In this paper, an experimental set-up which differs from the traditional ones is established in order to determine the moment of inertia of a right circular cone. Its angular variation and inertia ellipsoid are determined by means of an experimental study. In addition, a system that allows for the evaluation of the angular acceleration and torque through electric current or frequency measurement is utilized.

In this work, we describe an experimental setup in which an electric current is used to determine the angular velocity attained by a plate rotating around a shaft in response to a torque applied for a given period. Based on this information, we show how the moment of inertia of a plate can be determined using a procedure that differs considerably from the ones most commonly used, which generally involve time measurements. Some experimental results are also presented which allow one to determine parameters such as the exponents and constant of the conventional equation of a plate's moment of inertia.

Ovigerous females of Ucides cordatus were collected at different mangrove areas in Iguape, SP, Brazil, and reared in the laboratory in order to describe each embryonic stage. Accounts of the biometry, internal morphology, and coloration of the eggs were taken. The embryonic development took 19 +/- 1d (27degreesC, 12:12 h) with eight well-defined stages. A salinity test on embryonic development was conducted, and a better result was obtained in a rearing at 15parts per thousand. Eggs are slightly ellipsoid through development and undergo an increase of 13.9% in diameter to 91.7% in volume. Cluster analysis revealed three different groups for diameter (Stages I-II, III-VI, and VII-VIII) and volume (Stages I-III, IV-V, and VI-VIII), supporting the classification of embryos into initial, intermediate, and final stages, which are currently used in studies on the reproductive biology of decapod crustaceans. In this species, the identification of the different embryonic stages can be achieved only if biometric data are combined with information on the internal morphology of embryos and coloration of the eggs.

Background: The tectum is a structure localized in the roof of the midbrain in vertebrates, and is taken to be highly conserved in evolution. The present article assessed three hypotheses concerning the evolution of lamination and citoarchitecture of the tectum of nontetrapod animals: 1) There is a significant degree of phylogenetic inertia in both traits studied (number of cellular layers and number of cell classes in tectum); 2) Both traits are positively correlated accross evolution after correction for phylogeny; and 3) Different developmental pathways should generate different patterns of lamination and cytoarchitecture.Methodology/Principal Findings: The hypotheses were tested using analytical-computational tools for phylogenetic hypothesis testing. Both traits presented a considerably large phylogenetic signal and were positively associated. However, no difference was found between two clades classified as per the general developmental pathways of their brains.Conclusions/Significance: The evidence amassed points to more variation in the tectum than would be expected by phylogeny in three species from the taxa analysed; this variation is not better explained by differences in the main course of development, as would be predicted by the developmental clade hypothesis. Those findings shed new light on the evolution of an functionally important structure in nontetrapods, the most basal radiations of vertebrates.

Classical models of gravity gradient, solar radiation, aerodynamic and magnetic torques acting on a circular cylinder satellite. The magnitude of each such are compared with parameterization in terms of the dimensions of the satellite and its altitude in relation to the Earth's surface. Two different satellite data are considered. The results agree with the classical results and show that for altitude between 0 and 800 km the gravity gradient, aerodynamic and magnetic torques decrease with altitude while the solar radiation torque is almost independent of the altitude. The relative importance of these torques depends on the size, mass, moments of inertia and altitude of the satellite. The results can be useful to propagate the satellite attitude, to satellite missions analysis and to validate the analytical approaches. (C) 2003 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier B.V. Ltd. Three sets of non-singular canonical variables for the rotational motion are analyzed. These sets are useful when the angle between z-axis of a coordinate system fixed in artificial satellite ( here defined by the directions of principal moments of inertia of the satellite) and the rotational angular momentum vector is zero or when the angle between Z-inertial axis and rotational angular momentum vector is zero. The goal of this paper is to compare all these sets and to determine the benefits of their uses. With this objective, the dynamical equations of each set were derived, when mean hamiltonian associate with the gravity gradient torque is included. For the torque-free rotational motion, analytical solutions are computed for symmetrical satellite for each set of variables. When the gravity gradient torque is included, an analytical solution is shown for one of the sets and a numerical solution is obtained for one of the other sets. By this analysis we can conclude that: the dynamical equation for the first set is simple but it has neither clear geometrical nor physical meaning; the other sets have geometrical and physical meaning but their dynamical equations are more complex.

On day 64 after artificial insemination, a six-year-old primiparous briard bitch whelped three live pups between 05.00 and 08.00. It was presented at 11.00 on the same day with failure to complete parturition. on ultrasound examination, a normal live fetus was observed and the bitch was treated with oxytocin three times during the day (1(.)0, 2(.)0 and 2(.)0 iu intramuscularly), with no effect. The following day, a higher dose of oxytocin (5(.)0 iu) was administered intramuscularly at 11.00, after a uterine ultrasound examination confirmed viability of the fetus. At 18.00 of the same day, the bitch whelped the fourth normal live pup, 37 hours after initiation of parturition and 34 hours after expulsion of the last fetus. Effectiveness of oxytocin and normal versus prolonged parturition due to uterine inertia are discussed.
