The influence of temperatures on the life parameters of the solitary oothecal parasitoid Evania appendigaster, was investigated in the laboratory. Parasitized oothecae of Periplaneta americana were left to develop under seven constant temperatures: 15, 17, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 degrees C. At the end, we found that: (i) E. appendigaster was able to complete development within the temperature range of 17-34 degrees C; (ii) mean adult longevity decreased as temperature increased, with the temperature of 40 degrees C being fatal in a matter of hours; (iii) males lived longer than females between 15 and 30 degrees C; (iv) adult emergence rate was the highest at 25 degrees C, and (v) no wasps emerged at 15 or 40 degrees C. Non-emerged oothecae contained either unhatched eggs or dead larvae. We determined the theoretical lower developmental threshold and thermal constant for the complete development as 12.9 degrees C and 584.8 day-degrees for males, and 13.1 degrees C and 588.2 day-degrees for females, respectively. A good balance between faster development, maximum adult longevity and good egg viability was obtained between 25-30 degrees C, and that would be the best temperature range for rearing E. appendigaster. Background. Ideal training methods that could ensure best peritoneal dialysis (PD) outcome have not been defined in previous reports. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of training characteristics on peritonitis rates in a large Brazilian cohort.Methods. Incident patients with valid data on training recruited in the Brazilian Peritoneal Dialysis Multicenter Study (BRAZPD II) from January 2008 to January 2011 were included. Peritonitis was diagnosed according to International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis guidelines; incidence rate of peritonitis (episodes/patient-months) and time to the first peritonitis were used as end points.Results. Two thousand two hundred and forty-three adult patients were included in the analysis: 59 +/- 16 years old, 51.8% female, 64.7% with <= 4 years of education. The median training time was 15 h (IQI 10-20 h). Patients were followed for a median of 11.2 months (range 3-36.5). The overall peritonitis rate was 0.29 per year at risk (1 episode/41 patient-months). The mean number of hours of training per day was 1.8 +/- 2.4. Less than 1 h of training/day was associated with higher incidence rate when compared with the intervals of 1-2 h/day (P = 0.03) and > 2 h/day (P = 0.02). Patients who received a cumulative training of > 15 h had significantly lower incidence of peritonitis compared with < 15 h (0.26 per year at risk versus 0.32 per year at risk, P = 0.01). The presence of a caregiver and the number of people trained were not significantly associated with peritonitis incidence rate. Training in the immediate 10 days after implantation of the catheter was associated with the highest peritonitis rate (0.32 per year), compared with training prior to catheter implantation (0.28 per year) or > 10 days after implantation (0.23 per year). More experienced centers had a lower risk for the first peritonitis (P = 0.003).Conclusions. This is the first study to analyze the association between training characteristics and outcomes in a large cohort of PD patients. Low training time (particularly < 15 h), smaller center size and the timing of training in relation to catheter implantation were associated with a higher incidence of peritonitis. These results support the recommendation of a minimum amount of training hours to reduce peritonitis incidence regardless of the number of hours trained per day.

The school culture reveals an organization, over all in terms of the distribution of the contents throughout the different levels of education. However, the Physical Education does not have its contents systemized, that is, there are no clearly definite criteria that can assist the teacher in the curricular organization, as well as, are restricted the didactic books of reference for the area. So, the aim of this study was to try the identification of relevant contents for the teach-learning of the scholar Physical Education pertaining of 1(a) to 4(a) series, as well as, a suggestion to organize these contents in a systemize form, respecting a pedagogical sequence for the indicated series. Field research was carried out, in which was used the practical experience of two of the authors of this article, that are Physical Education teachers, throughout three years. The data were collected by descriptions and daily of field, of the positive experiences lived by the teachers.

Specificity and updating of the bibliographic classification systems can be considered a determinant factor to the quality of organization and representation of the legal documentation. In the specific case of Brazil, the Brazilian Law Decimal Classification, does not foresee specific subdivisions for Labor Law procedures. In this sense, it carries out a terminological work based on table of contents of doctrinal Labor Law books of the mentioned area, which are compared to the conceptual structure of the Brazilian Law Decimal Classification. As a result, it presents an extension proposal for Labor Procedures as well as a methodological background for further extensions and updates.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do fotoperíodo sobre o consumo alimentar, produção e composição do leite (gordura, proteína, lactose, sólidos totais) e número de células somáticas de sete ovelhas da raça Bergamácia, submetidas a um fotoperíodo considerado curto (12 horas luz:12 horas escuro), e oito ovelhas da mesma raça, a um fotoperíodo longo (18 horas luz:6 horas escuro), durante as últimas quatro semanas de gestação e três meses de lactação. Para comparação, foi utilizado o teste t para duas amostras independentes. O consumo alimentar avaliado, diariamente, para cada baia com duas ovelhas, não diferiu entre os tratamentos. No fotoperíodo curto, o consumo médio diário foi de 4,48 kg e, no fotoperíodo longo, de 4,40 kg. Não foi observada diferença significativa entre os fotoperíodos, para a produção de leite e teores de proteína, lactose e sólidos totais, quando considerados os 84 dias de lactação. No fotoperíodo curto, a porcentagem média de gordura foi 5,57%, índice superior ao obtido no fotoperíodo longo, de 5,21%. Na análise dos resultados, a cada semana, notou-se que na segunda e na quarta semanas de lactação, a produção de leite foi maior nas ovelhas do fotoperíodo longo. O número de células somáticas não diferiu entre os fotoperíodos e manteve-se baixo por toda a lactação. O maior número de horas de luz estimula a produção de leite no primeiro mês de lactação, principalmente na quarta semana, e as porcentagens de gordura e sólidos totais são menores nos períodos de maior produção de leite.

The aim of this study was to investigate the students' preferred teaching techniques, such as traditional blackboard, power-point, or slide-projection, for biochemistry discipline in biomedicine and medicine courses from São Paulo State University, UNESP, Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil. Preferences for specific topic and teaching techniques were determined from questionnaires on a Liquert scale from 1 to 5 (strongly disagree; disagree; neither agree, nor disagree; agree; strongly agree) distributed at the end of biochemistry discipline to 180 biomedical students (30 students/year) and 540 medical students (90 students/year), during the years 2000-2005. Despite of the different number of hours applied to the course topics for the two groups of students, the majority of undergraduates from biomedicine and medicine preferred metabolic topics. Although the perception of a medical student is expected to be different than that of a biomedical student, as the aims of the two programs are different, 92.4% of students from each course agreed or strongly agreed with the biochemistry topics, and 92.1% thought highly on this subject. The majority of students, a number of 139 undergraduates from biomedicine and 419 from medicine course, preferred traditional blackboard teaching than slide-projection, or power-point class. In conclusion, it is imperative that the health courses reflect on sophisticated technology and data presentation with high density of information in biochemistry discipline. The traditional classes with blackboard presentation were most favored by students from biomedicine and medicine courses. The use of students' preferred teaching techniques might turn biochemistry more easily understood for biomedical and medical students. © 2007 by The International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
