((1)A(1)/(3)A) and C2H4 (Ag-1(g)/(3)A(1)) to yield VO+ ((1)Delta/(3)Sigma) and CH3CHO ('A'/(3)A) has been studied by means of B3LYP/6-31G* and B3LYP/6-311G(2d,p) calculations. The structures of all reactants, products, intermediates, and transition structures of this reaction have been optimized and characterized at the fundamental singlet and first excited triplet electronic states. Crossing points are localized, and possible spin inversion processes are discussed by means of the intrinsic reaction coordinate approach. Relevant stationary points along the most favorable reaction pathways have been studied at the CCSD/6-311G(2d,p)//B3LYP/6-311G(2d,p) calculation level. The theoretical results allow the development of thermodynamic and kinetic arguments about the reaction pathways of the title process. In the singlet state, the first step is the barrierless obtention of a reactant complex associated with the formation of a V-C bond, while in the triplet state a three-membered ring addition complex with the V bonded to the two C atoms is obtained. Similar behavior is found in the exit channels: the product complexes can be formed from isolated products without barriers. The reactant and product complexes are the most stable stationary points in the singlet and triplet electronic states. From the singlet state reactant complex, two reaction pathways are posssible to reach the triplet state product complex. (i) A mechanism in which a hydrogen transfer process is the first and rate limiting step and the second step is an oxygen transfer between vanadium and carbon atoms with a concomitant change in the spin state. The crossing point between singlet and triplet spin states is not kinetically relevant because it takes place at a later stage occurring in the exit channel. (ii) A mechanism in which the first stage renders a four-membered ring between vanadyl cation and the ethylene fragment and an oxygencarbon bond is formed; on going from this minimum to the second transition structure, associated with a carbon-vanadium bond breaking process, the crossing point between singlet and triplet spin states is reached. The final step is the hydrogen transfer between both carbon atoms to yield the product complex. In this case the spin change opens a lower barrier pathway. The transition structures with larger values of relative energies for both reactive channels of VO2+ ((1)A(1)) + C2H4 (Ag-1) --> VO+ ((3)Sigma) + CH3CHO ((1)A') present similar energies, and the two reaction pathways can be considered as competitive.

Mutation and recombination processes are involved in the genetic and phenotypic variations of RNA viruses, leading to the emergence of new variant strains, and give rise to virus population diversity to be modeled by the host, particularly by the immune system, as occurred with infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) in chickens. The consequence is a continuous emergence of new IBV variants with regard to pathotypes, serotypes, and protectotypes. Nucleotide sequencing and subsequent genetic analysis of the S1 and N protein gene sequences provide a fast and accurate method to classify and predict IBV genotype, and a powerful instrument to monitor phylogenetic and epidemiological evolution of IBV variants. Despite the use of vaccination programmes, infectious bronchitis has become a serious problem in Brazil. Thus, a significant number of IBV field variants have been identified circulating in the Brazilian commercial poultries between 2000 to 2006 and more recently in Argentina. These viruses seem to be indigenous, because they demonstrated a low genetic relatedness with the majority of the reference strains from North America, Europe and Asia, but were moderately to highly related one to another. In summary, indigenous field IBV variants were evolving and circulating in the field in Brazil and Argentina, and should be considered as initial candidates for protection against current IBV infectious in chickens. However, in vitro and in vivo studies are needed to determine the pathogenicity and immunogenecity of these new isolates, before defining a new vaccine strain.

The vitrification and devitrification features of lead fluoride are investigated by means of molecular dynamic simulations. The influence of heating rate on the devitrification temperature as well as the dependence of the glass properties on its thermal history, i.e., the cooling rate employed, is identified. As expected, different glasses are obtained when the cooling rates differ. Diffusion coefficient analysis during heating of glass and crystal, indicates that the presence of defects on the glassy matrix favors the transition processes from the ionic to a superionic state, with high mobility of fluorine atoms, responsible for the high anionic conduction of lead fluoride. Nonisothermal and isothermal devitrification processes are simulated in glasses obtained at different cooling rates and structural organizations occurring during the heat treatments are clearly observed. When a fast cooling rate is employed during the glass formation, the devitrification of a single crystal (limited by the cell dimensions) is observed, while the glass obtained with slower cooling rate, allowing relaxations and organization of various regions on the glass bulk during the cooling process, devitrifies in more than one crystalline plane. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) are used to investigate molecular organization in Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of two kinds of lignins. The lignins were extracted from sugar cane bagasse using distinct extraction processes and are referred to here as ethanol lignin (EL) and saccharification lignin (SAC). AFM images show that LB films from EL have a flat surface in comparison with those from SAC. For the latter, ellipsoidal aggregates are seen oriented perpendicularly to the substrate. This result is confirmed by a combination of transmission and reflection FTIR measurements, which also point to lignin aggregates preferentially oriented perpendicularly to the substrate. For LB films from EL, on the other hand, aggregates are preferentially oriented parallel to the substrate, again consistent with the flat surface observed in AFM data. The vibrational spectroscopy data for cast films from both lignins show random molecular organization, as one should expect.

In this work we investigate the effect from the solution concentration on aggregation in layer-by-layer (LBL) films of poly(omethoxyaniline) (POMA) alternated with poly(vinyl sulfonic acid). Films are adsorbed on hydrophilized glass substrates and characterized with UV-Vis spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. The formation of aggregates is favored in more concentrated solutions, leading to an increase in the diameter of the domains. This is caused by stronger polymer-polymer interactions under high concentrations. The size of POMA aggregates in solution is estimated to be larger than in LBL films, which is surprising because one should expect aggregates from solution to coalesce into larger aggregates in the deposited films. This unexpected result may be explained by a swelling effect of aggregates in the aqueous POMA solutions, consistent with other reports in the literature which consider the aggregates in solution to be made up of smaller aggregates. Upon adsorption on a solid substrate to form the LBL film, a molecular reorganization probably takes place, resulting in smaller aggregates. It is also found that the size distribution of the POMA domains in the LBL films is determined by the concentration of the solution. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.
