Edaphic characterization of a forest savanna ecotone in southeastern Brazil. This study was motivated by the scarcity of studies involving descriptions of edaphic horizons in the transition from savanna to forest. It aims at comparing the chemical features and the texture of savanna and forest soils in one ecotone, and at considering possible edaphic influences on vegetation. In areas pertaining to the Botanical Garden of Bauru, State of São Paulo, two-meter deep pits were opened in different parts of a seasonal semi-deciduous forest and of a forested savanna to directly collect soil samples in different horizons. The physicochemical analysis revealed high contents of different nutrients, e.g., Ca and Mg, and low contents of Al in the superficial horizons of the seasonal forest, which were classified as eutrophic. Conversely, all the forested savanna horizons were considered as dystrophic. These edaphic features may be due to the different microenvironments of the studied phytocenoses.

A pair of Planalto Woodcreepers (Dendrocolaptes platyrostris) fed young in a nest cavity 6 m up in a wooded botanic garden of an old eucalyptus grove near São Paulo, Brazil, during October 1982. The pair often visited together at first, one (likely male) raising its head feathers as noted in other species of the genus. Feedings were less frequent at midday. Songs of the southeastern moist forest D. p. platyrostris were strikingly different from inland dry forest D. p. intermedius, despite intermediate specimens where the two rather distinctly colored forms come together. There are several poorly studied forms in interior dry forests, which need much more conservation effort.

The objective of this work was to characterize external and internal morphologic aspects of the fruit, seed, and plant of Moringa oleifera Lam. The fruits were collected in the forest garden of Falculty of Agrarian and Veterinarian Sciences, São Paulo State University, Jaboticabal-SP, Brazil. It was observed that the Moringa fruits are brown simple darkness, dry of the type capsule, tends on average: 28.50 cm of length, 2.21 cm of width, 9.91 g of mass and with 12 seeds by fruit, it considerated fruits of medium and small size. The seeds are brown dark and they present three lines clear chestnut tree. The embryo is oleaginous, has a pair of cotyledons and the germination is hypogeal-cryptocotyledonary. The seed has1.037 cm of length and 1.0 cm of thickness of average and have a considerate medium and light weight (197g/1000 seeds). The germination began eight days after the planting and in the 25th day they left the primary leaves.
