Four perylene derivatives (PTCD) have been used as transducing materials in taste sensors fabricated with nanostructured Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films deposited onto interdigitated gold electrodes. The Langmuir monolayers of PTCDs display considerable collapse pressures, with areas per molecule indicative of an edge-on or head-on arrangement for the molecules at the air/water interface. The sensing units for the electronic tongue were produced from 5-layer LB films of the four PTCDs, whose electrical response was characterized with impedance spectroscopy. The distinct responses of the PTCDs, attributed to differences in their molecular structures, allowed one to obtain a finger printing system that was able to distinguish tastes (salty, sweet, bitter and sour) at 1 μM concentrations, which, in some cases, are three orders of magnitude below the human threshold. Using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) data analysis, the electronic tongue also detected trace amounts of a pesticide and could distinguish among samples of ultrapure, distilled and tap water, and two brands of mineral water. © 2004 by American Scientific Publishers. The phase formation mechanism, as well as the morphotropic phase boundary, of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) processed by a partial oxalate method was investigated by simultaneous thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and by qualitative and quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results show that the ZrxTi1-xO2 (ZT) phase reacts with PbO forming the PZT phase without intermediate phases. XRD analysis showed the coexistence of rhombohedral and tetragonal phases for 0.47 ≤ x ≤ 0.55 with the phase boundary composition for x = 0.51. For low calcination temperatures, preferential formation of the PZT rhombohedral phase was observed. A model for phase formation of PZT by the partial oxalate method is proposed based on the existence of two interfaces of reaction (PbO-PZT and PZT-ZT) and diffusion of cations.

0.7125ZrF4-0.2375(1 - xLaF3 • xLnF3)-0.05AIF3 with x = 0.01, 0.02 and 0.03 for Ln = Er and x = 0.03 for Ln = Pr, Nd glasses were studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction and optical spectroscopy. Avrami parameters (Ec and n) were obtained from DTA curves. With La3+ substitution a decrease in the stability against crystallization was observed. This decrease follows the order Er3+ > Nd3+ ≈ Pr3+ for 3% molar substitution. n values suggest an interface controlled growth mechanism with grain edge nucleation abler saturation. Two crystalline polymorphs of the LaZr3F15 phase were identified. With the substitution of 3 mol% of Pr3+, Nd3+ or Er3+ for La3+ only the crystallization of the rhombohedral α-LnZr3F15 phase was observed. An increase in Ω6 Judd's intensity parameter occurs with crystallization and also an increase in the 1.04 μm peak emission cross-section for Nd3+ 4I3/2 state suggesting the potential application of these glass ceramics in optical amplification devices. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

An alternative formulation for guided electromagnetic fields in grounded chiral slabs is presented. This formulation is formally equivalent to the double Fourier transform method used by the authors to calculate the spectral fields in open chirostrip structures. In this paper, we have addressed the behavior of the electromagnetic fields in the vicinity of the ground plane and at the interface between the chiral substrate and the free space region. It was found that the boundary conditions for the magnetic field, valid for achiral media, are not completely satisfied when we deal with chiral material. Effects of chirality on electromagnetic field distributions and on surface wave dispersion curves were also analyzed.

Coated purpose of homogeneous distribution as a second phase is introduced in magnetic systems. Yttrium iron garnet (YIG) shows special interest as magnetic dye, microwave absorber, and magnetic fluids when heterocoagulated by other material. Surface and interface magnetic properties are intimately connected with the new properties of the silica on YIG system. Néel first introduced the concept of surface anisotropy, and Chen et al. developed a model that describes the anisotropy effects at the boundary surface particle, which was applied in this work. Spherical YIG particles were prepared by coprecipitation method and coated with silica using the tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) hydrolysis process. The silica-YIG boundary was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Hysteresis loops comparatively show the profile of the naked and silica-covered YIG particles. The surface anisotropies were calculated using the Chen et al. approach. Indeed, in heterocoagulation systems, the surface anisotropy is a result of the interface symmetry breaking, as observed.

The morphologies of nylon 6/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene blends compatibilized with a methyl methacrylate/maleic anhydride copolymer, with 3-20 wt % maleic anhydride, were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Some staining techniques were employed for identifying the various phases. The binary blends were immiscible and exhibited poor mechanical properties that stemmed from the unfavorable interactions among their molecular segments. This produced an unstable and coarse phase morphology and weak interfaces among the phases in the solid state. The presence of the copolymer in the blends clearly led to a more efficient dispersion of the acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene phase and consequently optimized Izod impact properties. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Nylon6 is an attractive polymer for engineering applications because it has reactive functionality through amine and carboxyl end groups that are capable of reacting. For this reason, it has been used a lot in polymeric blends. Blends of nylon6/ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) were produced using glycidyl methacrylate-methyl methacrylate (GMA-MMA) copolymers as compatibilizer. The binary blends were immiscible and exhibited poor mechanical properties that stemmed from the unfavorable interactions among their molecular segments. This produced an unstable coarse phase morphology and weak interfaces between the phases in the solid state. The presence of the copolymer in the blends clearly led to a more efficient dispersion of the ABS phase and consequently optimized Izod impact properties. However, the compatibilized blend showed poor toughness at room temperature and failed in a brittle manner at subambient temperatures. © 2005 Springer Science + Business Media, Inc.

Prosthetic substructures for dental application are veneered by porcelain comprising a structure with different elastic modulus and thermal expansion coefficients layers. This structure may present residual stresses in different layers leading to crack propagation and delamination. Although veneering porcelain remains basically on same strength than standard feldspathic porcelains, new ceramic cores have been developed with higher mechanical properties overcoming metal substructures, improving esthetics and biocompatibility. The interface between the Procera dense sintered alumina core and the manufacturer recommended veneering porcelain (AllCeram-Degussa) were evaluated using SEM in coping shaped specimen simulating the standard dental preparation. There were neither crack presences at the interface nor porcelain delamination.

A general technique to embed non-uniform displacement discontinuities into standard solid finite elements is presented. The technique is based on the decomposition of the kinematic fields into a component related to the deformation of the solid portion of the element and one related to the rigid-body motion due to a displacement discontinuity. This decomposition simplifies the incorporation of discontinuity interfaces and provides a suitable framework to account for non-uniform discontinuity modes. The present publication addresses two families of finite element formulations: displacement-based and stress hybrid finite element. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Lead zirconate titanate Pb(Zr 0.50Ti 0.50)O 3 (PZT) thin films were deposited by a polymeric chemical method on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates to understand the mechanisms of phase transformations and the effect of film thickness on the structure, dielectric and piezoelectric properties in these films. PZT films pyrolyzed at temperatures higher than 350 °C present a coexistence of pyrochlore and perovskite phases, while only perovskite phase grows in films pyrolyzed at temperatures lower than 300 °C. For pyrochlore-free PZT thin films, a small (100) orientation tendency near the film-substrate interface was observed. Finally, we demonstrate the existence of a self-polarization effect in the studied PZT thin films. Results suggest that Schottky barriers and/or mechanical coupling near the filmsubstrate interface are not primarily responsible for the observed self-polarization effect in our films. © 2012 IEEE.

Thin films of tin dioxide (SnO2) are deposited by the sol-gel-dip-coating technique, along with GaAs layers, deposited by the resistive evaporation technique. The as-built heterojunction has potential application in optoelectronic devices, combining the emission from the rare-earth doped transparent oxide (Eu3+-doped SnO2 presents very efficient red emission) with a high mobility semiconductor. The advantage of this structure is the possibility of separation of the rare-earth emission centers from the electron scattering, leading to a strongly indicated combination for electroluminescence. Electrical characterization of the heterojunction SnO2:Eu/GaAs shows a significant conductivity increase when compared to the conductivity of the individual films, and the monochromatic light irradiation (266 nm) at low temperature of the heterojunction GaAs/SnO2:Eu leads to intense conductivity increase. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the heterojunction cross section shows high adherence and good morphological quality of the interfaces substrate/SnO2 and SnO2/GaAs, even though the atomic force microscopy (AFM) image of the GaAs surface shows disordered particles, which increases with sample thickness. On the other hand, the good morphology of the SnO2:Eu surface, shown by AFM, assures the good electrical performance of the heterojunction. The observed improvement on the electrical transport properties is probably related to the formation of short conduction channels at the semiconductors interface, which may exhibit two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) behavior. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. The multiferroic behavior with ion modification using rare-earth cations on crystal structures, along with the insulating properties of BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films was investigated using piezoresponse force microscopy. Rare-earth-substituted BFO films with chemical compositions of (Bi 1.00-xRExFe1.00O3 (x=0; 0.15), RE=La and Nd were fabricated on Pt (111)/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates using a chemical solution deposition technique. A crystalline phase of tetragonal BFO was obtained by heat treatment in ambient atmosphere at 500 °C for 2 h. Ion modification using La3+ and Nd3+ cations lowered the leakage current density of the BFO films at room temperature from approximately 10-6 down to 10-8 A/cm2. The observed improved magnetism of the Nd3+ substituted BFO thin films can be related to the plate-like morphology in a nanometer scale. We observed that various types of domain behavior such as 71° and 180° domain switching, and pinned domain formation occurred. The maximum magnetoelectric coefficient in the longitudinal direction was close to 12 V/cm Oe. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.
