Solid state M-L, where M stands for bivalent transition metals (Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II)) and L is mandelate, were synthesized. Simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry, elemental analysis and complexometry were used to establish the stoichiometry and to study the thermal behaviour of these compounds in CO2 and N2 atmospheres. The results show that all the compounds were obtained in the anhydrous state and in agreement with the general formula ML2. The thermal decomposition of the compounds occurs in a single (Cu(II)), two (Ni(II)) three (Fe(II), Co(II)), four (Mn(II)) and five (Zn(II)) steps. The results also provided information concerning the ligand's denticity, thermal behaviour, final residues and identification of gaseous products evolved during the thermal decomposition of these compounds. © 2012 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.

In this paper, synthesis, characterization and antimycobacterial properties of a new water-soluble complex identified as silver-mandelate are described. Elemental and thermal analyses are consistent with the formula [Ag(C6H5C(OH)COO)](n). The polymeric structure was determined by single X-ray diffraction and the two-dimensional structure is based on the bis(carboxylate-O,O') dimer [Ag-O, 2.237(3), 2.222(3) angstrom]. The structure is extended along both the b and c axes through two oxygen atoms of a bidentate alpha-hydroxyl-carboxylate residue [Ag-OH(hydroxyl), 2.477(3) angstrom; Ag-O(carboxylate), 2.502(3) angstrom; O-Ag-O, 63.94(9)degrees]. A strong d(10)-d(10) interaction was observed between two silver atoms. The Ag...Ag distance is 2.8307(15) angstrom. The NMR C-13 spectrum in D2O shows that coordination of the ligand to Ag(l) occurs through the carboxylate group in solution. Potentiometric titration shows that only species with a molar metaHigand ratio of 2:2 are formed in aqueous solution. The mandelate complex and the silver-glycolate, silver-malate and silver-hydrogen-tartarate complexes were tested against three types of mycobacteria, Mycobacterium avium, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium kansasii, and their minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were determined. The results show that the four complexes are potential candidates for antiseptic or disinfectant drugs for discharged secretions of patients affected with tuberculosis. The complexes (NH4)(2)[ MoO2( C2H2O3)(2)]center dot H2O, (NH4)(2)[MoO2(C8H6O3)(2)] and (NH4)(2) [MoO3(C4H4O6)]center dot H2O were prepared by reaction of MoO3 with glycolic, mandelic and tartaric acids, respectively. The complexes were characterized by elemental and thermal analysis, IR spectroscopy and X- ray diffraction. Crystals of the glycolate and tartarate complexes are orthorhombic and the mandelate complex is monoclinic. Elemental and thermal analysis data showed that the glycolate and tartarate complexes are monohydrated. Hydration water is not present in the structure of the mandelate complex. IR spectra showed COO- is involved in coordination as well as the oxygen atom of the deprotonated hydroxyl group of the alpha-carbon. The glycolate molybdenum complexes with general formula M-2[MoO2(C2H2O3)(2)]center dot nH(2)O, where M is an alkali metal and n=1 or 1/2, were also prepared and characterized. Aqueous solutions of the glycolate complex become blue and mandelate and tartarate complexes change to yellow or brown when exposed to UV- radiation.

Time differential measurements of the 133-482 keV γ-γ angular correlation of 181Ta have been performed in solid hafnium complexes of the type [Hf(glycol)4] (glycol = p-chloromandelate, p-bromomandelate, b-naphthylglycolate and mandelate). The quadrupolar frequencies (ωQ) were found to increase within the series. This behaviour was explained by supposing a dissipation of electronic density at the metal level, caused by an increase in intermolecular hydrogen bonding in the complexes throughout the series studied. These results seem to agree with complementary data from IR spectroscopic studies. © 1988.
