The H1 Collaboration recently reported a new analysis of data on the inelastic photoproduction of J/psi mesons at DESY's HERA ep collider. We show that these new experimental results are well described by the color evaporation model for quarkonium production. Moreover, these new data require the introduction of resolved photon contributions in order to accommodate the results in the kinematic region where the fractional energy carried by the J/psi is small, demonstrating that colored perturbative c (c) over bar states contribute to the production of a color singlet.

A contact four-fermion interaction between light quarks and electrons has been evoked as a possible explanation for the excess of events observed by HERA at high-Q2. We explore the 1-loop effects of such interaction in Γ(Z0 → e+e-) measured at LEP and impose strong bounds on the lower limit of the effective scale. Our results are able to discard some of the contact interactions as possible explanation for the HERA events. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Measurements of the inelastic photoproduction of charmonium at HERA have ignited a new charmonium crisis. The Color Singlet approach to computing onium production cross sections fits the data for large charmonium energy fraction z, where color octet models fail. This approach is however in qualitative disagreement with a wealth of information that exist on charmonium production by other initial states. We here suggest that the source of the discrepancy between color octet models (whether implemented in the soft color or NRQCD formalism) and data is due to the neglect of non-perturbative effects. Implementing these in a scheme originally developed for Drell-Yan phenomenology, we illustrate how agreement with the data is achieved. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Starting from the well established form of the Dirac action coupled to the electromagnetic and torsion field we find that there is some additional softly broken local symmetry associated with torsion. This symmetry fixes the form of divergences of the effective action after the spinor fields are integrated out. Then the requirement of renormalizability fixes the torsion field to be equivalent to some massive pseudovector and its action is fixed with accuracy to the values of coupling constant of torsion-spinor interaction, mass of the torsion and higher derivative terms. Implementing this action into the abelian sector of the Standard Model we establish the upper bounds on the torsion mass and coupling. In our study we used results of present experimental limits on four-fermion contact interaction (LEP, HERA, SLAC, SLD, CCFR) and TEVATRON limits on the cross section of new gauge boson, which could be produced as a resonance at high energy pp̄ collisions. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. The methods of effective field theory are used to explore the theoretical and phenomenological aspects of the torsion field. The spinor action coupled to the electromagnetic field and torsion possesses an additional softly broken gauge symmetry. This symmetry enables one to derive the unique form of the torsion action compatible with unitarity and renormalizability. It turns out that the antisymmetric torsion field is equivalent to a massive axial vector field. The introduction of scalars leads to serious problems which are revealed after the calculation of the leading two-loop divergences. Thus the phenomenological aspects of torsion may be studied only for the fermion-torsion systems. In this part of the paper we obtain upper bounds for the torsion parameters using present experimental data on forward-backward Z-pole asymmetries, data on the experimental limits on four-fermion contact interaction (LEP, HERA, SLAC, SLD, CCFR) and also TEVATRON limits on the cross section of a new gauge boson, which could be produced as a resonance at high energy pp collisions. The present experimental data enable one to put limits on the torsion parameters for the various ranges of the torsion mass. We emphasize that for a torsion mass of the order of the Planck mass no independent theory for torsion is possible, and one must directly use string theory. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.

We analyze several signals at HERA and the Tevatron of a light U(1)B gauge boson (γB) coupling to baryon number. We show that the study of the production of bb pairs at the (upgraded) Tevatron can exclude γB with masses (mB) in the range 40 ≲ mB ≲ 300 GeV for γB couplings (αB) greater than 2 × 10-2 (3 × 10-3). We also show that the HERA experiments cannot improve the present bounds on γB. Moreover, we demonstrate that the production at HERA and the Tevatron of di-jet events with large rapidity gaps between the jets cannot be explained by the existence of a light γB. © 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. The high parton density effects are strongly dependent of the spatial gluon distribution within the proton, with radius R, which cannot be derived from perturbative QCD. In this paper we assume that the unitarity corrections are present in the HERA kinematical region and constrain the value of R using the data for the proton structure function and its slope. We obtain that the gluons are not distributed uniformly in the whole proton disc, but behave as concentrated in smaller regions. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.

In Heracles Mainomenos, by Euripides, the hero is submited to the ultimate test: win himself, accepting stay alive after committing an irremediable error. The dramatic action has dual motivation, human and divine. The human conflict requires resilience of families and friends of Heracles and the opposition of Lico is a key element to the action. In the subsequent clash between Heracles and the goddess Hera, victory lies with the deity, motivating the disaster, but confirms the heroics of Heracles, that resists the urge to annihilation after the murder of children. His friend, King Theseus, provides him the support needed to dissuade him from his purpose of annihilation and strengthens him for endurance. The valuation of philia is an important element in shaping the sense of this euripidean text.

We evaluate the potential for searching for isosinglet neutral heavy leptons (N), such as right-handed neutrinos, in the next generation of e+e- linear colliders, paying special attention to contributions from the reaction γe→WN initiated by photons from beamstrahlung and laser back-scattering. We find that these mechanisms are both competitive and complementary to the standard e+e-→vN annihilation process for producing neutral heavy leptons in these machines and greatly extends the search range over HERA and LEP200.
