In the present study we compared the effects produced by moxonidine (alpha(2)-adrenoceptor/imidazoline agonist) injected into the 4th cerebral ventricle and into the lateral cerebral ventricle on mean arterial pressure, heart rate and on renal, mesenteric and hindquarter vascular resistances, as well as the possible action of moxonidine on central alpha(1)- or alpha(2)-adrenoceptors to produce cardiovascular responses. Male Holtzman rats (n = 7-8) anesthetized with urethane (0.5 g/kg, intravenously - i.v.) and alpha-chloralose (60 mg/kg, i.v.) were used. Moxonidine (5, 10 and 20 nmol) injected into the 4th ventricle reduced arterial pressure (-19 +/- 5, -30 +/- 7 and -43 +/- 8 mmHg vs. vehicle: 2 +/- 4 mmHg), heart rate (-10 +/- 6, - 16 +/- 7 and -27 +/- 9 beats per minute - bpm, vs. vehicle: 4 +/- 5 bpm), and renal, mesenteric and hindquarter vascular resistances. Moxonidine (5, 10 and 20 nmol) into the lateral ventricle only reduced renal vascular resistance (-77 +/- 17%, - 85 +/- 13%, -89 +/- 10% vs. vehicle: 3 +/- 4%), without changes on arterial pressure, heart rate and mesenteric and hindquarter vascular resistances. Pre-treatment with the selective alpha(2)-adrenoceptor antagonist yohimbine (80, 160 and 320 nmol) injected into the 4th ventricle attenuated the hypotension (-32 +/- 5, -25 +/- 4 and -12 +/- 6 mmHg), bradycardia (-26 +/- 11, -23 +/- 5 and -11 +/- 6 bpm) and the reduction in renal, mesenteric and hindquarter vascular resistances produced by moxonidine (20 nmol) into the 4th ventricle. Pretreatment with yohimbine (320 nmol) into the lateral ventricle did not change the renal vasodilation produced by moxonidine (20 nmol) into the lateral ventricle. The alpha(1)-adrenoceptor antagonist prazosin (320 nmol) injected into the 4th ventricle did not affect the cardiovascular effects of moxonidine. However, prazosin (80, 160 and 320 nmol) into the lateral ventricle abolished the renal vasodilation (-17 +/- 4, -6 +/- 9 and 2 +/- 11%) produced by moxonidine. The results indicate that the decrease in renal vascular resistance due to moxonidine action in the forebrain is mediated by alpha(1)-adrenoceptors, while the cardiovascular effects produced by moxonidine acting in the brainstern depend at least partially on the activation of coadrenoceptors. The novel coordination polymer with the formula {[Nd2(2,5-tdc)3(dmf)2(H2O)2].dmf.H2O}n (2,5-tdc2-=2,5-thiophedicarboxylate anion and dmf=dimethylformamide) has been synthesized and characterized by thermal analysis (TG/DTA), vibrational spectroscopy (FTIR) and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Structure analysis reveals that Nd(III) ions show dicapped trigonal prism coordination geometry. The 2,5-tdc2- ligands connect four Nd(III) centers, adopting (κ1 - κ1) - (κ1 - κ1) - μ4 coordination mode, generating an interesting 6-connected uninodal 3D network. Photophysical properties were studied using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DR) and excitation/emission spectra. The photoluminescence data show the near infrared emission (NIR) with the characteristic 4F3/2→4IJ (J=9/2, 11/2 and 13/2) transitions of Nd(III) ion, indicating that 2,5-tdc2- is able to act as a sensitizer for emission in NIR region. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Two metabolism assays were carried out to determine corn and soybean meal metabolizable energy when enzymes were added. In the first trial, 35 cockerels per studied feedstuff (corn and soybean meal) were distributed in a completely randomized experimental design with four treatments of seven replicates of one bird each. The evaluated treatments were: ingredient (corn and soybean meal) with no enzyme addition, with the addition of an enzyme complex (xylanase, amylase, protease - XAP), xylanase, or phytase. Precise feeding method was used to determine true metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen balance (TMEn). The use of enzymes did not result in any differences (p>0.05) in soybean meal TMEn, but phytase improved corn TMEn in 2.3% (p=0.004). In the second trial, 280 seven-day-old broiler chicks were distributed in a completely randomized experimental design with seven treatments of five replicates of eight birds each. Treatments consisted of corn with no enzyme addition or with the addition of amylase, xylanase, phytase, XAP complex, XAP+phytase combination, or xylanase/ pectinase/β-glucanase complex (XPBG). Corn was supplemented with macro and trace minerals. Total excreta collection was used to determine apparent metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen balance (AMEn). Differences were observed (p=0.08) in AMEn and dry matter metabolizability coefficient (p=0.03). The combination of the XAP complex with phytase promoted a 2.11% increase in corn AMEn values, and the remaining enzymes allowed increased between 0.86% and 1.66%.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the roles of oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in the ventricular remodeling that is induced by tobacco smoke exposure after myocardial infarction.METHODS: After induced myocardial infarction, rats were allocated into two groups: C (control, n=25) and ETS (exposed to tobacco smoke, n=24). After 6 months, survivors were submitted to echocardiogram and biochemical analyses.RESULTS: Rats in the ETS group showed higher diastolic (C = 1.52 +/- 0.4 mm(2), ETS = 1.95 +/- 0.4 mm(2); p=0.032) and systolic (C = 1.03 +/- 0.3, ETS = 1.36 +/- 0.4 mm(2)/g; p=0.049) ventricular areas, adjusted for body weight. The fractional area change was smaller in the ETS group (C = 30.3 +/- 10.1 %, ETS = 19.2 +/- 11.1 %; p=0.024) and E/A ratios were higher in ETS animals (C = 2.3 +/- 2.2, ETS = 5.1 +/- 2.5; p=0.037). ETS was also associated with a higher water percentage in the lung (C = 4.8 (4.3-4.8), ETS = 5.5 (5.3-5.6); p=0.013) as well as higher cardiac levels of reduced glutathione (C = 20.7 +/- 7.6 nmol/mg of protein, ETS = 40.7 +/- 12.7 nmol/mg of protein; p=0.037) and oxidized glutathione (C = 0.3 +/- 0.1 nmol/g of protein, ETS = 0.9 +/- 0.3 nmol/g of protein; p=0.008). No differences were observed in lipid hydroperoxide levels (C = 0.4 +/- 0.2 nmol/mg of tissue, ETS = 0.1 +/- 0.1 nmol/mg of tissue; p=0.08).CONCLUSION: In animals exposed to tobacco smoke, oxidative stress is associated with the intensification of ventricular re-remodeling after myocardial infarction.

Objectives: To study the behavior of procalcitonin and to verify whether it can be used to differentiate children with septic conditions. Methods: Children were enrolled prospectively from among those aged 28 days to 14 years, admitted between January 2004 and December 2005 to the pediatric intensive care unit at Universidade Estadual Paulista UNESP with sepsis or septic shock. The children were classified as belonging to one of two groups: the sepsis group (SG; n = 47) and the septic shock group (SSG; n = 43). Procalcitonin was measured at admission (TO) and again 12 hours later (T12h), and the results classed as: < 0.5 ng/mL = sepsis unlikely; >= 0.5 to < 2 = sepsis possible; >= 2 to < 10 = systemic inflammation and : 10 = septic shock. Results: At T0 there was a greater proportion of SSG patients than SG patients in the highest PCT class [SSG: 30 (69.7%) > SG: 14 (29.8%); p < 0.05]. The proportion of SSG patients in this highest PCT class was greater than in all other classes (>= 10 = 69.7%; >= 2 to < 10 = 18.6%; >= 0.5 to < 2 = 11.6%; < 0. 5 = 0.0%; p < 0.05). The behavior of procalcitonin at T12h was similar to at T0. The pediatric risk of mortality (PRISM) scores for the SSG patients in the highest procalcitonin class were more elevated than for children in the SG [SSG: 35.15 (40.5-28.7) vs. SG: 18.6 (21.4-10.2); p < 0.05].Conclusions: Procalcitonin allows sepsis to be differentiated from septic shock, can be of aid when diagnosing septic conditions in children and may be related to severity.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition and dry matter in vitro digestibility of stem, leaf, straw, cob and kernel fractions of eleven corn (Zea mays) cultivars, harvested at two cutting heights. The experiment was designed as randomized blocks, with three replicates, in a 2 × 11 factorial arrangement (eleven cultivars and two cutting heights). The corn cultivars evaluated were D 766, D 657, D 1000, P 3021, P 3041, C 805, C 333, AG 5011, FOR 01, CO 9621 and BR 205, harvested at a low cutting height (5 cm above ground) and a high cutting height (5 cm below the first ear insertion). Cutting height influenced the dry matter content of the stem fraction, which was lower (23.95%) in plants harvested at the low, than in plants harvested at the high cutting height (26.28%). The kernel fraction had the highest dry matter in vitro digestibility (85.13%), while cultivars did not differ between each other. Cob and straw were the fractions with the highest level of neutral detergent fiber (80.74 and 79.77%, respectively) and the lowest level of crude protein (3.84% and 3.69%, respectively). The leaf fraction had the highest crude protein content, both for plants of low and high cuttings (15.55% and 16.20%, respectively). The increase in the plant cutting height enhanced the dry matter content and dry matter in vitro digestibility of stem fraction, but did not affect the DM content of the leaf fraction.
