Germanium- and tellurium-based glasses have been largely studied due to their recognized potential for photonics. In this paper, we review our recent studies that include the investigation of the Stokes and anti-Stokes photoluminescence (PL) in different glass systems containing metallic and semiconductor nanoparticles (NPs). In the case of the samples with metallic NPs, the enhanced PL was attributed to the increased local field on the rare-earth ions located in the proximity of the NPs and/or the energy transfer from the metallic NPs to the rare-earth ions. For the glasses containing silicon NPs, the PL enhancement was mainly due to the energy transfer from the NPs to the Er3+ ions. The nonlinear (NL) optical properties of PbO-GeO 2 films containing gold NPs were also investigated. The experiments in the pico- and subpicosecond regimes revealed enhanced values of the NL refractive indices and large NL absorption coefficients in comparison with the films without gold NPs. The reported experiments demonstrate that germanate and tellurite glasses, having appropriate rare-earth ions doping and NPs concentration, are strong candidates for PL-based devices, all-optical switches, and optical limiting. © 2013 Cid Bartolomeu de Araujo et al.

\A new class of tungstate fluorophosphate glasses was identified in the NaPO3-BaF2-WO3 ternary system. The variation of several physical properties was determined with respect to chemical composition. Characteristic temperatures, density and refractive index increase as tungsten oxide content increases. The optical transmission range and specially the energy bandgap depend of the WO3 amount. No crystallization could be observed for the Most WO3 concentrated vitreous samples (greater than or equal to20% molar). Color and optical properties of the glasses depend of the melting time because of the presence of reduced tungsten species like W5+ and W4+. In addition, photodarkening is observed in tungsten rich glass samples under UV laser illumination and this phenomenon can be reversible by heat treatment near the glass transition temperature. Glass formation has been investigated in binary systems based on antimony oxide as the main glass former: (100-x)Sb2O3-xWO3, (5 < x < 65), (100 - x)Sb2O3-xSbPO(4), (5 < x < 80) and (100 - x)Sb2O3-x[Sb(PO3)(3)](n), (10 < x < 40). Ternary systems derived from the Sb2O3-WO3 binary glass have also been studied: Sb2O3-WO3-BaF2 Sb2O3-WO3-NaF and Sb2O3-WO3-[Sb(PO3)(3)](n). Glass transition temperature ranges from 280 degreesC to 380 degreesC. It increases as the concentration in tungsten oxide or antimony phosphate increases. Refractive index is larger than 2. Tungsten-containing glasses are yellow in transmission and turn green at the largest WO3 content. Optical transmission and temperatures of glass transition, T-g, onset of the crystallization. T-x, and maximum of crystallization, T-p, have been measured using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). These glasses have potential photonic applications. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Diverse amorphous hydrogenated carbon-based films (a-C:H, a-C:H:F, a-C:H:N, a-C:H:Cl and a-C:H:Si:O) were obtained by radiofrequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and plasma immersion ion implantation and deposition (PIIID). The same precursors were used in the production of each pair of each type of film, such as a-C:H, using both PECVD and PIIID. Optical properties, namely the refractive index, n, absorption coefficient, α, and optical gap, ETauc, of these films were obtained via transmission spectra in the ultraviolet-visible near-infrared range (wavelengths from 300 to 3300 nm). Film hardness, elastic modulus and stiffness were obtained as a function of depth using nano-indentation. Surface energy values were calculated from liquid drop contact angle data. Film roughness and morphology were assessed using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The PIIID films were usually thinner and possessed higher refractive indices than the PECVD films. Determined refractive indices are consistent with literature values for similar types of films. Values of ETauc were increased in the PIIID films compared to the PECVD films. An exception was the a-C:H:Si:O films, for which that obtained by PIIID was thicker and exhibited a decreased ETauc. The mechanical properties - hardness, elastic modulus and stiffness - of films produced by PECVD and PIIID generally present small differences. An interesting effect is the increase in the hardness of a-C:H:Cl films from 1.0 to 3.0 GPa when ion implantation is employed. Surface energy correlates well with surface roughness. The implanted films are usually smoother than those obtained by PECVD. ©2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Amorphous hydrogenated chlorinated carbon (a-C:H:Cl) films were produced by the plasma polymerization of chloroform-acetylene-argon mixtures in a radiofrequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition system. The main parameter of interest was the proportion of chloroform in the feed, R(C), which was varied from 0 to 80%. Deposition rates of 80 nm min (1) were typical for the chlorinated films. Infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy revealed the presence of C-Cl groups in all the films produced with chloroform in the feed. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed this finding, and revealed a saturation of the chlorine content at similar to 47 at.% for R(C)>= 40%. The refractive index and optical gap, E(04), of the films were roughly in the 1.6 to 1.7, and the 2.8 to 3.7 eV range. These values were calculated from transmission ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectra. Chlorination leads to an increase in the water surface contact angle from similar to 40 degrees to similar to 77 degrees. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Oxygen-deficient TiO2 films with enhanced visible and near-infrared optical absorption have been deposited by reactive sputtering using a planar diode radio frequency magnetron configuration. It is observed that the increase in the absorption coefficient is more effective when the O-2 gas supply is periodically interrupted rather than by a decrease of the partial O-2 gas pressure in the deposition plasma. The optical absorption coefficient at 1.5 eV increases from about 1 x 10(2) cm(-1) to more than 4 x 10(3) cm(-1) as a result of the gas flow discontinuity. A red-shift of similar to 0.24 eV in the optical absorption edge is also observed. High resolution transmission electron microscopy with composition analysis shows that the films present a dense columnar morphology, with estimated mean column width of 40nm. Moreover, the interruptions of the O-2 gas flow do not produce detectable variations in the film composition along its growing direction. X-ray diffraction and micro-Raman experiments indicate the presence of the TiO2 anatase, rutile, and brookite phases. The anatase phase is dominant, with a slight increment of the rutile and brookite phases in films deposited under discontinued O-2 gas flow. The increase of optical absorption in the visible and near-infrared regions has been attributed to a high density of defects in the TiO2 films, which is consistent with density functional theory calculations that place oxygen-related vacancy states in the upper third of the optical bandgap. The electronic structure calculation results, along with the adopted deposition method and experimental data, have been used to propose a mechanism to explain the formation of the observed oxygen-related defects in TiO2 thin films. The observed increase in sub-bandgap absorption and the modeling of the corresponding changes in the electronic structure are potentially useful concerning the optimization of efficiency of the photocatalytic activity and the magnetic doping of TiO2 films. Thin films were deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition from titanium (IV) ethoxide (TEOT)-oxygen-helium mixtures. Actinometric optical emission spectroscopy was used to obtain the relative plasma concentrations of the species H, CH, O and CO as a function of the percentage of oxygen in the feed, R(ox). The concentrations of these species rise with increasing R(ox) and tend to fall for R(ox) greater than about 45%. As revealed by a strong decline in the emission intensity of the actinometer Ar as R(ox) was increased, the electron mean energy or density (or both) decreased as greater proportions of oxygen were fed to the chamber. This must tend to reduce gas-phase fragmentation of the monomer by plasma electrons. As the TEOT flow rate was fixed, however, and since the species H and CH do not contain oxygen, the rise in their plasma concentrations with increasing R(ox) is explained only by intermediate reactions involving oxygen or oxygen-containing species. Transmission infrared (IRS) and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) spectroscopies were employed to investigate film structure and composition. The presence of CH(2), CH(3), C=C, C-O and C=O groups was revealed by IRS. In addition, the presence of C-O and C=O groups was confirmed by XPS, which also revealed titanium in the +4 valence state. The Ti content of the films, however, was found to be much less than that of the monomer material itself. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An enhanced genetic algorithm (EGA) is applied to solve the long-term transmission expansion planning (LTTEP) problem. The following characteristics of the proposed EGA to solve the static and multistage LTTEP problem are presented, (1) generation of an initial population using fast, efficient heuristic algorithms, (2) better implementation of the local improvement phase and (3) efficient solution of linear programming problems (LPs). Critical comparative analysis is made between the proposed genetic algorithm and traditional genetic algorithms. Results using some known systems show that the proposed EGA presented higher efficiency in solving the static and multistage LTTEP problem, solving a smaller number of linear programming problems to find the optimal solutions and thus finding a better solution to the multistage LTTEP problem. Langmuir films have been fabricated from poly[(2-methoxy-5-n-hexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene] (OC1OC6-PPV). The stability and the area per monomer for condensed films indicate the formation of true monolayers with a very small extent of aggregation, which is unusual for polymer films. This is attributed to the linearity of the alkyl side chain. The Y-type Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films produced from Langmuir films of OC1OC6-PPV have distinctive features compared to those of cast films, probably due to the organization in the LB films whereas the molecules are randomly oriented in cast films. Infrared absorption spectra recorded for both transmission and reflection modes indicate that OC1OC6-PPV molecules are anchored to the substrate by the lateral groups. This is confirmed by the Raman spectrum, in which a distortion of the vinylene group was observed, and by surface enhanced fluorescence (SEF) on an LB monolayer deposited onto Ag nanoparticles. The more homogeneous nature of the LB films in comparison with the case of cast films was demonstrated by optical microscopy and fluorescence measurements where the emission spectra were essentially the same for different regions of an LB film but showed dispersion in cast films. The LB films also displayed reversible photoconductivity.
