A espécie Passiflora cincinnata Mast., pertencente à família Passifloraceae, é silvestre e popularmente conhecida como maracujá-do-mato, sendo considerada importante na produção de porta-enxertos, uma vez que é tolerante à seca, a doenças causadas por bactérias e a nematóides, além de poder ser utilizada em programas de melhoramento genético. O trabalho teve como objetivos estudar o efeito da luz e da temperatura e a interação entre temperatura e reguladores vegetais na germinação de sementes de Passiflora cincinnata Mast. Foi constituído de três experimentos: no primeiro, estudou-se o efeito da luz e da temperatura na germinação de sementes; no segundo, o efeito de diferentes concentrações dos reguladores vegetais GA4+7 + N-(fenilmetil)-aminopurina na germinação das sementes e, no terceiro, a interação entre temperatura e reguladores vegetais na germinação das sementes. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado para todos os experimentos e os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e comparação das médias pelo teste Tukey, a 5% de probabilidade. É possível observar que a luz exerce efeito inibitório sobre a germinação das sementes, e que os reguladores vegetais, GA4+7 + N-(fenilmetil)-aminopurina, são eficientes na superação da dormência, além de ampliarem os limites de temperatura da germinação. A temperatura alternada 20-30ºC mostra-se a mais adequada para a germinação de sementes dessa espécie.

One hundred four out of 225 diagnosticated cases were myxosporidian, monogenean, Ichthyophthirius multifiliis Fouquet, 1876 and bacterial diseases in Piaractus mesopotamicus Holmberg, 1887 (pacu), Colossoma macropomum Cuvier, 1818 (tambaqui) and tambacu, at Aquaculture Center, Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), Jaboticabal, São Paulo, Brazil, between 1992 and 1995. The gills were fixed in 10% buffered formalin solution to posterior histologic routine. It was observed Henneguya sp. cysts into the capillaries of the secondary lamellae, encapsulated by the respiratory epithelium cells. It provoked adherence of the adjacent lamellae, hyperplasia, congestion, oedema and epithelium displacement. Monogeneans infestations by Anacanthorus penilabiatus Boeger, Husak & Martins, 1995 and Ancyrocephalinae sub-family caused light inflammatory reaction and hyperplasia. In severe infestations was observed hyperplasia of primary lamellae, necrosis, oedema, respiratory epithelium displacement, ruptured pillar cells and telangiectasis. Response to I. multifiliis was limited to surrounding epithelial cells in young fishes and hyperplasia, necrosis, inflammatory infiltrate and oedema in old fishes. Such lesions iniciate hyperplasic and oedematous process that with inflammation of the parasitic sites, provoked alterations over gases and ions interchange surface and consequently fish metabolism.

This text highlights the state of research related with the application of liposomes in the control of drug delivery and drug target to intracellular bacterial diseases, such as the tuberculosis. Liposome have several pharmaceutical applications and this article is primarily focused on the potential of this agregate on drug encapsalation especially antimycobacterial compounds. Case studies in which liposomes have successfully been used to improve pharmacological drug effect are presented. Mechanisms involved in intracellular drug delivery, possibilities of application, research and development efforts to address these objectives are discussed.

Cold atmospheric plasma treatment of microorganisms and living tissues has become a popular topic in modern plasma physics and in medical science. The plasma is capable of bacterial inactivation and noninflammatory tissue modification, which makes it an attractive tool for treatment of skin diseases, open injuries and dental caries. Because of their enhanced plasma chemistry, Dielectric Barrier Discharges (DBDs) have been widely investigated for some emerging applications such as biological and chemical decontamination of media at ambient conditions. Despite the high breakdown voltage in air at atmospheric pressure, the average current of DBD discharges is low. Therefore, a DBD can be applied in direct contact with biological objects without causing any damage. In this work a 60 Hz DBD reactor, which generates cold atmospheric plasma inside Petri dishes with bacterial culture, is investigated. Samples of Staphylococcus aureus, a Gram-positive bacterium and Escherichia coil a Gram-negative bacterium were selected for this study. The bacterial suspensions were evenly spread on agar media planted in Petri dishes. The reactor electrodes were placed outside the Petri dish, thus eliminating the risk of samples microbial contamination. The covered Petri dish with agar medium in it serves as dielectric barrier during the treatment. The plasma processing was conducted at same discharge power (similar to 1.0 W) with different exposure time. Sterilization of E. coil and S. aureus was achieved for less than 20 min. Propolis is a honeybee product that has been used since ancient times because of its therapeutic effects. It can be used in the development of alternative therapies for the treatment of many diseases, and because propolis shows antibacterial action, this work was carried out in order to investigate a possible synergism between propolis and antibiotics acting on DNA (ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin) and on the metabolism (cotrimoxazole) against Salmonella Typhi. Propolis samples collected in Brazil and Bulgaria were compared in these assays, and the synergism was investigated by using 1/2 and 1/4 of the minimal inhibitory concentration for propolis and antibiotics, evaluating the number of viable cells according to the incubation time. Brazilian and Bulgarian propolis showed antibacterial activity, but no synergistic effects with the three tested antibiotics were seen. Previous works by our laboratory have revealed that propolis has synergistic effects with antibiotics, acting on the bacterial wall and ribosome, but it does not seem to interact with antibiotics acting on DNA or folic acid, and only a bacteriostatic action was seen in these assay conditions.
