Descriptive herd variables (DVHE) were used to explain genotype by environment interactions (G x E) for milk yield (MY) in Brazilian and Colombian production environments and to develop a herd-cluster model to estimate covariance components and genetic parameters for each herd environment group. Data consisted of 180,522 lactation records of 94,558 Holstein cows from 937 Brazilian and 400 Colombian herds. Herds in both countries were jointly grouped in thirds according to 8 DVHE: production level, phenotypic variability, age at first calving, calving interval, percentage of imported semen, lactation length, and herd size. For each DVHE, REML bivariate animal model analyses were used to estimate genetic correlations for MY between upper and lower thirds of the data. Based on estimates of genetic correlations, weights were assigned to each DVHE to group herds in a cluster analysis using the FASTCLUS procedure in SAS. Three clusters were defined, and genetic and residual variance components were heterogeneous among herd clusters. Estimates of heritability in clusters 1 and 3 were 0.28 and 0.29, respectively, but the estimate was larger (0.39) in Cluster 2. The genetic correlations of MY from different clusters ranged from 0.89 to 0.97. The herd-cluster model based on DVHE properly takes into account G x E by grouping similar environments accordingly and seems to be an alternative to simply considering country borders to distinguish between environments.

The structure and the kinetics of formation of APTS/GPTS-derived organic/inorganic hybrids were studied in situ by small-angle-X-ray scattering. The data were interpreted in terms of a process of primary particles formation and growth of mass-fractal clusters. At the very early stage, the population of the nonfractal primary particles (D = 3) increases with time. As the mass-fractal clusters appear (D < 3) as a result of the aggregation process, the radius of gyration, Rg, of the clusters increases on average. At advanced stages of aggregation, the clusters grow in a mechanism in which the number of particles per clusters increases while the number of clusters diminishes with time, in such a way that the correlation volume of the clusters, Vc, fulfills the relationship Vc â̂ R g D, in agreement with a mass-fractal character of the clusters. These results supporting a cluster-cluster aggregation process, together with the typically very low value found for the mass-fractal dimension D, are in favor of a diffusion-controlled cluster aggregation mechanism. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

Geometric, thermodynamic and electronic properties of cluster neutrals NbxOy and cations NbxOy+ (x = 1-3; y = 2-5, 7, 8) have been characterized theoretically. A DFT calculation using a hybrid combination of B3LYP with contracted Huzinaga basis sets. Numerical results of the relative stabilities, ionization potentials and band gaps of different clusters are in agreement with experiment. Analysis of dissociation channels supports the more stable building blocks as formed by NbO2, NbO2+ NbO3 and NbO3+ stoichiometries. The net atomic charges suggest that oxygen donor molecules can interact more favorably on central niobium atoms of cluster cations, while the interaction with oxygen acceptor molecules is more favorable on the terminal oxygen atoms of neutral clusters. A topological analysis of the electron localization function gradient field indicates that the clusters may be described as having a strong ionic interaction between Nb and O atoms. A novel supermolecule constituted by four mu(3)-oxo-triruthenium acetate clusters coordinated to manganese(III)-meso -tetra(4-pyridil)porphyrin acetate ([MnTPyP]CH3COO) has been synthesized. Characterization has been performed by UV-Vis and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The electrochemical behavior (cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry) in N,N'-dimethylformamide has been analyzed in terms of five redox processes: three related to peripheral clusters (Ru-IV,Ru-III,Ru-III/Ru-III,Ru-III,Ru-III/Ru-III,Ru-II,Ru-II) and two centered on the Mn-porphyrin core ((MnP)-P-III/(MnP)-P-II/(MnP2-)-P-II). A direct comparison has been performed between MnTCP and MnTPyP as catalysts for the cyclooctene and cyclohexane oxidation reactions. The improved selectivity exhibited by the supramolecular catalyst for cyclohexane oxidation has been ascribed to electronic effects on the oxomanganese(V) porphyrin species induced by the four peripheral clusters, in the formal (RuRuRuIII)-Ru-IV-Ru-III oxidation state. The aim of this study is to describe the degree of yeast-colonization in diabetic and hemodialysed-users of dental prostheses. Individuals (306) were examined using an oral rinse technique in order to evaluate the incidence of yeast-carriage, and genotype of C. albicans. Yeasts were isolated from 68.4% (91/133) individual's dental prostheses users. Dental prostheses were found to be a significant factor for the yeast colonization (P < 0.05). Overall, the intensity of carriage was higher in diabetic patients as compared with health and hemodialysed individuals (P < 0.05). The isolation rates were: C. albicans (51.7%), C. parapsilosis (20.9%), C. tropicalis (14.3%), C. glabrata (6.6%), C. krusei (3.3%), C. rugosa (1.1%), and Pichia (Pichia ohmeri, 2.2%). Ready-To-Go RAPD Analysis Beads were used and primer OPJ 6 distinguished the C. albicans isolates found in prostheses users. All the isolates were grouped into 11 RAPD profiles in four main clusters and, the average S (AB) for the entire collection of 47 C. albicans isolates were 0.779 +/- 0.178. Over 85% of isolates had a similarity level higher than or equal to 0.8 reinforcing the idea that the use of dental prostheses, independently of the host's clinical condition, probably provides the necessary conditions for these strains to gain a growth-specific advantage over others.

Sixty-three Paracoccidioides brasiliensis isolates obtained from three nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novem-cinctus), one Amazonian armadillo's and 19 clinical isolates were compared by random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis with the primer OPG-19. The isolates were divided into three major clusters, I, II and III. Coincidences between human and armadillo isolates were observed in clusters I and II. Cluster III consisted only of armadillos' isolates. The results suggested that (I) humans may acquire P. brasiliensis infection by contact with armadillo's environment, (II) there may be P. brasiliensis genotypes peculiar to the animal, and (III) individual armadillos may be infected with P brasiliensis cells with different genotypes.

The data mining of Eucalyptus ESTs genome finds four clusters (EGCEST2257E11.g, EGBGRT3213F11.g, and EGCCFB1223H11.g) from highly conservative 14-3-3 protein family which modulates a wide variety of cellular processes. Multiple alignments were built from twenty four sequences of 14-3-3 proteins searched into the GenBank databases and into the four pools of Eucalyptus genome programs. The alignment has shown two regions highly conservative on the sequences corresponding to the motifs of protein phosphorylation and nine highly conservative regions on the sequence corresponding to the linkage regions of alpha helices structure based on three dimensional of dimer functional structure. The differences of amino acid into the structural and functional domains of 14-3-3 plant protein were identified and can explain the functional diversity of different isoforms. The phylogenic protein trees were built by the maximum parsimony and neighborjoining procedures of Clustal X alignments and PAUP software for phylogenic analysis.

Parasite virulence genes are usually associated with telomeres. The clustering of the telomeres, together with their particular spatial distribution in the nucleus of human parasites such as Plasmodium falciparum and Trypanosoma brucei, has been suggested to play a role in facilitating ectopic recombination and in the emergence of new antigenic variants. Leishmania parasites, as well as other trypanosomes, have unusual gene expression characteristics, such as polycistronic and constitutive transcription of protein-coding genes. Leishmania subtelomeric regions are even more unique because unlike these regions in other trypanosomes they are devoid of virulence genes. Given these peculiarities of Leishmania, we sought to investigate how telomeres are organized in the nucleus of Leishmania major parasites at both the human and insect stages of their life cycle. We developed a new automated and precise method for identifying telomere position in the three-dimensional space of the nucleus, and we found that the telomeres are organized in clusters present in similar numbers in both the human and insect stages. While the number of clusters remained the same, their distribution differed between the two stages. The telomeric clusters were found more concentrated near the center of the nucleus in the human stage than in the insect stage suggesting reorganization during the parasite's differentiation process between the two hosts. These data provide the first 3D analysis of Leishmania telomere organization. The possible biological implications of these findings are discussed.

Major and 5S ribosomal genes have been localized in chromosomes from five fish species, genus Aslyanax, using in situ hybridization (FISH) with 28S and 5S rDNA probes. In situ signals for the major rDNA co-localized with the 5S rDNA clusters in the pericentromeric region of one marker chromosome in all five species analyzed. The conserved localization of these two rDNA clusters in the five related Astyanax species was considered as indicative of a close relationship among them. The use of these molecular markers for elucidating evolutionary relationships among closely related taxa is discussed. Copyright (C) 2002 S. Karger AG, Basel.
