Silver nanoparticles have high temperature stability and low volatility, and at the nanoscale are known to be an effective antifungal and antimicrobial agent. The present investigation involves the synthesis of silver nanoparticle/carboxymethylcellulose nanocomposites. The nanoparticles synthesised in this study had sizes in the range of 100 and 40 nm. The nanocomposites formed by a combination of metallic nanoparticles and carboxymethylcellulose were characterised by contact angle measurements, solubility tests, thermal and mechanical analyses, and morphological images. Improvements in the hydrophobic properties were observed with inclusion of the nanoparticles in the nanocomposites, with the best results occurring after the addition of 40 nm nanoparticles in a carboxymethylcellulose matrix. The silver nanoparticles tend to occupy the empty spaces in the pores of the carboxymethylcellulose matrix, inducing the collapse of these pores and thereby improving the tensile and barrier properties of the film. The aim of this article is to propose advances for the preparation of hybrid nanocomposites prepared by the combination of intercalation from solution and melt-processing methods. This research investigates the effect of the laponite RDS content on the thermal, structural, and mechanical properties of thermoplastic starch (TPS). X-ray diffraction was performed to investigate the dispersion of the laponite RDS layers into the TPS matrix. The results show good nanodispersion, intercalation, and exfoliation of the clay platelets, indicating that these composites are true nanocomposites. The presence of laponite RDS also improves the thermal stability and mechanical properties of the TPSmatrix due to its reinforcement effect which was optimized by the high degree of exfoliation of the clay. Thus, these results indicate that the exfoliated TPS-laponite nanocomposites have great potential for industrial applications and, more specifically, in the packaging field. © The Author(s) 2011 Reprints and permissions: sagepub.co.uk/journalsPermissions.nav.

In this work we report the effects of incorporation of variable amounts (0.5-25%w/w) of montmorillonite in poly(oxyethylene) based materials in order to decrease the polymer crystallinity. Two different classes of materials were studied: silica-poly(oxyethylene)-montmorillonite hybrids prepared by the sol-gel route and poly(oxyethylene)-montmorillonite nanocomposites prepared by mixing the dry clay or the clay aqueous suspension into the melt poly(oxyethylene). The effects of monternorillonite loading on the poly(oxyethylene) crystallization control and on the nanostructural features were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction, small-angle X-ray scattering and differential scanning calorimetry. Experimental results show that free montmorillonite layers coexist with open aggregates and tactoids in the poly(oxyethylene)-montmorillonite nanocomposites, with different features depending on the filler proportion and preparation route. The intercalation of polymer chains in montmorillonite galleries markedly hinders the crystallization of the poly(oxyethylene) matrix. For hybrids materials the silica phase favors the exfoliation of montmorillonite tactoids, so that samples are predominantly constituted by dispersed platelets. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. This is a study of the structural transformations occurring in hybrid siloxane-polypropyleneglycol (PPG) nanocomposites, with different PPG molecular weight, along the drying process. The starting materials are wet gels obtained by the sol-gel procedure using as precursor the 3-(trietoxysilyl)propylisocyanate (IsoTrEOS) and polypropylenglycol bis(2-amino-propyl-ether) (NH2-PPG-NH2). The shrinkage and mass loss measurements were performed using a temperature-controlled chamber at 50 degreesC. The nanostructural evolution of samples during drying was studied in situ by small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). The experimental results demonstrate that the drying process is highly dependent on the molecular weight of polymer. After the initial drying stage, the progressive emptying of pores leads to the formation of a irregular drying front in gels prepared from PPG of high molecular weight, like 4000 g/mol. As a consequence, an increase of the SAXS intensity due to the increase of electronic density contrast between siloxane clusters and polymeric matrix is observed. For hybrids containing PPG of low molecular weight, the pore emptying process is fast, leading to a regular drying front, without isolated nanopockets of solvents. SAXS intensity curves exhibit a maximum, which was associated to the existence of spatial correlation of the silica clusters embedded in the polymeric matrix. The spatial correlation is preserved during drying. These results also reveal that the structural transformation during drying is governed by capillary forces and depends on the entanglement of polymer chains.

This work presents the synthesis and characterization of SiO2:metal (Ni, Co, Ag, and Fe) nanocomposites processed by the polymerizable complex method. The polymeric precursor solutions obtained were characterized by means of FT-Raman and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. The results show the formation of a hybrid polymer with carbon and silicon in the macromolecule chain and the transition metal cation arrested within this polymeric chain. The nanocomposites are formed during the controlled polymeric precursor pyrolysis. The reduction of the metal cation is promoted by the CO/CO2 atmosphere resulting from the pyrolysis of the organic material. Microstructural characterization, performed by TEM and X-ray diffraction (XRD), showed that the nanocomposites are formed by metal nanoparticles embedded in a amorphous matrix formed by SiO2 and carbon. In the SiO2:Fe system, Fe3C was also detected by XRD.
Small-angle X-ray scattering study of sol-gel-derived siloxane-PEG and siloxane-PPG hybrid materials
Resumo:
Hybrid organic-inorganic two-phase nanocomposites of siloxane-poly(ethylene glycol) (SiO3/2-PEG) and siloxane-poly(propylene glycol) (SiO3/2-PPG) have been obtained by the sol-gel process. In these composites, nanometric siloxane heterogeneities are embedded in a polymeric matrix with covalent bonds in the interfaces. The structure of these materials was investigated in samples with different molecular weights of the polymer using the smalt-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) technique. The SAXS spectra exhibit a well-defined peak that was attributed to the existence of a strong spatial correlation of siloxane clusters. LiClO4-doped siloxane-PEG and siloxane-PPG hybrids, which exhibit good ionic conduction properties, have also been studied as a function of the lithium concentration [O]/[Li], O being the oxygens of ether type. SAXS results allowed us to establish a structural model for these materials for different basic compositions and a varying [Li] content. The conclusion is consistent with that deduced from ionic conductivity measurements that exhibit a maximum for [O]/[Li] =15.

Hybrid transparent and flexible siloxane-polypropyleneglycol (PPG) materials with covalent bonds between the inorganic (siloxane) and organic (polymeric) phases were prepared by sol-gel process. In order to improve the quality of the mechanical properties of these materials, different amounts of methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) were added to the initial sol. The effect of MTES addition on the structure of the composites was studied by Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS) and Si-29 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (Si-29 NMR). In absence of MTES, SAXS spectra exhibit a peak that is assigned to spatial correlation due to short range order between the siloxane clusters embedded in the polymeric phase. The experimental results indicate that, for low MTES concentrations ([MTES]/[O] less than or equal to 0.8, O: ether-type oxygen of PPG), the silicon species resulting from hydrolysis and condensation of MTES fill the open spaces between polymeric chains, interacting with the ether-type oxygens. For larger MTES content ([MTES]/[O] greater than or equal to 0.8), the number of free ether-type oxygen sites avalaible for reaction with such silicon species is not large enough. Consequently, a fraction of silicon species resulting from MTES addition graft to siloxane clusters formed by hydrolysis and condensation of the hybrid precursor. For all MTES concentrations the condensation degree of the siloxane phase, determined from Si-29 NMR spectroscopy, is high (> 69%), as expected under neutral pH synthesis conditions.

Hybrid siloxane-polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) nanocomposites with covalent bonds between the inorganic (siloxane) and organic (polymer) phases were prepared by the sot gel process through hydrolysis and polycondensation of 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propylmethacrylate (TMSM) and polymerization of methylmethacrylate (MMA) using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as initiator. The effect of MMA, BPO and water contents on the viscoelastic behaviour of these materials was analysed during gelation by dynamic rheological measurements. The changes in storage (G') and loss moduli (G), complex viscosity (eta*) and phase angle (6) were measured as a function of the reaction time showing the viscous character of the sot in the initial step of gelation and its progressive transformation to an elastic gel. This study was complemented by Si-29 and C-13 solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR/MAS) measurements of dried gel. The analysis of the experimental results shows that linear chains are formed in the initial step of the gelation followed by a growth of branched structures and formation of a three-dimensional network. Near the gel point this hybrid material demonstrates the typical scaling behaviour expected from percolation theory.

C-13 exchange solid-state NMR methods were used to study two families of siloxane/poly-(ethylene glycol) hybrid materials: Types I and II, where the polymer chains interact with the inorganic phase through physical (hydrogen bonds or van der Waals forces) or chemical (covalent bonds) interactions, respectively. These methods were employed to analyze the effects of the interactions between the organic and inorganic phases on the polymer dynamics in the milliseconds to seconds time scale, which occurs at temperatures below the motional narrowing of the NMR line width and around the polymer glass transition. Motional heterogeneities associated with these interactions and evidence of both small and large amplitude motions were directly observed for both types of hybrids. The results revealed that the hindrance to the slow molecular motions of the polymer chains due to the siloxane structures depends on the chain length and the nature of the interaction between the organic and inorganic phases.

The local and medium-range structures of siloxane-POE hybrids doped with Fe(III) ions and prepared by the sol-gel process were investigated by X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES)/extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), respectively. The experimental results show that the structure of these composites depends on the doping level. EXAFS data reveal that, for low doping levels ([O]/[Fe] > 40, oxygens being of the ether-type of the POE chains), Fe(III) ions are surrounded essentially by a shell of chlorine atoms, suggesting the formation of FeCl4- anions. At high doping levels ([O]/[Fe] < 20), Fe(III) ions interacts mainly with oxygen atoms and form FeOx species. The relative proportion of FeOx species increases with iron concentration, this result being consistent with the results of SAXS measurements showing that increasing iron doping induces the formation of iron-rich nanodomains embedded in the polymer matrix.
NMR study of ion-conducting organic-inorganic nanocomposites poly(ethylene glycol) - Silica - LiClO4
Resumo:
Hybrid organic-inorganic ionic conductors, also called ormolytes, were obtained by dissolution of LiClO4 into silica/poly(ethylene glycol) matrices. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was used to probe the inorganic phase structure (Si-29) and the effects of the temperature and composition on the dynamic behavior of the ionic species (Li-7) and the polymer chains (H-1 and C-13). The NMR results between -100 and +90 degrees C show a strong correlation with ionic conductivity and differential scanning calorimetry experiments. The results also demonstrate that the cation mobility is assisted by segmental motion of the polymer, which is in agreement with the results previously reported for pure poly(ethylene oxide), PEG, electrolytes.

In this work we investigate the effect of hydrochloric acid (HC) addition on the structure and thermal and magnetic properties of iron-doped siloxane-polyoxyethylene (POE) hybrids prepared by the sol-gel route. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) results reveal the dominance of ferrihydrite nanoparticles and a mixture of this phase with FeCl4- species in the hybrid prepared without and with HCl, respectively. Thermal analysis reveals the existence of two crystalline polymeric phases in the hybrid prepared with HCl whereas hybrids prepared without HCl are amorphous. The 105 and 60 Angstrom sized ferrihydrite nanoparticles were detected by SAXS analysis of the composite prepared without and with HCl, respectively. The magnetic results suggest that in both samples antiferromagnetic nanoparticles coexist with small clusters/isolated ions. In the sample without HCl addition, larger particles dominate the magnetic behavior, while the opposite occurs for the sample prepared using HCl catalyst. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Hybrid organic-inorganic ionic conductors, also called ormolytes (organically modified electrolytes), were obtained by dissolution of LiClO 4 in siloxane-poly(propylene glycol) matrixes. The dynamic features of these nanocomposites were studied and correlated to their electrical properties. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was used to probe the effects of the temperature and nanocomposite composition on the dynamic behaviors of both the ionic species ( 7Li) and the polymer chains ( 13C). NMR, dc ionic conductivity, and DSC results demonstrate that the Li + mobility is strongly assisted by the segmental motion of the polymer chain above its glass transition temperature. The ac ionic conductivity in such composites is explained by use of the random free energy barrier (RFEB) model, which is agreement with their disordered and heterogenous structures. These solid ormolytes are transparent and flexible, and they exhibit good ionic conductivity at room temperature (up to 10 -4 S/cm). Consequently, they are very promising candidates for use in several applications such as batteries, sensors, and electrochromic and photoelectro-chemical devices.
