OBJECTIVES: To describe the application in Brazil of a simple, low-cost procedure, developed in India by the 10/66 Dementia Research Group, for the identification of dementia cases in the community.DESIGN: Community-based dementia case-finding method.SETTING: Piraju, São Paulo, Brazil.PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-five community health workers were trained to identify dementia cases in 2,222 people aged 65 and older in Piraju, a Brazilian town with 27,871 inhabitants.MEAUREMENTS: After the training, the health workers prepared a list of possible cases that afterward an experienced psychiatrist clinically evaluated, according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV), criteria and the Clinical Dementia Rating.RESULTS: of the 72 cases that were clinically assessed, 45 met the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for dementia. Therefore, the positive predictive value of this case finding method was 62.5%; the estimated frequency of dementia was 2%. Most of the confirmed cases met clinical criteria for Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia.CONCLUSION: This simple method was appropriate to identify cases of dementia in the general population and can possibly be extended to other developing countries with limited resources to be applied in health programs.

Human purine nucleoside phosphorylase has been submitted to intensive structure-based design of inhibitors, most of them using low-resolution structures of human PNP. Recently, several structures of human PNP have been reported, which allowed redefinition of the active site and understanding of the structural basis for inhibition of PNP by acyclovir and immucillin-H. Based on previously solved human PNP structures, we proposed here a new catalytic mechanism for human PNP, which is supported by crystallographic studies and explains previously determined kinetic data. The isotypes of RAR and RXR are retinoic acid and retinoid X acid receptors, respectively, whose ligand-binding domain contains the ligand-dependent activation function, with distinct pharmacological targets for retinoids, involved in the treatment of various cancers and skin diseases. Due to the major challenge which cancer treatment and cure still imposes after many decades to the international scientific community, there is actually considerable interest in new ligands with increased bioactivity. We have focused on the retinoid acid receptor, which is considered an interesting target for drug design. In this work, we carried out density functional geometry optimizations, and different docking procedures. We performed screening in a large database (hundreds of thousands of molecules which we optimized at the AM1 level) yielding a set of potential bioactive ligands. A new ligand was selected and optimized at the B3LYP/6-31G* level. A flexible docking program was used to investigate the interactions between the receptor and the new ligand. The result of this work is compared with several crystallographic ligands of RAR. Our theoretically more bioactive new-ligand indicates stronger and more hydrogen bonds as well as hydrophobic interactions with the receptor. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to analyze the international strengthening of copyright law in developing countries and the active involvement of the international library community in the movement against it.Design/methodology/approach - The paper describes the overprotection of intellectual property rights through international and bilateral treaties, the reaction against such through the proposal of a WIPO development agenda, and the contribution of the international library organizations to the debates and discussions in the WIPO arena.Findings - The initiative for a development agenda for WIPO has proven much more successful than many had imagined, even its promoters. The most relevant proposals made by the international library community were included in the final list of approved recommendations.Originality/value - The paper raises awareness of the relationship between copyright and access to knowledge and, in consequence, the need for library organizations to exert influence in such legislation.

Copepod assemblages from two cascade reservoirs were analyzed during two consecutive years. The upstream reservoir (Chavantes) is a storage system with a high water retention time (WRT of 400 days), and the downstream one (Salto Grande) is a run-of-river system with only 1. 5 days WRT. Copepod composition, richness, abundance, and diversity were correlated with the limnological variables and the hydrological and morphometric features. Standard methods were employed for zooplankton sampling and analysis (vertical 50-μm net hauls and counting under a stereomicroscope). Two hypotheses were postulated and confirmed through the data obtained: (1) compartmentalization is more pronounced in the storage reservoir and determines the differences in the copepod assemblage structure; and (2) the assemblages are more homogeneous in the run-of-river reservoir, where the abundance decreases because of the predominance of washout effects. For both reservoirs, the upstream zone is more distinctive. In addition, in the smaller reservoir the influence of the input from tributaries is stronger (turbid waters). Richness did not differ significantly among seasons, but abundance was higher in the run-of-river reservoir during summer. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

Purpose provides a moral compass for young people to apply their strengths and virtues in their lives. Deepen the studies about youth purpose may contribute to the design of new and more efficient moral education strategies, aiming the development of greater citizenship awareness, social justice and youth engagement in the construction of a society based on democracy, justice and social solidarity. This research paper explores the identification of life goals, the beyond the self or self-oriented purpose in life, a meaningful engagement in purposeful activities and the well-being and satisfaction with life in Brazilian youth engaged and not engaged in social and community issues.

The aim of this study was to explore female community health agents’ views about the value of recording qualitative information on contextual health issues they observe during home visits, data that are not officially required to be documented for the Brazilian System of Primary Healthcare Information. Background: The study was conducted in community primary healthcare centres located in the cities of Araçatuba and Coroados (state of São Paulo) and Rio de Janeiro (state of Rio de Janeiro), Brazil. Methods: The design was a qualitative, exploratory study. The purposeful sampling criteria were being female, with a minimum of three years of continuous service in the same location. Data collection with 62 participants was conducted via 11 focus groups (in 2007 and 2008). Audio files were transcribed and submitted to the method of thematic analysis. Four themes guided the analysis: working with qualitative information and undocumented observation; reflecting on qualitative information; integrating/analysing quantitative and qualitative information; and information-sharing with agents and family health teams. In 2010, 25 community health agents verified the final interpretation of the findings. Findings: Participants valued the recording of qualitative, contextual information to expand understanding of primary healthcare issues and as an indicator of clients’ improved health behaviour and health literacy. While participants initiated the recording of additional health information, they generally did not inform the family health team about these findings. They perceived that team members devalued this type of information by considering it a reflection of the clientele’s social conditions or problems beyond the scope of medical concerns. Documentation of qualitative evidence can account for the effectiveness of health education in two ways: by improving preventative care, and by amplifying the voices of underprivileged clients who live in poverty to ensure the most appropriate and best quality primary healthcare for them.

The appropriate use of computer aided technologies, allied to the concepts and design guidelines, grounded in biology, stimulated the development of a solar toilet, able to convert human waste into compost, rich in nutrients for use in gardens, farms and small farms. This transdisciplinary approach is presented as a necessary tool to be used in academia, integrating and developing activities previously disconnected. The solar toilet also called green bathroom, combines the most modern concepts and technologies of computer-aided design, design, selection of materials and microbiological control, reaching biologically correct and safe composting of waste, ensuring the viability of the project terms of cost, deployment, use and environmental safety, such as supporting sustainable development. It is also planned to install a pilot project in a small community with the aim of assessing its implementation and use as a complementary activity and university extension.
