The scaling dependence of the recombination parameter as a function of the ratio between the energies of the atomic dimer and the most excited trimer states was derived. The scaling function tends to a unversal function in the limit of zero-range interaction or infinite scattering length. This paper reports on how one can obtain the trimer binding energy of a trapped atomic system, from the three-body recombination rate and the corresponding two-body scattering length.

Glycerol is widely used as protein stabilizer, in both local and commercial preparations, so it has become necessary to develop methods for mass spectrometric analysis of protein preparations in the presence of glycerol. However, this stabilizing agent may cause signal suppression when present in high concentrations, and is also known to induce protein supercharging even at low concentrations. This work reports the,use of electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry to characterize glycerol-mediated protein oligomerization. this phenomenon seems to involve the formation of strong non-covalent interactions between protein and glycerol involving close contact between the monomers, leading to formation of protein oligomers adducted with glycerol molecules under the characteristic analytical conditions of the ESI interface. At high orders of oligomerization a lower number of glycerol molecules is required to maintain the high oligomeric states than for the dimers and trimers, and it is possible that for the higher oligomers the monomers become so close to one another that non-covalent bonds between the side chains of the amino acid residues in the proteins may be established. The amazonian climber Gnetum venosum contains, besides the stilbenes resveratrol and rapontigentin (3-methoxyresveratrol), oxidative stilbene oligomers such as the dimer gnetin C and the trimers gnetin E, gnetin J (3''-hydroxygnetin E) and gnetin K (3''-methoxygnetin E). Gnetins J and K are described for the first time. Oligomers of stilbenoids constitute a new class of condensed tannins.

The presence of trace neutral organonitrogen compounds as carbazole and indole in derivative petroleum fuels plays an important role in the car's engine maintenance. In addition, these substances contribute to the environmental contamination and their control is necessary because most of them are potentially carcinogenic and mutagenic. For those reasons, a reliable and sensitive method was proposed for the determination of neutral nitrogen compounds in fuel samples, such as gasoline and diesel using preconcentration with modified silica gel (Merck 70-230 mesh ASTM) followed by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) technique on a glassy carbon electrode. The electrochemical behavior of carbazole and indole studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) suggests that their reduction occurs via a reversible electron transfer followed by an irreversible chemical reaction. Very well resolved diffusion controlled voltammetric peaks were obtained in dimethylformamide (DMF) with tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBAF(4) 0.1 mol L-1) for indole (-2.27 V) and carbazole (-2.67 V) versus Ag vertical bar AgCl vertical bar KClsat reference electrode. The proposed DPV method showed a good linear response range from 0.10 to 300 mg L-1 and a limit of detection (L.O.D) of 7.48 and 2.66 mu g L-1 for indole and carbazole, respectively. The results showed that simultaneous determination of indole and carbazole presents in spiked gasoline samples were 15.8 +/- 0.3 and 64.6 +/- 0.9 mg L-1 and in spiked diesel samples were 9.29 +/- 1 and 142 +/- 1 mg L-1, respectively. The recovery was evaluated and the results shown the values of 88.9 +/- 0.4 and 90.2 +/- 0.8% for carbazole and indole in fuel determinations. The proposed method was also compared with UV-vis spectrophotometric measures and the results obtained for the two methods were in good agreement according to the F and t Student's tests. We study the low-energy universality observed in three-body models through a scale-independent approach. From the already estimated infinite number of three-body excited energy states, which happen in the limit when the energy of the subsystem goes to zero, we are able to identify the lower energies of the helium trimers as possible examples of Thomas-Efimov states. By considering this example, we illustrate the usefulness of a scaling function, which we have defined. The approach is applied to bosonic systems of three identical particles, and also to the case where two kinds of particles are present.

Further characterization of hemoglobin of Glossoscolex paulistus (HbGp) subunits was performed based on SDS-PAGE, size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and MALDI-TOF-MS analysis. SDS-PAGE has shown a total of four linker chains, two quite intense and two of lower intensity. HbGp fractions (I-VI), obtained by size exclusion chromatography (SEC), from oligomeric dissociation at alkaline pH 9.6, were monitored. Fraction I is identical to the whole protein. The monomeric chains c, obtained from the trimer abc reduction, present four isoforms with MM 17,336 Da, 17,414 Da, 17,546 Da and 17,620 Da. Furthermore, the trimer subunit presents two isoforms, T 1 and T 2, with MM 51,200 ± 60 and 51,985 ± 50 Da, respectively. Based on SDS-PAGE, the linker chains seem to be distributed along the different fractions of the SEC chromatogram, appearing along the peaks corresponding to fractions I-V. The fraction IV contains, predominantly, trimers with some linkers contamination. The strong interaction of linker chains L with the trimers abc, makes it difficult to obtain these subunits in pure form. The monomer d in fraction VI appears to be quite pure, in agreement with previous studies. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We report recent advances on the study of universal weakly bound four-boson states from the solutions of the Faddeev-Yakubovsky equations with zero-range two-body interactions. In particular, we present the correlation between the energies of successive tetramers between two neighbor Efimov trimers and compare it to recent finite range potential model calculations. We provide further results on the large momentum structure of the tetramer wave function, where the four-body scale, introduced in the regularization procedure of the bound state equations in momentum space, is clearly manifested. The results we are presenting confirm a previous conjecture on a four-body scaling behavior, which is independent of the three-body one. We show that the correlation between the positions of two successive resonant four-boson recombination peaks are consistent with recent data, as well as with recent calculations close to the unitary limit. Systematic deviations suggest the relevance of range corrections. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
