The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of methods of preparation in postharvest conservation of minimally processed products of cactus pear fruits. Ripe cactus pear fruits orange-fleshed, from a commercial orchard in the region of Valinhos, SP, Brazil, were used. After selection, the fruits were washed and the surface sanitized with a solution of dichloro s. triazinatriona sodium dihydrate (Sumaveg (R)) 200 mg 100g(-1) of free chlorine for 5 minutes. Fruits were then stored at 12 degrees C for 12 hours before processing. The first process was the removal of the shell and ends. Then, the fruits were cut longitudinally into two halves, peeled and sliced in 2 cm thick cross-sections. The whole fruit, halves and slices were packaged in polyethylene terephthalate containers (Neoforma (R) N-94). These units were stored at 3 degrees C for 16 days and analyses were performed every 4 days. The weight loss, the content of soluble solids (SS), the titratable acidity (TA), the ratio (SS / TA) and the ascorbic acid content were evaluated and the sensory analysis of products was performed. Whole fruits were preferred concerning the purchase intent and showed better results regarding the content of soluble solids, titratable acidity, soluble solids / titratable acidity and ascorbic acid content. The highest weight loss was observed in slices.

The structure of zinc acetate derived precursor currently used in the sol-gel synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles is described. The reaction products obtained before and after reflux of ethanolic zinc acetate solution have been studied by UV-Vis, photoluminescence, FTIR and EXAFS at the Zn K edge. EXAFS results evidence for both precursor solutions a change from the octahedral coordination sphere of oxygen atoms characteristic of the solid zinc acetate dihydrate compound into a four-fold environment. The EXAFS spectra of precursor solutions can be satisfactorily reproduced using the molecular structure reported for Zn4O(Ac)(6) (Ac = COOCH3). UV-Vis and FTIR measurements are also in agreement with the formation of this oligomeric precursor. The structural modification is more pronounced after reflux at 80degreesC, because the increase of the Zn4O(Ac)(6) amount and the formation of nearly 3.0 nm sized ZnO nanoparticle.

Nano- (30-60 nm) and submicron (100-350 nm) ZnO particles were synthesized using solvothermal method at 200 degrees C from an ethanolic solution of zinc acetate dihydrate, applying different reaction conditions, i.e., pH value of precursor and time of the reaction. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance (DR), Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy have been employed for characterization of synthesized ZnO powders. It was shown that the structural, morphological, and optical properties are largely determined by reaction conditions during solvothermal synthesis. The particle crystallinity improves with the decrease of pH value and/or the increase of time of the reaction. The Raman and PL spectra analyses indicate that the oxygen interstitials are dominant intrinsic defects in solvothermally synthesized ZnO powders. It was observed that concentration of defects in wurtzite ZnO crystal lattices slightly changes with the variation of pH value of the precursor and time of the solvothermal reaction. The correlation between structural ordering and defect structure of particles and corresponding growth processes was discussed.

Used as catalysts even in organic and inorganic molecules, as additives on catalysts, electrochromic films on smart windows the tungsten trioxide have been largely studied on the lasts decades, but there is just a few about it's luminescence. Using as precursors nitric acid and sodium tungstate the tungsten trioxide were been prepared thru wet process then treating on thermic and hydrothermal treatments. Where been evaluated the effects of methodology, nitric acid concentration, duration and temperature of treatments. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman scattering spectroscopy (RSS), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy (PLS) and X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL). Hydrated phases of tungsten trioxide were obtained through hydrothermal treatments and the non-hydrated phases occur with thermic treatments. The acid concentration has the ability to determine the major phase formed as well the temperature determine the hydratation of the product. With lower temperatures dihydrate phase were preferable formed and with the rise of temperature, the water molecules were lost up to the fractionary hydratation and then the non-hydrated phase with higher temperatures depending on the atmosphere used on the thermal treatment. Doping the system with europium ions even substituting tungsten or in the interstices of the matrix were not been successful, as well the XEOL spectroscopy intensity were null and quite low for ultraviolet and visible excitation photoluminescence because of oxygen defect levels localized into the prohibited band.
