The present research was accomplished under field and laboratory conditions (T= 25[plus or minus]2[degree] C, R.H.= 70[plus or minus] 10 % and fotoperiod= 12 horas) at FCA/UNICASTELO from Fernandopolis-SP, Brazil. The feeding preference of corn bug Leptoglossus zonatus Dallas, 1852 (Hemiptera: Coreidae) was evaluated on corn genotypes AL-Bianco, AL-Manduri, AL-25 Piratininga, AL-34 e AL-Manduri in the field. Besides, some behavioral factors relative to infestation and oviposition were observed. In laboratory, the nymph's development was evaluated on ears from each corn genotype, aiming to verify the non-preference and/or antibiosis ocurrence. The females of L. zonatus preferred to oviposite on sheats from leaves. Adults and nymphs may occur in whole parts of the plants. The AL-25, AL-34, AL-Manduri and AL-Bandeirante corn genotypes were classified as moderately resistant, expressing non-preference and/or antibiosis against the corn bug. In other way AL-Bianco was the most suscetible to nymphs of the insect.

Some cytogenetical aspects of spermatozoa formation were studied in 9 Coreidae Brazilian species: Anasa bellator, Athaumastus haematicus, Chariesterus armatus, Dallacoris obscura, Dallacoris pictus, Leptoglossus gonagra, Leptoglossus zonatus, Sphictyrtus fasciatus, and Zicca annulata. Similarly to the other species described to date, all the species studied herein showed cystic spermatogenesis, a reddish membrane covering the testes, a X0 sex determining system, a pair of m-chromosomes, intersticial chiasmata in most autosomes, and autosomes dividing reductionally at first meiotic division and equationally in the second 1 while sex chromosomes, divide equationally and reductionally at first and second meiotic division, respectively. In addition, it was observed that the sex chromosome is heteropycnotic at prophase and that heteropycnotic chromosomal material is found in the nuclei at spermiogenesis. In the species studied, the diploid chromosome number ranged from 19 to 25. It was 19 in S. fasciatus (16A+2m+X0); 21 in A. bellator, A. haematicus, D. obscura, D. pictus, L. gonagra, and L. zonatus (18A+2m+X0); 23 in Z. annulata (20A+2m+X0); and 25 in C. armatus (22A+2m+X0). © 2007 The Japan Mendel Society.

The speciose Brazilian Elateridae fauna is characterized by high karyotypic diversity, including one species (Chalcolepidius zonatus Eschscholtz, 1829) with the lowest diploid number within any Coleoptera order. Cytogenetic analysis of Conoderus dimidiatus Germar, 1839, C. scalaris (Germar, 1824,) C. ternarius Germar, 1839, and C. stigmosus Germar, 1839 by standard and differential staining was performed with the aim of establishing mechanisms of karyotypic differentiation in these species. Conoderus dimidiatus, C. scalaris, and C. ternarius have diploid numbers of 2n(male) = 17 and 2n(female) = 18, and a X0/XX sex determination system, similar to that encountered in the majority of Conoderini species. The karyotype of C. stigmosus was characterized by a diploid number of 2n=16 and a neoXY/neoXX sex determination system that was highly differentiated from other species of the genus. Some features of the mitotic and meiotic chromosomes suggest an autosome/ancestral X chromosome fusion as the cause of the neoXY system origin in C. stigmosus. C-banding and silver impregnation techniques showed that the four Conoderus species possess similar chromosomal characteristics to those registered in most Polyphaga species, including pericentromeric C band and autosomal NORs. Triple staining techniques including CMA(3)/DA/DAPI also provided useful information for differentiating these Conoderus species. These techniques revealed unique GC-rich heterochromatin associated with NORs in C. scalaris and C. stigmosus and CMA(3)-heteromorphism in C. scalaris and C. ternarius.

The present study aimed to cytogenetic analysis and structural and molecular level of four fish species of the genus Trichomycterus: T. diabolus, T. iheringi, T. zonatus and T. cf. mimonha collected in different river basins in Brazil. Techniques were used for classical cytogenetic (Giemsa, Silver nitrate impregnation, C-banding) and molecular with the chromosomal location of genes for 18S and 5S rDNA. All individuals examined had a diploid number 54 chromosomes and karyotype consisting of types of metacentric, submetacentric and subtelocentric. The constitutive heterochromatin identified by C-banding was observed in two small blocks in the karyotype of T. diabolus and large blocks of centromeric several pairs in chromosomal karyotypes of T. iheringi, T. zonatus and T. cf. mimonha. The Silver nitrate impregnation and hybridization with 18S rDNA probe revealed the existence of only a couple carryng nucleolar organizing regions (NORs) on the species T. diabolus, T. iheringi and T. cf mimonha, and two pairs carrying 18S rDNA in T. zonatus. The 5S rDNA was observed in interstitial position 6 of the pair in T. iheringi, the synteny with the two pair in 18S rDNA of T.diabolus in pericentromeric position of and two pairs submetacentric, one being also a case of synteny with the 18S rDNA in T. zonatus and T. cf. mimonha, this rDNA was located in the pairs 3, 18 and 25, and synteny in the 18S rDNA pair 18. Although representatives of these four species Trichomycterus present diploid number and karyotypic formula preserved, three is specific about the distribuition patterns of heterochromatin and location of rDNA sequences, indicating that chromosomal differentiation events in this group of fish are acting directly on these genomic portions
