This study was carried out to verify the morphology of the spina mentalis. We observed 275 human adult mandibles of both sexes and ethnic groups. An analysis of the results allows the following conclusions. The spina mentalis exists in 90.04% ±1.8 of the mandibles of Whites and Negroes. The typical form with four tubercles, as described by some authors, is rarely found. In most cases it is characterized by the presence of: two upper tubercles (27.27%±7.2), two superior tubercles and one inferior (24.72%±6.7), and one elongated median tubercle (24.0%±6.6); The forms and volumes of the tubercles are very irregular and seem not to depend on age, sex or ethnic group. The spina was absent in 9.8%±3.2 of the cases, especially in mandibles of White teethless individuals. An hypertrophic spina mentalis, generally formed at the expense of the upper tubercle, was observed in only 1.45%±0.5 of the cases.

Beach deposits occur in high energy environments with continual sorting by swash and backswash. The fines are removed by the backswash, which is not competent to remove the coarser material. Hence negative asymmetry (skewness) results. The wind transports only the finer fraction to the dunes, resulting in a tendency towards a positively skewed distribution. In the case studied the aeolian sand has a mean asymmetry of 0.13, the beach sand -0.11. Equivalent values for mean grain size and standard deviation are 2.51 and 0.24 (aeolian) and 2.41 and 0.37 (beach). Beach sands are therefore coarser and less well sorted than aeolian sands. -V.Gardiner

The lysogenic capacity of human macrophages facing M. leprae in vitro may be dependent on an important genetic component. Although the familial aggregation of the trait is demonstrated, this is a necessary but not sufficient condition to prove genetic influence. The data do not fit some simple genetic models (autosomal dominant or incompletely dominant gene; dominant or recessive sex-linked gene). The results obtained are consistent with the hypothesis that the macrophages' lysogenic capacity is mainly due to a major gene with variable expressivity. This hypothesis may be too simple to account for the whole variability detected and therefore must be considered a working hypothesis.

Looks at the procedures used to organize producers and production in Alta Sorocabana, Brazil. An increasing subordination of the industry is leading to a loss in the competition for expansion. Spatial effects in the region and future trends in tomato cultivation are examined.-J.Robertson

The population redistribution processes considered at a micro level, such as that for the Upper-Paulista Railroad micro-region (Marilia) in Brazil, shows that for nearly 50 years there was accelerated demographic growth followed immediately afterwards by varied declines involving the rural and urban populations.-from English summary

Examines the historiography of the geographical ideas in Brazil starting from the analysis of Monbeig's work which has two essential elements: the positivist-functionalist discourse, and the ideals of the politic liberalism that are his main preoccupation. The preoccupation of geography as a science is constant in all his discourse. -English summary

160 groundwater bores in the Ribeirao Preto region were used to study the behaviour of the piezometric surface of the Botucatu Formation aquifer by geostatistical methodology. The semi-variogram showed the following results: nugget = 50 m2; sill = 450 m2 and range = 4.5 km. The piezometric surface, obtained by punctual kriging in a 100 x 100 knot grid, revealed two lowered zones: one in a southwest to north-northeastern trend, indicating the groundwater flow north toward the Rio Pardo; and the other in the central part due to the high concentration of holes in the urban region of Ribeirao Preto city. -from English summary
