The product development field daily works in the chase of new materials and technologies that fulfills the requirements of the consumer market. So, projects are developed in order to theoretically predict what will actually happen. The production of household appliance is not different. To provide a pleasant bath to the costumer, the manufacture of a bathtub counts on many components. With this in mind, this work goal is to study the possibility of production by plastic injection of the assembly water source/overflow pipe used in bathtubs and compare its production cost with the cost of the assembly acquired from third parties. The injection process is widely used on the world stage because of its numerous advantages, however, due to the high cost of the molds, it is important to estimate the time required for the return of the initial investment. To do this, a model was designed to examine its dimensions and then initiate the study of the possibility to inject the components with the available injection machine and the production cycle. With the results, it was found that there was a reduction in the cost of the finished assembly, but a very long time to return the initial investment due to the current financial scenery of the country

The demand by high performance materials that have to support severe service conditions at a reasonable cost has been forcing the powder metallurgy to improve constantly. The most recent and more important innovation in the area is the process of powder injection.Powder injection molding (PIM) is a technology capable of producing a new range of components from powders. This advanced technology overcomes the existent limitations in the forming of products with complex geometry. The process presents countless variations which are used in the industry today. Invariably, it consists of mixing the powders and a thermo-plastic binder, injecting the mass in the mold in the wanted form, debinding, sintering and making optional secondary operations, as for example, machinery. The purpose of this work is to review the metal injection molding techniques and apply the low pressure injection molding process to family of parts using metallic powder with 10 mum particle size. This work also comments the design and construction of a low pressure injection machine and injection molds. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.
Effect of ion concentration of ionomer in electron injection layer of polymer light-emitting devices
Resumo:
Polymer light-emitting devices (PLEDs) with poly(2-methoxy-5-hexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene (OC1OC6-PPV) as the emissive layer were studied with an electron injection layer of ionomers consisting of copolymers of styrene and methylmethacrylate (PS/PMMA) with 3, 6 and 8 mol% degree of sulfonation. The ionomers were able to form very thin films over the emissive layer, with less than 30 nm. Additionally, the presence of ion pairs of ionomer suppresses the tendency toward dewetting of the thin film of ionomer (similar to 10 nm) which can cause malfunction of the device. The effect of the ionomers was investigated as a function of the ion content. The devices performance, characterized by their current density and luminance intensity versus voltage, showed a remarkable increase with the ionomer layer up to 6 mol% of ionic groups, decreasing after that for the 8 mol% ionomer device. The study of the impedance spectroscopy in the frequency range from 0.1 to 10(6) Hz showed that the injection phenomena dominate over the transport in the electroluminescent polymer bulk. A reversible intermittent pow-injection procedure is proposed for the automated determination of mercury in sediments and vinasses by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry, CVAAS. Solutions of sample and stannous chloride are carried by two air streams and sequentially injected into the generator/separator chamber in a segmented asynchronous merging zone configuration. The intermittent flow in the forward direction carries the mercury vapor through the flow cell, and in the backward direction, if aspirates the the remaining solution from the vessel to waste. We investigated composition and concentration of reagents, pow rates, commutation times, reactor configuration, and conditions for mercury release. The accuracy was checked by mercury determination in a certified sediment and spiked vinasses and river waters. The system handles about 100 samples per hour (0.50-5.00 mu g L-1), consuming ca. 2.5 mL of sample and 50 mg of SnCl2 per determination; Good recoveries (92-103%) were obtained with spiked samples. Results are precise (RSD <3% for 2.5 mu g Hg L-1, n = 12) and in agreement with values for certified reference material at 95% confidence level. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A flow-injection system is proposed for the spectrophotometric determination of sulphite in white wines. The method involves analyte conversion to SO2, gas diffusion through a Teflon® semi-permeable membrane, collection into an alkaline stream (pH 8), reaction with Malachite green (MG) and monitoring at 620 nm. With a concentric tubular membrane, the system design was simplified. Influence of reagent concentrations, pH of donor and acceptor streams, temperature, timing, surfactant addition and presence of potential interfering species of the wine matrix were investigated. A pronounced (ca. 100%) enhancement in sensitivity was noted by adding cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC). The proposed system is robust and baseline drift is not observed during 4 h operating periods. Only 400 μL of sample and 0.32 mg MG are required per determination. The system handles 30 samples per hour, yielding precise results (r.s.d. < 0.015 for 1.0 - 20.0 mg L-1 SO2) in agreement with those obtained by an alternative procedure.
Aplicação de redes NeuroFuzzy ao processamento de peças automotivas por meio de injeção de polímeros
Resumo:
The injection molding of automotive parts is a complex process due to the many non-linear and multivariable phenomena that occur simultaneously. Commercial software applications exist for modeling the parameters of polymer injection but can be prohibitively expensive. It is possible to identify these parameters analytically, but applying classical theories of transport phenomena requires accurate information about the injection machine, product geometry, and process parameters. However, neurofuzzy networks, which achieve a synergy by combining the learning capabilities of an artificial neural network with a fuzzy set's inference mechanism, have shown success in this field. The purpose of this paper was to use a multilayer perceptron artificial neural network and a radial basis function artificial neural network combined with fuzzy sets to produce an inference mechanism that could predict injection mold cycle times. The results confirmed neurofuzzy networks as an effective alternative to solving such problems.

The aim of this work is to study the replacement of currently used thermoplastics by composites reinforced with vegetable fibers with several advantages, mainly better mechanical properties, low weight and competitive cost compared to its counterparts. Extrusion and injection molding processes were studied using polypropylene (PP) matrix. The raw materials used were sugar cane bagasse, elephant grass, wood, milk cartons and recycled polypropylene. The composites were tested for bending, tension, hardness and impact resistance, following ASTM standards. The results obtained were extremely positive since they proved that natural fibers as reinforcement can be an important alternative to replace talc and other fillers.

Statement of problem. A clinically significant incisal pin opening may occur after processing complete dentures if a compression molding technique is used. To recover the proper vertical dimension of occlusion, a time-consuming occlusal adjustment is necessary that often destroys the anatomy of the artificial teeth. A new injection molding process claims to produce dentures that require few, if any, occlusal adjustments in the laboratory after processing.Purpose. This laboratory study compared incisal pin opening, dimensional accuracy, and laboratory working time for dentures fabricated by this new injection system with dentures constructed by the conventional compression molding technique.Material and methods. Two groups of 6 maxillary and 6 mandibular dentures were evaluated as follows: group 1 (control), Lucitone 199, compression molded with a long cure cycle; and group 2, Lucitone 199, injection molded with a long cure. Incisal pin opening was measured with a micrometer immediately after deflasking. A computerized coordinate measuring machine was used to measure dimensional accuracy of 3-dimensional variations in selected positions of artificial teeth in 4 stages of denture fabrication. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and t tests were performed to compare the groups.Results. A significant difference was found in pin opening between groups (t test). Horizontal dimensional changes evaluated with repeated measures ANOVA revealed no significant differences between groups. However, analysis of vertical dimensional changes disclosed significant differences between the groups. There was no appreciable difference in laboratory working time for flasking and molding denture bases between the injection and compression molding techniques when polymethyl methacrylate resin was used.Conclusion. The injection molding method produced a significantly smaller incisal pin opening over the standard compression molding technique. The injection molding technique, using polymethyl methacrylate, was a more accurate method for processing dentures. There were no appreciable differences in laboratory working time between the injection and compression molding techniques.

PURPOSE. To compare the effectiveness of posterior sub-Tenon's infusion (STi) and intravitreal injection (IVI) of triamcinolone acetonide (TA) for treatment of refractory diffuse diabetic macular edema.METHODS. Thirty-six phakic diabetic patients with refractory diffuse diabetic macular edema were prospectively enrolled. Patients randomly received either 40 mg STi or 4 mg IVI of TA. Comprehensive ophthalmic evaluation was performed at baseline and 1, 2, 4, 8 +/- 1, 12 +/- 2 and 24 +/- 2 weeks after treatment. Macular morphologic changes detected by optical coherence tomography and visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and lens status were evaluated.RESULTS. Twenty-eight patients (28 eyes) completed the 24-week study. Central macular thickness was significantly reduced in the IVI group when compared with the STi group at 2, 4, 8, 12, and 24 weeks after treatment (P < 0.01). Mean visual acuities (in logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution [logMAR]) at week-4, -8, and -12 follow-up examinations were significantly higher in the IVI group (0.74, 0.75, and 0.82, respectively) when compared with the STi group (0.88, 0.88, and 0.90, respectively; P < 0.01). A significant change from baseline in mean intraocular pressure (mm Hg) was seen at weeks 4 (+/- 3.21) and 8 (+/- 3.35) in STi the group (P < 0.01), and at week 8 (+/- 2.78) in the IVI group (P < 0.05). No patient had cataract progression during the study.CONCLUSIONS. Although the number of patients and length of follow-up in this preliminary study were limited, the changes in central macular thickness and visual acuity observed after treatment suggest that IVI TA may be more effective than STi for the management of refractory diffuse diabetic macular edema. Further studies are needed to confirm these preliminary findings.
Flow injection amperometric detection of ascorbic acid using a Prussian Blue film-modified electrode
Resumo:
The PB film-modified electrode was used as an amperometric detector for flow injection analysis of ascorbic acid. The modified electrode detector showed good sensitivity, stability and reproducibility. The calibration curve for ascorbic acid was linear over the concentration range from 5.0 x 10(-6) to 1.0 x 10(-3) mol l(-1) with a slope of 19.9 mA mol(-1) per litre and a correlation coefficient of 0.999. The detection limit of this method was 2.49 x 10(-6) mol l(-1). The relative standard deviation of six replicate injections of 2.5 x 10(-4) mol l(-1) ascorbic acid was 2.5%. The results obtained for ascorbic acid determination in pharmaceutical products are in good agreement with those obtained by using the procedure involving the reaction between triiodide and ascorbic acid. The morphological, mechanical and rheological properties of nylon 6/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene blends compatibilized with MMA-MA [poly(methyl methacrylate-comaleic anhydride)] copolymers were studied. A twin screw extruder was used for melt-blended the polymers and the injection moulding process was used to mold the samples. The main focus was on nylon 6/ ABS blends compatibilized with one MMA-MA copolymer. This copolymer has PMMA segments that appear to be miscible with the styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) phase of ABS and the anhydride groups can react with amine end groups of the nylon 6 (Ny6) to form graft copolymers at the interface between Ny6 and ABS rich phases. Tensile and impact and morphological properties were enhanced by the incorporation of this copolymer. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations revealed that the ABS domains are finely dispersed in nylon 6 matrix and led to the lowest ductile-brittle transition temperatures and highest impact properties. It can be concluded that the MMA-MA copolymer is an efficient alternative for the reactive compatibilization and can be used as a compatibilizer for nylon 6/ABS blends.© 2003 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

This research work develops new methods to produce biodegradable starch-based trays for the purpose of replacing expanded polystyrene in the food packaging market. The starch based biopolymers present several drawbacks like poor mechanical properties and very high density. In order to overcome these drawbacks two research lines have been set up: blending thermoplastic starch with biobased reinforcements from agricultural wastes like barley straw and grape wastes, and testing the foamability of these materials with a Microwave-foaming method.
