Aquatic macroinvertebrates survey and assessment of two artificial reservoirs into conservation units from the Southeast Region of Brazil

This study aims to inventory and assess the aquatic macroinvertebrates fauna in two artificial reservoirs into conservation units with differences regarding conservation level and to anthropogenic impacts. The samplings were carried out in Caetetus Ecological Station and Bauru City Zoological Park, where some physical and chemical variables also were measured. The results obtained indicated that the Caetetus Ecological Station is more effective in the conservation of the diversity of aquatic macroinvertebrates compared to Bauru City Zoological Park. These results can be attributed to the strong anthropogenic impact suffered by the reservoir in Bauru and demonstrate the importance of these areas in maintaining the diversity of aquatic macroinvertebrates community.

Environmental effect on the occurrence of anti-Neospora caninum antibodies in pampas-deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus)

Sera obtained from pampas-deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus) captured in two different Brazilian environments were analyzed for the presence of anti-Neospora caninum antibodies by the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Samples were collected from 23 animals from a savanna area in the National Park of Emas, in the state of Goias, Brazil. This area is surrounded by cultivated lands and allows very little contact between wild and domestic animals. Another batch of samples was collected from 16 animals from the Pantanal region, in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. This area is a flood plain where domestic animals have intensive contact with cervids. The 39 samples were analyzed (IFAT >= 1:50), and the values for the occurrences found in the animals from each region were compared by the test for comparison of two proportions. of the 39 cervids examined, 38.46% (15) had anti-N. caninum antibodies. Three (13%) of the 23 samples from the National Park of Emas. and 12 (75%) of the 16 samples from the Pantanal were positive, with significant differences between regions (p < 0.001). These results suggested that the presence of domestic animals, mainly dogs and cattle, may be responsible for the greater occurrence of N. caninum in the Pantanal cervids.Thus, as a recommendation of the Conservation Units that care for the pampas-deer, attention should be taken to carefully monitor the flow of diseases between the domestic animals and this species. Impact of Road Clearings on the Movements of Three Understory Insectivorous Bird Species in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

Rhodophyta de ambientes lóticos de unidades de conservação da região sul do Brasil

Species of Rhodophyta from 10 Conservation Units from the south region of Brazil were surveyed. The samplings were carried out in 105 stream reaches, consisting of 10 m length transects. The floristic survey involved 80 populations, representing three genera, Batrachospermum, Kumanoa and Hildenbrandia plus the 'Chantransia' stages. Batrachospermum was represented by five species (B. arcuatum Kylin, B. atrum (Hudson) Harvey, B. helminthosum Bory, B. keratophytum Bory and B. puiggarianum Grunow in Wittrock & Nordstedt). The genus Kumanoa was represented by K. abilii (Reis) Necchi Junior & Vis and K. ambigua (Montagne) Entwisle et al., while Hildenbrandia only by H. angolensis W.West & G.S.West. Our results confirm Batachospermum as the best represented genus, in terms of species number, among freshwater Rhdophyta. B. arcuatum was a new record for the south region of Brazil, thus extending its austral distribution range.
