A comparative study of the non-isothermal degradation of natural rubber from Mangabeira (Hancornia speciosa Gomes) and Seringueira (Hevea brasiliensis)

Due to the increasing search for alternative sources of natural rubber (NR) whose properties are similar to Hevea brasiliesis, several sources have been studied in the past few years. Among them, Mangabeira (Hancornia speciosa Gomes), which is native to Amazon rainforest and other regions of Brazil, has a potential as another viable rubber source. As a continuation of a series of comparative studies between Hancornia and Hevea (clone RRIM 600) these two species by our research team, their thermal behavior was analyzed by thermogravimetry (TG) using Flynn-Wall-Ozawa's approach in order to obtain kinetic parameters (reaction order, pre-exponential factor and activation energy) of the decomposition process. Results indicated that the thermal behavior of NR from Hancornia was comparable to Hevea with some differences observed as follows: reaction order for Hancornia was higher than for Hevea at the beginning of degradation and very close for temperatures over 350 A degrees C; activation energy and pre-exponential factor had the same trend, i.e., increased with increasing degree of conversion remaining almost constant between 20 and 70% and then increasing for higher degrees, although Hevea was slightly more thermally stable than Hancornia. These major influences in the degradation process in the early stage are attributed to differences in non-rubber constituents present in these two species.

New species of Haplometroides (Digenea: Plagiorchiidae) from Phalotris nasutus (Gomes, 1915) (Serpentes, Colubridae)

A new species of Haplometroides (Digenea, Plagiorchiidae) is described from a specimen of Phalotris nasutus (Gomes, 1915) (Serpentes, Colubridae). The host snake was obtained in the municipality of Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. Trematodes were recovered from esophagus, stomach, and small intestine of the host. The main characteristic of the new species is the vitellaria, which is intercecal, cecal, and extracecal in the preacetabular region. A key for identification of the species in Haplometroides is proposed. © American Society of Parasitologists 2007.

Análise da evolução da paisagem no entorno da represa dos rios jaguari e jacareí, estado de são paulo, com base em sensoriamento remoto e SIG

The primary objective of this study is to evaluate by means of remote sensing and GIS, the landscape evolution around the Jaguari and Jacareí River Dam, located in the eastern section of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. For this purpose we used LANDSAT 5/YM and CBERS-2/CCD images from 1984/1985 and 2006, respectively, considering the following classes of land use: forest, cultivated forest, agriculture, urban areas and water bodies. The two selected dates reflect important changes in the region such as the installation of the dam and subsequent urbanization of parts of its margins and the enlargement of the Fernão Dias Federal Highway, which contributed to an increase of areas of anthropic activities in the studied region. The results also indicate an increase in areas covered by native and planted forests, thus confirming a similar trend in other areas of the State of São Paulo.

O meteorito condrítico Saulo Gomes

This paper aims to present the results of petrographic and lithochemical studies obtained in one of the three artifacts, which fell on the farm Buritis in Buritizal County in August 1967, which were collected and stored until the present by reporter Saulo Gomes. The petrographic analysis showed that the artifact is composed by spherical and irregular chondrules with serial granulometry and size averaging around 1 mm and the largest reaching about 6 mm in diameter. The chondrules are made of olivine, ortho and clinopyroxene, crystallite glass, nickel iron alloy and troillite (kamacite and/or taenite/tetrataenite) and inter chondrules glassy material occurs in association with troillite, nickel and other alloy iron-based compounds. The lithochemical data show excellent correlation with the C chondrite, noting only small differences above or between them. The study made it possible to classify the artifact as type L3 and L4 ordinary chondrite.

A Grammatica da Lingoagem Portuguesa de Fernão de Oliveira (1507-1582?) é a primeira gramática da Língua Portuguesa, publicada em 1536. Como outras obras, dedicase à fonética, à ortografia e à formação de palavras. É uma obra de grande valor lingüístico pela competência descritiva de seu autor e pelos comentários que faz a fatos da linguagem. De todos os aspectos que impressionam o lingüista de hoje, e são muitos, a descrição fonética é a mais brilhante, a mais completa e a mais detalhada. Pelo rigor de sua descrição fonética, é possível saber com segurança muitos traços da pronúncia de sua época, quer do ponto de vista segmental quer do prosódico.
