In conservation agriculture, mainly under direct seeding, maintaining the vegetation ground cover is essential, since this serves as a reservoir of nutrients which are slowly released to plants by microorganisms. Some authors have sought to study increases in the amount of straw in the soil, in addition to slowing down the process of decomposition, with hormesis being one of the techniques used. This technique states that all chemical substances are both poisonous and nonpoisonous, with only the dosage determining whether they are lethal or not. This study aimed to evaluate the dry weight and agronomic characteristics of a crop of black oat subjected to hormesis. The experimental design was of randomised blocks, with 12 treatments and 4 replications, giving a total of 48 experimental lots. The treatments were: Haloxyfop-R Methyl Ester at dosages of 0.625, 1.25 and 2.50 g ha(-1); Glyphosate at dosages of 12.50, 25.00 and 50.00 g ha-1; 2,4-D dimethylamine salt at dosages of 100.00, 200.00 and 300.00 g ha(-1); Alterbane at a dosage of 500.00 g ha(-1); Salicylic acid at a dose of 100 g ha(-1); and a control. It was concluded that for the subdosages under test, the herbicides 2,4-D at medium dosage and Verdict at low dosage were shown to be the best treatments for conserving straw as ground cover under direct seeding.

Under conservation tillage systems is critical to maintaining plant residues from previous crops on the soil surface. A technique called Hormesis aims to increase the amount of straw and also cause a delay in straw decomposition. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the agronomic characteristics of corn under no-tillage system subjected to Hormesis. The experiment was carried out at UNESP campus in the city of Botucatu, SP . The experimental was design in completely randomized blocks. The treatments based on the technique of Hormesis were : control (no application) , sub Gliphosate low dosage (12.5 g.ai.ha - 1 ) , sub Gliphosate average dosage (25 g. ai.ha - 1 ) , sub Gliphosate high dose (50 g. ai.ha -1 ), 2,4-D under low dose (100 g. ai.ha -1 ), 2,4-D sub average dosage (200 g. ai.ha -1 ) 2,4- D under high dosage (300 g. ai.ha -1 ) sub Verdict low dose (0.625 g. ai.ha -1 ) sub Verdict average dosage (1.25 g. ai.ha -1 ) , sub Verdict high dosage (2.5 g. ai.ha - 1 ) . In addition, the following characteristics were evaluated: plant height, first ear growth, stem diameter , ear length , number of rows per cob, cob diameter , , percentage of grains on the cob , mass of plant dry matter, and yield. The results showed that all the treatments showed no statistical difference, the maize was not affected with sub doses of herbicides applications under the field and weather conditions in which the experiment was conducted.

BACKGROUND: Glyphosate blocks the shikimic acid pathway, inhibiting the production of aromatic amino acids and several secondary compounds derived from these amino acids. Non-target plants can be exposed to low doses of glyphosate by herbicide drift of spray droplets and contact with treated weeds. Previous studies have reported that low doses of glyphosate stimulate growth, although these data are very limited. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of low glyphosate doses on growth of a range of plant species.RESULTS: Growth of maize, conventional soybean, Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden, Pinus caribea L. and Commelia benghalensis L. was enhanced by 1.8-36 g glyphosate ha(-1). Growth of glyphosate-resistant soybean was unaffected by any glyphosate dose from 1.8 to 720 g AE ha(-1). The optimum doses for growth stimulation were distinct for plant species and tissue evaluated. The greatest stimulation of growth was observed for C. benghalensis and P. caribea. Shikimic acid levels in tissues of glyphosate-treated soybean and maize were measured and found to be elevated at growth-stimulating doses.CONCLUSION: Subtoxic doses of glyphosate stimulate the growth of a range of plant species, as measured in several plant organs. This hormesis effect is likely to be related to the molecular target of glyphosate, since the effect was not seen in glyphosate-resistant plants, and shikimate levels were enhanced in plants with stimulated growth. As all herbicides act on pathways or processes crucial to plants, in an inhibitory or stimulatory way, low doses of any herbicide might be used to beneficially modulate plant growth, development, or composition. Glyphosate, the most used herbicide in the world, is widely applied at low rates to ripen sugarcane. Low rates of glyphosate also can stimulate plant growth (this effect is called hormesis). When applied at recommended rates for weed control, glyphosate can inhibit rust diseases in glyphosate-resistant wheat and soybean. Fluridone blocks carotenoid biosynthesis by inhibition of phytoene desaturase and is effective in reducing the production of abscisic acid in drought-stressed plants. Among the acetolactate synthase inhibitors, sulfometuron-methyl is widely used to ripen sugarcane and imidazolinones can be used to suppress turf species growth. The application of protoporphyrinogen oxidase inhibitors can trigger plant defenses against pathogens. Glufosinate, a glutamine syntherase inhibitor, is also known to improve the control of plant diseases. Auxin agonists (i.e., dicamba and 2,4-D) are effective, low-cost plant growth regulators. Currently, auxin agonists are still used in tissue cultures to induce somatic embryogenesis and to control fruit ripening, to reduce drop of fruits, to enlarge fruit size, or to extend the harvest period in citrus orchards. At low doses, triazine herbicides stimulate growth through beneficial effects on nitrogen metabolism and through auxin-like effects. Thus, sublethal doses of several herbicides have applications other than weed control.

O envelhecimento pode estar associado ao maior acúmulo de lesões celulares decorrentes das espécies reativas do oxigênio e do nitrogênio derivadas do metabolismo mitocondrial. Com a progressão da idade, há acúmulo de proteínas, lipídeos, carboidratos e DNA oxidados em relação a organismos jovens, de acordo com a teoria dos radicais livres. Entretanto, nem sempre os idosos ou animais envelhecidos apresentam maior estresse oxidativo que os jovens. Este artigo discute o paradoxo da teoria dos radicais livres de acordo com a teoria da biogênese da manutenção adequada do metabolismo mitocondrial. Diversos fatores podem contribuir para a redução do estresse oxidativo, como a hormese induzida pela prática regular de exercícios físicos, a restrição calórica, a ingestão de antioxidantes nutricionais e o aumento da produção de antioxidantes celulares que. em conjunto, estes promovem a expressão das sirtuínas e das proteínas do choque térmico, protegendo a integridade e funcionalidade mitocondriais, reduzindo o estresse oxidativo e nitrosativo, o que está associado à redução do envelhecimento e aumento da longevidade.

Efeito hormótico é definido como o efeito estimulante de pequenas doses de substâncias, as quais em doses maiores são inibitórias. Esta pesquisa objetivou verificar, em casa-de-vegetação, o efeito de subdoses do herbicida gliphosate no desenvolvimento inicial de cana-de-açúcar. Plantas de cana-de-açúcar foram obtidas de gemas isoladas plantadas em vasos plásticos de 2,5 L. Aos 50 dias após o plantio, gliphosate foi aplicado nas doses de 0; 1,8; 3,6; 7,2; 18; 36; 72; 180; 360 e 720 g e.a. ha-1. Aos 0 e 25 dias após a aplicação (DAA) foram avaliados altura da planta, número de perfilhos, número de folhas verdes, número de folhas secas e estimativa do conteúdo de clorofila (índice SPAD). Aos 25 DAA também foram determinadas a massa fresca e seca da parte aérea e raízes das plantas. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições. A dose de 1,8 g e.a. ha-1 de gliphosate estimulou as características de crescimento no desenvolvimento inicial da cana-de-açúcar. Esse efeito hormótico poderá ser utilizado como manejo da cultura para obter melhor exploração do ambiente de produção.

The lodging of some rice cultivars at harvest time can lead to significant losses in yield, and the inappropriate water and nitrogen management, under high-tech conditions, can aggravate the problem. The use of vegetal regulators is an alternative to reduce lodging, however, information on this topic are rare. The study aimed to evaluate the application of glyphosate sub doses (26 g ha -1, 52 g ha -1, 78 g ha -1, 104 g ha -1, 130 g ha -1, 156 g ha -1, and 182 g ha -1) on agronomical traits, development, and yield of upland rice crops irrigated by aspersion, during the floral differentiation period. The experiment was carried out in Selvíria, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil, through the agricultural years of 2008/2009 and 2009/2010. The increase of glyphosate sub doses, at the floral differentiation period of the Primavera cultivar, reduced the plants height, panicle size, and, consequently, yield. Sub doses higher than or equal to 78 g ha -1 eliminated the plants lodging process.

Free radicals are produced during aerobic cellular metabolism and have key roles as regulatory mediators in signaling processes. Oxidative stress reflects an imbalance between production of reactive oxygen species and an adequate antioxidant defense. This adverse condition may lead to cellular and tissue damage of components, and is involved in different physiopathological states, including aging, exercise, inflammatory, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. In particular, the relationship between exercise and oxidative stress is extremely complex, depending on the mode, intensity, and duration of exercise. Regular moderate training appears beneficial for oxidative stress and health. Conversely, acute exercise leads to increased oxidative stress, although this same stimulus is necessary to allow an up-regulation in endogenous antioxidant defenses (hormesis). Supporting endogenous defenses with additional oral antioxidant supplementation may represent a suitable noninvasive tool for preventing or reducing oxidative stress during training. However, excess of exogenous antioxidants may have detrimental effects on health and performance. Whole foods, rather than capsules, contain antioxidants in natural ratios and proportions, which may act in synergy to optimize the antioxidant effect. Thus, an adequate intake of vitamins and minerals through a varied and balanced diet remains the best approach to maintain an optimal antioxidant status. Antioxidant supplementation may be warranted in particular conditions, when athletes are exposed to high oxidative stress or fail to meet dietary antioxidant requirements. Aim of this review is to discuss the evidence on the relationship between exercise and oxidative stress, and the potential effects of dietary strategies in athletes. The differences between diet and exogenous supplementation as well as available tools to estimate effectiveness of antioxidant intake are also reported. Finally, we advocate the need to adopt an individualized diet for each athlete performing a specific sport or in a specific period of training, clinically supervised with inclusion of blood analysis and physiological tests, in a comprehensive nutritional assessment.
