Usually, the kinetic models used in the study of sintered ceramic are performed by means of indirect physical tests, such as, results obtained from data of linear shrinkage and mass loss. This fact is justified by the difficulty in the determinations of intrinsic parameters of ceramic materials along every sintering process. In this way, the technique of atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used in order to determine the importance and the evolution of the dihedral angle in the sintering of 0.5 mol% MnO2-doped tin dioxide obtained by the polymeric precursor method.

High purity SnO 2 powder (>99.9%) was compacted in cylindrical pellets and sintered in atmospheres of dry argon, argon with water vapor, oxygen and CO 2 using 10 °C/min up to 1200 °C or isotherms in the range of 1000 to 1200 °C. Time, temperature and sintering atmosphere have large influence on grain growth and low influence on densification of this oxide. Surface diffusion is the dominant mechanism up to 1200 °C and evaporation-condensation is dominant above 1200 °C. The maximum linear shrinkage observed was about 2.0% and attributed to structural rearrangement of particles due to high capillary stresses developed with neighboring particles. © 1999 Trans Tech Publications.

SnO2 ceramics doped with ZnO and WO3 were prepared by mixed oxide method. The effect of ZnO and WO3 additives could be explained by the substitution of Sn4+ by Zn2+ and W6+. The addition of WO3 inhibits the grain growth due to the segregation of SnZnWO8 and ZnWO6 at the grain boundaries without strong influence on the densification process. The electrical characterization (log E x log J) shows that the ternary system SnO2-ZnO-WO3 exhibits a very high resistivity of around 10(14) Omega M. Independently of the WO3 concentration, the electrical conductivity of the Sn02-ZnO-WO3 system is always lower than that of the undoped tin dioxide. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. Kinetics of short-range ordering (SRO) in Ag with 21, 23 and 28 at% Zn is investigated by residual resistometry during isochronal and isothermal heat treatment for different states of post-deformation defect annealing after cold-rolling to about 30 and 60% thickness reduction. Resistivity changes due to pure ordering can be separated from the as-measured total resistivity change which includes defect annealing. Although the initial state of SRO of the as-rolled material can be estimated to be comparably low, for as-rolled and partially annealed states by appropriate thermal treatment evolution of SRO is achieved which corresponds quite well to that of recrystallized samples. It is observed, however, that quenched-in surplus vacancies contribute considerably to the ordering process for the recrystallized state and that this contribution is still increased by the grain growth during the final stage of annealing. It therefore turns out that SRO-kinetics under equilibrium vacancy conditions can be better observed in a state of post-deformation annealing, for which deformation induced point defects are annealed-out, but a relatively high dislocation density is still present to act as a vacancy sink. The physicochemical electronic characteristics of SnO2 render it useful in many technical applications, including ceramic varistors, stable electrodes used in electric glass-melting furnaces and electrometallurgy of aluminum, transparent windows and chemical sensors. The use of ZnO as a sintering aid was explored in this study to obtain SnO2 as a dense ceramic. Compacts were obtained by mechanical mixing of oxides, isostatic pressing at 210 MPa and sintering in situ inside a dilatometer at heating rates of 10degreesC/min. The grain size and microstructure were investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM). The phases and chemical composition were analyzed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicated that ZnO acts as a densification aid for SnO2, improving its grain growth with additions of up to 2 mol%. ZnO forms a solid solution with SnO2 UP to 1 mol%, above which SnZnO3 precipitates in the grain boundary, potentially inhibiting shrinkage and grain growth. (C) 2004 Kluwer Academic Publishers

The sintering of ZrO2. MgO . ZnO powder has been investigated by TMA (Thermal Mechanical Analyser) and its phases analysed by XRD (X-ray diffraction pattern). The data obtained from sintering was studied by the Bannister equation and its dominant sintering mechanism was calculated. It was observed that the ZnO addition in the ZrO2. MgO solid solution lead to increased zirconia stabilization, According to the vacancies model, the ZnO addition did not lead to zirconia phases stabilization (PSZ). An analysis of the rate control in the initial stage of the sintering (region I) showed a mechanism of volume diffusion type. In other regions (regions II and III), the grain growth did lead to the Bannister equation deviation, which was observed by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). These results were different from those demonstrated by other authors who studied the ZrO2. Y2O3 solid solution and obtained a mechanism of grain boundary diffusion type. The present work presents results on natural sintering of tin dioxide ceramics, prepared by a chemical route or by conventional mixing and containing manganese (X-Mn = Mn/(Mn + Sn)(atomic) with 0 less than or equal to X(Mn)less than or equal to 0.15). This cation, which is practically insoluble in SnO2 network, stays at the grain surface. During thermal treatment (500 degrees C less than or equal to T-s less than or equal to 1400 degrees C), as long as the manganese surface concentration is lower than a critical value, equal to 5.10(-6) mol m(-2), no densification takes place. As soon as this value is reached, densification and grain growth occur simultaneously. The shrinkage kinetics is fast and high rho/rho(t) values can be obtained (for example. rho/rho(t)=0.95 for T-s=1300 degrees C and X-Mn=0.004). The dependence between manganese content, manganese distribution, grain size and sintering behaviour is also discussed. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier B.V. Limited.

The sintering process of nanometric undoped SnO2 powder was studied. No macroscopic shrinkage was observed during the sintening process. Grain growth kinetics investigation showed that surface diffusion is the dominant mechanism in the temperature range 500-1300 degreesC. For temperatures higher than 1300 degreesC, high weight loss was measured, suggesting evaporation-condensation as the dominant mass-transport mechanism. Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and mass spectroscopy studies showed that the surface contamination of the SnO2 particles by chemical species like H2O, OH- and CO2, has a strong influence on the role of mass transport controlled by surface diffusion. Thin films of BaBi2Ta2O9 (BBT) composition were prepared through the metal organic decomposition method. The crystallinity, phase formation, crystallite size and morphology of the thin films were measured as a function of the type of substrate, stoichiometry of solution and process variables such as thickness and temperature. The thin films were investigated by grazing incidence X-ray diffractometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques. For the sample without excess of bismuth, diffraction peaks other than that of the BBT phase were observed. A well crystallized BBT single phase was observed for films prepared from a solution with 10% excess of bismuth, deposited on Si/Pt substrate, with a thickness up to 150 nm and sintered at temperatures of 700 degreesC. The thin BBT phase films heat-treated at 600 degreesC presented a diffraction pattern characteristic of samples with lower degree of crystallinity whereas for the thin films heat-treated at 800 degreesC, we observed the presence of other phases than the BBT. For the thin film deposited on the Sin+ substrate, we observe that the peaks corresponding to the BBT phase are broader than that observed on the samples deposited on the Pt and Si/Pt substrates. No variation of average crystallite size was observed as the excess of Bi increased from 10 to 20%. AFM images for the samples showed that the increasing the amount of bismuth promotes grain growth. The average surface roughness measured was in the range of 16-22 nm showing that the bismuth amount had no or little effect on the roughness of films. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

BaTiO3 is usually doped to achieve the temperature stability required by device applications, as well as to obtain a large positive temperature coefficient anomaly of resistivity (PTCR). Uniform distribution of dopants among the submicron dielectric particles is the key for optimal control of grain size and microstructure to maintain a high reliability. The system Ba0.84Pb0.16TiO3 was synthesized from high purity BaCO3, TiO2, PbO oxide powders as raw materials. Sb2O3, MnSO4 and ZnO were used as dopants and Al2O3, TiO2 and SiO2 as grain growth controllers. Phase composition was analyzed by using XRD and the microstructure was investigated by SEM. EDS attached to SEM was used to analyze phase composition specially related to abnormal grain growth. Electrical resistivities were measured as a function of temperature and the PTCR effect characterized by an abrupt increase on resistivity.

SnO2-based varistors doped with ZnO and WO3 were prepared by mixed oxide method. Experimental evidence shows that the increase in ZnO amount increases the volume and microstrain of unit cell while the WO3 promotes a decrease. The effect of ZnO and WO3 additives could be explained by the substitution of Sn4+ by Zn2+ and W6+. The addition of WO3 inhibits the grain growth due to the segregation in the grain boundary without influence in the densification of the samples. Besides that, an increase in the electrical resistance of the SnO2-ZnO-WO3 system was observed independent of the WO3 concentration. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
