Reactions of Hg(CH3COO)(2) with [Fe(CO)(5)] in MeOH and EtOH lead to the compounds Hg[Fe(COOR)(CO)(4)](2) (I for R = CH3 and II for R = C2H5). Crystals of I are triclinic, P (1) over bar, with a = 6.272(2), b = 6.441(3), c = 11.703(4) Angstrom, a = 92.94(3)degrees, beta = 103.77(3)degrees, gamma = 96.10(2)degrees, and Z = 1. Crystals of II are tetragonal, I4(1)/a, with a = 17.906(3) Angstrom, c = 12.756(2) Angstrom, and Z = 8. The geometry around Hg is linear for compound I and approximately linear for compound II. The Hg-Fe distances are 2.5716(8) and 2.575(4) Angstrom for compounds I and II, respectively. The geometry around the Fe in both compounds is approximately octahedral. The carboalkoxy group is cis to Hg in both compounds with Fe-C distances equal to 2.034(6) and 2.05(4) Angstrom for compounds I and II, respectively.

The 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of carbon disulfide to the coordinated azide in the cyclometallated compound [Pd(dmba)(N-3)](2) (1), dmba = N,N-dimethylbenzylamine, was investigated. The compound obtained di(mu, N,S-1,2,3,4-thiatriazole-5-thiolate)-bis[(N,N-dimethylbenzylamine-C-2,N)palladium(II)] (2), was characterized by IR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Complex (2) is dimeric with the two [Pd(N,N-dimethylbenzylamine)] moieties being connected by the two vicinal bridging N,S-1,2,3,4-thiatriazole-5-thiolate anions in a square-planar coordination for the palladium atoms.

Ruthenium(II) complexes with general formula [RuCl3(NO)(P-P)] were obtained in the solid state, where P-P = PPh(2)(CH2)(n)PPh(2) (n = 1-3) and PPh(2)-CH = CH-PPh(2). The P-31 NMR spectra of these compounds measured in CH2Cl2 showed only singlets, consistent with a fac configuration containing two equivalent phosphorus atoms, However the X-ray diffraction data show that the [RuCl3(NO){PPh(2)(CH2)(3)PPh(2)}] complex crystallizes in a met configuration, where one of the phosphorus atoms is trans to the NO group, in a slightly distorted octahedral geometry. Thirty piglets, weaned at an average age of 28 days, were used in experiment one. After weaning, 24 animals were transferred to the nursery in groups of two to each pen and fed simple or semi-complex diets ad libitum. On weaning day (day 0), six pigs were slaughtered. On days 7 and 21 post-weaning, one animal from each nursery pen was slaughtered to study mucosal thickness (MTD and MTJ) and villi heights (VHD and VHJ) in the duodenum and jejunum. The average values observed for MTD, VHD, MTJ, and VHJ were not influenced by type of diet. MTD, MTJ, and VHJ increased from days 7 to 21 post-weaning. Polynomial regression spanning days 0, 7, and 21 showed a linear effect for MTJ and a quadratic effect for VHD and VHJ. In experiment two, 16 piglets weaned at an average age of 28 days were used in two metabolic trials carried out during two periods of the initial phase (days 5 to 14 and days 19 to 28 postweaning), to determine the nutritional value of simple and semi-complex diets. There were no differences among treatments in apparent digestibility of crude protein and dry matter and the values for digestible or metabolizable energy of the diets. It was concluded that composition of the starter diet did not influence the intestinal morphology of piglets, the digestibilities of dry matter and crude protein, or the digestible and metabolizable energy contents of the diets.

Given that cancer is one of the main causes of death worldwide, many efforts have been directed toward discovering new treatments and approaches to cure or control this group of diseases. Chemotherapy is the main treatment for cancer; however, a conventional schedule based on maximum tolerated dose (MTD) shows several side effects and frequently allows the development of drug resistance. On the other side, low dose chemotherapy involves antiangiogenic and immunomodulatory processes that help host to fight against tumor cells, with lower grade of side effects. In this review, we present evidence that metronomic chemotherapy, based on the frequent administration of low or intermediate doses of chemotherapeutics, can be better than or as efficient as MTD. Finally, we present some data indicating that noncytotoxic concentrations of antineoplastic agents are able to both up-regulate the immune system and increase the susceptibility of tumor cells to cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Taken together, data from the literature provides us with sufficient evidence that low concentrations of selected chemotherapeutic agents, rather than conventional high doses, should be evaluated in combination with immunotherapy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the superficial digital tenotomy and the superior check ligament desmotomy on the radio-metacarpal, metacarpophalangeal, proximal and distal interphalangeal angles in horses. Under general anesthesia the superficial digital flexor tenotomy and superior check ligament desmotomy were performed, respectively, on the right and left forelimbs in nine horses. Before surgery and on 15th, 30th, and 60th postoperative days the radio-metacarpal, metacarpophalangeal, and proximal and distal interphalangeal angles were measured by radiographic examination. Tenotomy decreased significantly the metacarpophalangeal angle (mean ± standard deviation: preoperative – 140.7º ± 6.85; 60th day – 128.2º ± 5.93) and increased the distal interphalangeal angle (mean ± standard deviation: preoperative – 172.6 ± 1.87; 60th day – 167.6 ± 1.36). Desmotomy decreased the proximal interphalangeal angle (mean ± standard deviation: preoperative – 180.2º ± 5.43; 60th day- 197.3º ± 8.29). These surgical procedures did not change the radio-metacarpal angle. The superficial digital flexor tenotomy and the superior check ligament desmotomy cause different and significant changes in joint angles distal to the carpus.
