Grinding is a parts finishing process for advanced products and surfaces. However, continuous friction between the workpiece and the grinding wheel causes the latter to lose its sharpness, thus impairing the grinding results. This is when the dressing process is required, which consists of sharpening the worn grains of the grinding wheel. The dressing conditions strongly affect the performance of the grinding operation; hence, monitoring them throughout the process can increase its efficiency. The objective of this study was to estimate the wear of a single-point dresser using intelligent systems whose inputs were obtained by the digital processing of acoustic emission signals. Two intelligent systems, the multilayer perceptron and the Kohonen neural network, were compared in terms of their classifying ability. The harmonic content of the acoustic emission signal was found to be influenced by the condition of dresser, and when used to feed the neural networks it is possible to classify the condition of the tool under study.

The goal of this work is to assess the efficacy of texture measures for estimating levels of crowd densities ill images. This estimation is crucial for the problem of crowd monitoring. and control. The assessment is carried out oil a set of nearly 300 real images captured from Liverpool Street Train Station. London, UK using texture measures extracted from the images through the following four different methods: gray level dependence matrices, straight lille segments. Fourier analysis. and fractal dimensions. The estimations of dowel densities are given in terms of the classification of the input images ill five classes of densities (very low, low. moderate. high and very high). Three types of classifiers are used: neural (implemented according to the Kohonen model). Bayesian. and an approach based on fitting functions. The results obtained by these three classifiers. using the four texture measures. allowed the conclusion that, for the problem of crowd density estimation. texture analysis is very effective.

Protein is one of the limiting factors in animal production, and the knowledge of protein requirements by livestock is crucial for the success of a commercial animal raising enterprise. Thirty-four castrated lambs, 17 of them F1 Ideal x lie de France wool lambs and the remaining ones were Santa Ines hair lambs, with homogeneous initial BW, were used in the experiment. Five animals from each genotype were slaughtered in the beginning of the experimental period and used as reference. Diets (D) were composed of concentrate mix (C) and Cynodon sp. c.v. Tifton 85 hay (R), combined in three different ratios: D1 =60CAOR; D2=40C:60R and D3=20C:80R. Animals of each group of three lambs, that showed simultaneously an initial BW of 20 +/- 0.14 kg at the beginning of the dietary regimen, were slaughtered when one of them reached 35 kg, what always happened to be the one fed with D1. Net requirements for BW gain in wool lamb, fleece-free, ranged from 101 to 110 g of protein/kg BW, and for hair lamb ranged from 1 10 to 118 g of protein/kg BW. Net protein requirements for wool production ranged from 634 to 642 g/kg of produced wool. Hair lambs presented a 7.8-9.5% higher estimated net protein requirements than wool lambs, according to BW and daily weight gain (DG). Total net protein requirements for Santa Ines and wool lambs, with 30 kg of initial B W and an approximate 200 g mean DG, were 48.5 and 45.4 g/day, respectively. Metabolizable protein requirements for Santa Ines and wool lambs, with 20 kg of initial BW and an approximate 200 g mean DG were 59.4 g and 76.5 -/day, respectively. Net protein requirements for wool production was 64g/100g of produced wool. Thus, under the conditions of this experiment, it is concluded that hair lambs showed a higher concentration of protein in the body, more efficient use of the ingested protein and a consequent additional BW gain when fed isoproteic diets as compared to F1 Ideal x Ile de France wool lambs. The objective of this work was to evaluate the total endogenous N losses, and protein and energy net requirements for maintenance in growing lambs. Thirty-four castrated lambs, 17 F1 Ideal X Ile de France wool and 17 Santa Inas hair lambs, averaging 20 +/- 0.14 kg BW, were used in the experiment. Five animals from each genotype were slaughtered at the beginning of the experiment and taken as controls. Diets (D) were composed of concentrate mix (C) and Cynodon sp. c.v. Tifton 85 hay (R), combined in three different ratios: D1 = 60C:40R; D2 = 40C:60R and D3 = 20C:80R. Animals of each group of three lambs, that showed BW of 20 kg at the beginning of the dietary regimen, were slaughtered when one of them reached 35 kg, what always happened to be the one fed with D1. Total endogenous N losses estimated for wool lambs were 250 mg N/kg BW0.75. For hair lambs, total endogenous N losses reached 324 mg N/kg BW0.75 . Hair lambs showed higher (P < 0.01) (29.9%) net requirements of protein for maintenance than wool lambs. In contrast, net energy (NE) requirement for maintenance was similar (P > 0.05) for both genotypes (74.27 kcal/kg BW0.75 per day), the average of the antilog of the two intercept values obtained from the estimated regression equations of heat production for zero metabolizable energy (ME) consumption. Further studies should be done to check if this trend is also true for metabolizable energy and protein in animals exhibiting BW gains in tropical region. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. B.V. In order to determine the net energy, protein and macrominerals requirements of 70 to 120 day old, 52 female White New Zealand rabbits, weighing 1900g +/- 40g were used. At the beginning of the experimental period, 14 of the 52 young does were slaughtered and the 38 remaining animals were kept under two dietary management: ad libitum and restricted feeding. Slaughters were performed to determine each nutrient body content. The weight gain nutrient requirements depicted by the quantities of each nutrient stored into the body were obtained by applying the regression equation, which estimate the empty body nutrient content logarithm as a function of the empty body weight logarithm, as described by ARC (1980). By determining the heat production logarithm at the zero level of metabolizable energy intake, the maintenance net energy requirement was estimated to be 45.31 Kcal/day/Kg(0.75) the mean net energy. protein, calcium, phosphorous, sodium, magnesium and potassium requirements for each gram of weight gain per day were estimated to be, 2.51 Kcal, 0.21g, 0.02g, 0.005g, 0.001g, 0.0004g and 0.002g, respectively.

This paper presents a technique for oriented texture classification which is based on the Hough transform and Kohonen's neural network model. In this technique, oriented texture features are extracted from the Hough space by means of two distinct strategies. While the first operates on a non-uniformly sampled Hough space, the second concentrates on the peaks produced in the Hough space. The described technique gives good results for the classification of oriented textures, a common phenomenon in nature underlying an important class of images. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the performance of the new technique in comparison, with an implemented technique based on Gabor filters.

Growth effects of cultivation on soil, sand and commercial substrate, on summer and winter time, of 'Bonus #2', 'Don Carlo's and 'Hy Mark' were assessed. The experiments were conducted in a greenhouse of FCAV-UNESP, in Jaboticabal- SP, Brazil, 21° 15' 22 S, 48° 18'58 W, and an altitude of 595 m, comprising the period from November '99 to April 2000 (Summer), and from July to November 2000 (Winter). On soil cultivation, chemical nutrients were used, and the plants received drip irrigation. On sand, fertigation with recirculation of the nutrient solution were used, and slabs and fertigation with non circulating nutrient solution was used with commercial substrate. 'Bonus #2', grown on sand and in the summer season had improved plant height, internodes length, stem diameter, leaf area and dry matter of shoots and roots. 'Hy Mark', when cultivated on commercial substrate had lower growth. During winter season, the growth was slower.

In order to access the effects of cultivation in soil, sand or a commercial substrate on the productivity of Bonus #2 cultivars, 'Don Carlos' and 'Hy Mark', two experiments were conducted in the greenhouse at FCAV-UNESP, Jaboticabal- SP, Brazil, 21° 15' 22 S, 48° 18'58 W, and altitude of 595 m, from November 1999 to April 2000 (summer), and from July to November 2000 (Winter). For cultivation in soil, chemical nutrients were added, and plants were irrigated with drip irrigation. Fertigation with recirculation of the nutrient solution was used on sand; slabs were used on commercial substrate with the fertigation with non circulating nutrient solution. Bonus #2 cultivar yielded the highest production of marketable fruit, but were later in production, while Hy Mark cultivar had early production but a lower number of fruit per plant. The winter planting yielded higher production of marketable fruit while summer plantings yielded lower number of fruit per plant, but with higher average weigh. The combination between cultivation systems and cultivars yielded higher fruit production in winter.

The behavior of two hybrids of muskmelon ('Bônus no 2' and 'Don Carlos') in relation to the productivity and quality of its fruits, making use of fertigation in sand substrate in protected environment, was studied. Amianthus cement structures of the Canalete runlet type were used to keep the plants 0.30m from each other and 1.0m between lines. 'Don Carlos' hybrid had fruit mean weight, longitudinal and transversal diameter, pulp mean thickness, and total acidity substantially superior in relation to 'Bônus no 2'. Considering the total soluble solid content, 'Bônus no 2' had better results. However, there was no significant difference in fruits/plant or pulp thickness between the two hybrids.
