The effect of addition of different amounts of acetylacetone (acacH) on the species formed at room temperature and after thermohydrolysis at 70 degreesC for 30 and 120 min of ethanolic SnCl4.5H(2)O solutions is followed by EXAFS spectroscopy at the Sn K-edge. We show that thermohydrolyzed solutions are a mixture of SnO2 nanoparticles and soluble tin polynuclear species. The complexation of the tin molecular precursors by acetylacetonate ligands is evidenced by H-1, C-13, and Sn-119 NMR spectroscopy and EXAFS for a acacH/Sn ratio higher than 2. Single crystals are isolated from solution and the structure, determined by X-ray diffraction, is built up from monomeric Cl-3(H2O)Sn(acac)-H2O units bridged together by hydrogen bonding. The acacH/Sn ratio in solution controls the polycondensation of the hydrolyzed species but not the crystallite size of the SnO2 nanoparticles (similar to2 nm). Because of the major presence of chelated tin mono- and dimeric complexes in solution for acacH/Sn > 2, the condensation is almost inhibited, meanwhile the decrease of amount of chelated complexes for the acacH/Sn < 2 gives rise to an increase of the number of nanoparticles.

This article reports a study of the thermal stability and morphological changes in tin oxide nanobelts grown in the orthorhombic SnO phase. The nanobelts were heat-treated in a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) furnace at 800 degrees C for I It in argon, oxygen, or synthetic air atmospheres. The samples were then characterized by DSC, X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and high resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The results confirmed that the orthorhombic SnO phase is thermodynamically unstable, causing the belts to transform into the SnO2 phase when heat-treated. During the phase transition, if oxygen is available in the furnace atmosphere, nanofibers grow at the edge of nanobelts at about 50 degrees of the belts' growth direction, while particles grow on the belt surface in the absence of oxygen. Although the decomposition process reduces the nanobelt cell volume by 22%, most belts remain monocrystalline after the heat treatment. The results confirm that phase transition is a decomposition process, which explains the morphological changes in the belts based on metallic tin generated in the process.

Phospholipases A(2) belong to the superfamily of proteins which hydrolyzes the sn-2 acyl groups of membrane phospholipids to release arachidonic acid and lysophospholipids. An acidic phospholipase A(2) isolated from Bothrops juraracussu snake venom presents a high catalytic, platelet aggregation inhibition and hypotensive activities. This protein was crystallized in two oligomeric states: monomeric and dimeric. The crystal structures were solved at 1.79 and 1.90 Angstrom resolution, respectively, for the two states. It was identified a Na+ ion at the center of Ca2+-binding site of the monomeric form. A novel dimeric conformation with the active sites exposed to the solvent was observed. Conformational states of the molecule may be due to the physicochemical conditions used in the crystallization experiments. We suggest dimeric state is one found in vivo. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The effect of the presence of tartrate additive on the chemical stability of a Cu-Sn acid bath was evaluated. It was observed that this additive hinders decomposition of the Cu/Sn deposition bath with storage time, since the decrease in electrochemical efficiency was attenuated. In addition, it was observed that optimal galvanostatic deposition with or without tartrate occurs at approximately 11 mA cm(-2). However, in the presence of tartrate the deposition charge was lower, leading to lower energy consumption. SEM analysis showed that the tartrate added to the plating bath caused a marked change in the morphology of the Cu/Sn films obtained gal vanostatic ally. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Bothropstoxin I(BthTX-I) from the venom of Bothrops jararacussu is a myotoxic phospholipase A2 (PLA2) homologue which, although catalytically inactive due to an Asp49-->Lys substitution, disrupts the integrity of lipid membranes by a Ca2+-independent mechanism, the crystal structures of two dimeric farms of BthLTX-I which diffract X-rays eo resolutions of 3.1 and 2.1 Angstrom have been determined, the monomers in both structures are related by an almost perfect twofold axis of rotation and the dimer interfaces are defined by contacts between the N-terminal alpha-helical regions and the tips of the beta-wings of partner monomers. Significant differences in the relative orientation of the monomers in the two crystal forms results in open and closed dimer conformations, Spectroscopic Investigations of BthTX-I in solution have correlated these conformational differences with changes in the intrinsic fluorescence emission of the single tryptophan residues located at the dimer interface, the possible relevance of this structural transition in the Ca2+-independent membrane damaging activity is discussed. Nanoparticles of tin oxide, doped with Ce and Y, were prepared using the polymeric precursor method. The structural variations of the tin oxide nanoparticles were characterized by means of nitrogen physisorption, carbon dioxide chemisorption, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The synthesized samples, undoped and doped with the rare earths, were used to promote the ethanol steam reforming reaction. The SnO2-based nanoparticles were shown to be active catalysts for the ethanol steam reforming. The surface properties, such as surface area, basicity/base strength distribution, and catalytic activity/selectivity, were influenced by the rare earth doping of SnO2 and also by the annealing temperatures. Doping led to chemical and micro-structural variations at the surface of the SnO2 particles. Changes in the catalytic properties of the samples, such as selectivity toward ethylene, may be ascribed to different dopings and annealing temperatures.

The electrical conductivity of Mn doped SnO2 systems prepared by an organic route (Pechini's method) has been investigated as a function of antimony and niobium concentration. The conductivity increases with the increase of both concentration ions, however, in a different manner. While the conductivity of niobium doped ceramics increases with the power of 1.6 for the entire range of concentrations studied (0.01-0.7 mol%), the conductivity of antimony doped ceramics increases with the power of 1.9 in the range 0.01-0.05 mol% of Sb; 3.7 in the range 0.05-0.30 mol% and 1.8 in the range 0.30-0.70 mol%. This behavior is attributed to the existence of two stable oxidation states for antimony: Sb3+ and Sb5+, while for niobium there is only one: Nb5+. The power of 3.7 for Sb would be related to the segregation of this ion on the grain boundary accompanied by an additional contribution coming from the substitution of Sn2+ by Sb3+ on the grain surface.
