This paper describes the preparation of thin titanium films via sol-gel route and their subsequent chemical modification by anchoring with 2-aminothiazole ligand and Pd(II) ion sorption, aiming to maximize the photocatalytic activity. The material was characterized by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, ultraviolet and visible spectrometry, X-ray diffractometry, and scanning electronic microscopy. The amount of palladium adsorbed on the film's surface, determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, showed a value of 2.69 x 10(16) atoms CM-2. The photocatalytic tests indicated that the functionalization with 2-aminothiazole and the adsorption of palladium (II) were determinants in the semiconductor's enhanced photocatalytic activity. Reactive pure and manganese-doped (5% and 10 at.%) ceria nanosized powders were prepared by the polymeric precursor technique. Physical properties of powder materials were studied by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption, and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. Characterization of powder compacts after fast firing at 1200 degrees C for 5 min was carried out by scanning electron microscopy and impedance spectroscopy measurements. The bulk apparent density of sintered pellets was determined for pellets of different compositions sintered at 1200 degrees C. A gradual decrease of the particle size occurs with increasing doping content. Relatively high values of apparent density were obtained after fast firing doped specimens at 1200 degrees C. DRIFT spectra evidence that a fraction of Mn ions was segregated onto particles surface. The electrical resistivity of sintered pellets reveals different mechanisms of conduction depending on the Mn content. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

In this study, a bioactive zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) composite was developed for orthopedic applications. This composite was obtained by slip casting of suspension powder mixtures.Biomimetic processes were used to grow a bone-like apatite layer on composite substrates using sodium silicate solution as a nucleating agent and simulated body fluids. The composites, with or without coating, were characterized by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), and their apparent density was determined by the Archimedes method. The composites obtained by this process possessed the expected stiffness and dimensions and their density values were similar to those of the composite's theoretical density (98.8%TD). The morphology of the hydroxyapatite formed on the composite surface was homogeneous and composed of small globules, characterizing a carbonated hydroxyapatite. The results of the tests indicated that the method employed to produce the composite and its coating was efficient under the conditions of this study. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The commercial pure titanium (cp-Ti) is currently being used with great success in dental implants. In this work we investigate how the cp-Ti implants can be improved by modifying the metal surface morphology, on which a synthetic material with properties similar to that of the inorganic part of the bone, is deposited to facilitate the bone/implant bonding. This synthetic material is the hydroxyapatite, HA, a calcium-phosphate ceramic. The surface modification consists in the application of a titanium oxide (TiO2) layer, using the thermal aspersion - plasma spray technique, with posterior deposition of HA, using the biomimetic method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) and Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform (DRIFT) techniques have been used for characterizing phases, microstructures and morphologies of the coatings. The TiO2 deposit shows a mixture of anatase, rutilo and TiO2-x phases, and a porous and laminar morphology, which facilitate the HA deposition. After the thermal treatment, the previously amorphous structured HA coating, shows a porous homogeneous morphology with particle size of about 2-2.5 μm, with crystallinity and composition similar to that of the biological HA.

Polycrystalline BaWO4 and PbWO4 thin films having a tetragonal scheelite structure were prepared at different temperatures. Soluble precursors such as barium carbonate, lead acetate trihydrate and tungstic acid, as starting materials, were mixed in aqueous solution. The thin films were deposited on silicon, platinum-coated silicon and quartz substrates by means of the spinning technique. The surface morphology and crystal structure of the thin films were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction, and specular reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, respectively. Nucleation stages and surface morphology evolution of thin films on silicon substrates have been studied by atomic force microscopy. XRD characterization of these films showed that BaWO4 and PbWO4 phase crystallize at 500 degreesC from an inorganic amorphous phase. FTIR spectra revealed the complete decomposition of the organic ligands at 500 degreesC and the appearance of two sharp and intense bands between 1000 and 600 cm(-1) assigned to vibrations of the antisymmetric stretches resulting from the high crystallinity of both thin films. The optical properties were also studied. It was found that BaWO4 and PbWO4 thin films have Eg = 5.78 eV and 4.20 eV, respectively, of a direct transition nature. The excellent microstructural quality and chemical homogeneity results confirmed that soft solution processing provides an inexpensive and environmentally friendly route for the preparation of BaWO4 and PbWO4 thin films. Detailed room temperature micro-Raman scattering, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy and specular reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy studies were carried out on soft chemical by processed Pb1-xBaxTiO3 thin films. The micro-Raman spectra pointed the existence of a stable tetragonal ferroelectric phase in the entire composition range (0 < x <= 1). The infrared reflectance spectra showed that the frequency of several peaks decreases as the Ba2+ concentration increases. These features are correlated to a decrease in the tetragonal distortion of the TiO6 octahedra as the Ba2+ concentration increases. Furthermore, as x increases from 0.70 to 1.0, the Raman spectrum shows an evolution towards the well-known Raman spectrum of the tetragonal BaTiO3. Therefore, we demonstrated that the combination of solid solution PbTiO3-BaTiO3 with a grain size in the order of 30-40 nm supports the tetragonal ferroelectric phase at room temperature. Strontium-modified lead titanate thin films with composition Pb1-xSrxTiO3 were grown on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates using the polymeric precursor method. The structural phase evolution as a function of the Sr contents was studied using micro-Raman scattering, specular reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction. The results showed a gradual change from tetragonal to cubic structure, the transition occurring at about x = 0.58. The infrared reflectance spectra showed that the frequency of several peaks decreases as the strontium concentration increases. These features are correlated with a decrease in the tetragonal distortion of the TiO6 octahedra as the strontium concentration increases.

Methods of assessment of compost maturity are needed so the application of composted materials to lands will provide optimal benefits. The aim of the present paper is to assess the maturity reached by composts from domestic solid wastes (DSW) prepared under periodic and permanent aeration systems and sampled at different composting time, by means of excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). EEM spectra indicated the presence of two different fluorophores centered, respectively, at Ex/Em wavelength pairs of 330/425 and 280/330 nm. The fluorescence intensities of these peaks were also analyzed, showing trends related to the maturity of composts. The contour density of EEM maps appeared to be strongly reduced with composting days. After 30 and 45 days of composting, FT-IR spectra exhibited a decrease of intensity of peaks assigned to polysaccharides and in the aliphatic region. EEM and FT-IR techniques seem to produce spectra that correlate with the degree of maturity of the compost. Further refinement of these techniques should provide a relatively rapid method of assessing the suitability of the compost to land application.
