Shiitake (Lentinula edodes (Berkeley) Pegler) is one of the most consumed mushrooms, for both therapeutic purposes and as food, therefore, the study of its biological properties is of great interest for producers and consumers. Aqueous extracts of the shiitake mushroom (L. edodes (Berkeley) Pegler) were evaluated by the micronucleus test (MN) in HEp-2 cells in vitro, to analyze their possible mutagenic and antimutagenic activities. None of the three extract concentrations tested (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mg/mL) presented mutagenicity at any of the preparation temperatures (4 degrees C, 22 +/- 2 degrees C and 60 degrees C). In the antimutagenicity evaluation, all extract concentrations at all preparation temperatures presented a strong protective activity for the HEp-2 cells in response to the alkylating agent methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) in the different treatment protocols: pre-treatment, simultaneous treatment and post-treatment. The extracts prepared at 22 +/- 2 degrees C presented the lowest frequencies of MN in the evaluations of mutagenicity and antimutagenicity, indicating these as the best option for potential therapeutic use. The need for low-chirp and compact transmitters for high-bit-rate optical links has led to the development of integrated laser electroabsorption modulators (ILM). We have investigated feedback effects inducing frequency chirp by developing a model treating the ILM as a whole and obtained analytical expressions of the FM and AM responses. The variation of the frequency chirp with the residual facet reflectivity of the modulator section is calculated. The model predicts the unusual peak in the measured frequency responses and has been used to define design rules.

OBJECTIVE: After acute myocardial infarction, during the cardiac repair phase, periostin is released into the infarct and activates signaling pathways that are essential for the reparative process. However, the role of periostin in chronic cardiac remodeling after myocardial infarction remains to be elucidated. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between tissue periostin and cardiac variables in the chronic cardiac remodeling induced by myocardial infarction. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were assigned to 2 groups: a simulated surgery group (SHAM; n = 8) and a myocardial infarction group (myocardial infarction; n = 13). After 3 months, morphological, functional and biochemical analyses were performed. The data are expressed as means±SD or medians (including the lower and upper quartiles). RESULTS: Myocardial infarctions induced increased left ventricular diastolic and systolic areas associated with a decreased fractional area change and a posterior wall shortening velocity. With regard to the extracellular matrix variables, the myocardial infarction group presented with higher values of periostin and types I and III collagen and higher interstitial collagen volume fractions and myocardial hydroxyproline concentrations. In addition, periostin was positively correlated with type III collagen levels (r = 0.673, p = 0.029) and diastolic (r = 0.678, p = 0.036) and systolic (r = 0.795, p = 0.006) left ventricular areas. Considering the relationship between periostin and the cardiac function variables, periostin was inversely correlated with both the fractional area change (r = -0.783, p = 0.008) and the posterior wall shortening velocity (r = -0.767, p = 0.012). CONCLUSIONS: Periostin might be a modulator of deleterious cardiac remodeling in the chronic phase after myocardial infarction in rats.

Endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR) involving renal and visceral arteries remains a great challenge. Several techniques have been developed over the time to treat juxtarenal, pararenal and thoracoabdominal aneurysms, highlighting the fenestrated and branched endografts, parallel prostheses as Chimney, Periscope and Sandwich Techniques and the use of flow modulation by multilayer stent. We report a case of saccular juxtarenal aortic aneurysm with high surgical risk for complex airway access due to a history of radical laryngectomy for laryngeal neoplasm. Due to chronic aorto-iliac obstructive disease, ostial stenosis of renal artery and limited diameter of the suprarenal aorta, we discarded options involving fenestrated/branched endografts and involving parallel prostheses techniques. We present this case as a therapeutic challenge and a successful treatment option in the short-term evaluation.

This study evaluated the effect of extract of Aloe vera in the transport water of matrinxã (Brycon amazonicus) fish on stress response and leukocyte respiratory activity. Fish was transported for 4 h in water containing Aloe at levels 0; 0.02; 0.2 and 2 mg/L, and sampled before transport 2, 4, 24 and 96 h after for determination of plasma glucose and respiratory activity of leukocytes. An additional in vitro assay was conducted with another fish species, pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus), to test the respiratory burst of leukocytes exposed to Aloe extract (0.0, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) only) at 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and 1 mg/L). Plasma glucose increased after 2 and 4 h of transport and returned to control levels within 24 h, but the addition of Aloe in the transport water did not affect the level of blood glucose. However, at 2 h of transport, Aloe enhanced the respiratory activity of leukocytes in a dose-dependent way. The highest value of respiratory burst activity of leukocytes was observed in the fish transported in water containing Aloe at 2 mg/L. The enhancing effect of the plant extract on the production of oxygen radicals was confirmed in vitro in leukocytes of pacu incubated in Aloe at concentrations 0.1 and 0.2 mg/L. The results suggest that Aloe vera is a modulator of the immune system in fish improving the innate immune response tested.

When the electro-optic and acousto-optic effects are combined into a single device, the resulting acousto-electro-optic (AEO) modulator shows improved flexibility to overcome some limitations of the individual modulators or their cascade combinations. By using optical interferometry, it is possible to investigate the AEO modulator behavior as a function of this applied voltage. By this way, a lithium niobate AEO modulator is positioned in one of the arms of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and operates at 62 MHz frequency, which constitutes the intermediate frequency of the heterodyne interferometer. Operating the AEO modulator in the acousto-optic small diffraction efficiency regime, the photodetected signal amplitude and phase are analyzed, and the induced phase shift, transmission curve and linearity response are obtained. The experimental results show good agreement with that expected from the coupled-mode theory. The possibility of linear control of the optical phase shift by the external voltage, from 0 to 2 p radians, is demonstrated.

Social support and infant malnutrition: a case-control study in an urban area of Southeastern Brazil
Resumo:
The relationship between malnutrition and social support was first suggested in the mid-1990s. Despite its plausibility, no empirical studies aimed at obtaining evidence of this association could be located. The goal of the present study was to investigate such evidence. A case-control study was carried out including 101 malnourished children (weight-for-age National Center for Health Statistics/WHO 5th percentile) aged 12-23 months, who were compared with 200 well-nourished children with regard to exposure to a series of factors related to their social support system. Univariate and multiple logistic regressions were carried out, odds ratios being adjusted for per capita family income, mother's schooling, and number of children. The presence of an interaction between income and social support variables was also tested. Absence of a partner living with the mother increased risk of malnutrition (odds ratio 2.4 (95 % CI 1.19, 4.89)), even after adjustment for per capita family income, mother's schooling, and number of children. The lack of economic support during adverse situations accounted for a very high risk of malnutrition (odds ratio 10.1 (95 % CI 3.48, 29.13)) among low-income children, but had no effect on children of higher-income families. Results indicate that receiving economic support is an efficient risk modulator for malnutrition among low-income children. In addition, it was shown that the absence of a partner living with the mother is an important risk factor for malnutrition, with an effect independent from per capita family income, mother's schooling, and number of children.

The 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)(1A) receptor system plays a prominent role in a variety of physiological functions and behavior and regulation of this responsiveness of the receptor system has been implicated in the central regulation of water intake and urinary excretion. The lateral septal area (LSA) exhibits a high density of 5-HT1A receptors, as well as a subpopulation of oxytocin (OT) receptors. Here we report the effects of pMPPF (a selective 5-HT1A antagonist), d(CH2)(5)[Tyr(Me)(2)Thr(4), Orn(5), Tyr(NH2)(9)]-vasotocin (an OT antagonist), and that 5-HT1A receptor system is regulated as a consequence of activation of the Na+ channel by veratridine. Cannulae were implanted into the LSA of rats to enable the introduction of the drugs. Injections of 8-OH-DPAT (a 5-HT1A agonist) blocked water intake and increased urinary excretion, while pMPPF or the OT antagonist injected bilaterally before 8-OH-DPAT blocked its inhibitory effect on water intake and its diuretic effect. In contrast, increases in extracellular sodium levels induced by the sodium channel modulator, veratridine, enhanced 5-HT1A responsiveness for water intake and reduced the diuretic effects induced by 8-OH-DPAT. These trials demonstrated that the responsiveness of the 5-HT1A receptor system in the LSA can be enhanced or depressed as a consequence of an induced rise in extracellular sodium. Ticks are bloodsucking ectoparasites that cause great damage to host organisms, so these ectoparasites are of great importance in medicine and veterinary medicine. All the biological success achieved by ticks is due to the action of bioactive components present in their saliva, which are synthesized by the salivary glands. These components have great diversity of functions such as enabling feeding and the permanence of ectoparasites on hosts, since they modulate immune system acting as complement inhibitors, immunosuppressors, cytokine expression modulator and chemokine binders of hosts. In addition, these components are an important source of protective antigens. In this sense, salivary glands/saliva are considered a potential source of multifunctional molecules. In this context, many studies have been conducted aiming at searching to establish a better understanding on the biology and morphophysiology of some organs such as salivary glands, as well as elucidate the complex relationship of these ectoparasites with their hosts. Such studies are conducted with the main objective of developing new immunobiological products aimed at the alternative control of ticks, as well as for the identification and isolation of bioactive molecules with pharmacological properties and with great therapeutic potential in the search for treatments for some diseases.

The circumventricular structures of the central nervous system and nitric oxide are involved in arterial blood pressure control, and general anesthesia may stimulate the central renin-angiotensin system. We therefore investigated the central role of angiotensin 11 and nitric oxide on the regulation of systemic arterial blood pressure in conscious and anesthetized rats. METHODS: Rats with stainless steel cannulae implanted into their lateral ventricle were studied. We injected the AT(1) and AT(2) angiotensin 11 receptor antagonists, losartan and PD123319, L-NAME, 7-nitroindazole (nitric oxide synthetase inhibitors), and FK409 (nitric oxide donor agent) into the lateral ventricles. Mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) was recorded in conscious and zoletil-anesthetized rats. RESULTS: Mean +/- (SEM) baseline MAP was 117.5 +/- 2 mm Hg. Angiotensin II injected into the brain lateral ventricle increased MAP from 136.5 +/- 2 min Hg to 138.5 +/- 4 mm Hg (Delta 16 +/- 3 mm Hg to Delta 21 +/- 3 mm Hg) for all experimental groups versus control from 116 +/- 2 mm Hg to 120 +/- 3 mm Hg (Delta 3 +/- 1 mm Hg to A5 +/- 2 mm Hg) (P < 0.05). L-NAME or 7-nitroindazole enhanced the angiotensin II pressor effect (P < 0.05). Prior injection of losartan and PD123319 decreased the angiotensin 11 pressor effect and the enhancement effect of L-NAME and 7-nitroindazole (P < 0.05). Zoletil anesthesia did not interfere with the effects of angiotensin 11, AT,, AT2 antagonists, or nitric oxide synthetase inhibitors. CONCLUSIONS: Endogenous nitric oxide functions tonically as a central inhibitory modulator of the angiotensinergic system. AT, and AT2 receptors influence the angiotensin 11 central control of arterial blood pressure. Zoletil anesthesia did not interfere with these effects. (Anesth Analg 2007;105:1293-7)
