Bright blue upconversion emission by thulium ions in PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2 glass triply doped with Nd3+-Tm3+-Yb3+ under diode laser excitation around 800 nm is reported. The results revealed that the Nd3+/Tm3+/Yb3+-codoped sample generated ten times more 475 nm blue upconversion fluorescence than the Yb3+-sensitized Tm3+-doped one, under the same excitation power. The upconversion process also showed a strong dependence upon the Yb3+ concentration. The results also indicated that the neodymium ions played a major role in the upconversion process by transfering the 800 nm excitation to thulium ions. The population of the Tm3+ ions (1)G(4) emitting level was accomplished through a multiion interaction involving ground-state absorption of pump photons around 800 nm by the Nd3+(I-4(9/2)-->H-2(9/2), F-4(5/2)) and Tm3+(H-3(6)-->F-3(4)) ions followed by energy-transfer processes involving the Nd3+-Yb3+(F-4(3/2), F-2(7/2)-->I-4(11/2), F-2(5/2)) and Yb3+-Tm3+(F-2(5/2), F-3(4)-->F-2(7/2), (1)G(4)) pairs. Small angle X-ray scattering measurements, bulk and skeleton density data and an in-situ study by dilatometric thermal analysis about the nanoporosity elimination above 800 degreesC in TEOS sonogels are presented. Apparently, two processes act during the nanoporosity elimination, which precedes the foaming phenomenon often observed in such systems. The first, with an activation energy of (3.9 +/- 0.4) x 10(2) kJ/mol and high frequency factor, is the controlling process of the most nanoporosity elimination at higher temperature. The value of this activation energy is compatible to that for viscous flux throughout densification process in typical silica-based materials. The second, with an activation energy of (49 +/- 5) kJ/mol and low frequency factor, seems to be the controlling process of the first and extremely slow nanoporosity elimination at low temperature.

Background. Despite advances in immunosuppressive therapy in the past decade, allograft rejection remains an important cause of kidney graft failure. Cytokines play a major role in the inflammatory and immune responses that mediate allograft outcomes. Several studies have shown that the production of cytokines varies among individuals. These variations are determined by genetic polymorphisms, most commonly within the regulatory region of cytokine genes. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of allelic variation on acute rejection episodes (ARE) or chronic allograft nephropathy (CAN) after kidney transplantation.Methods. To determine a possible correlation between the interferon (INF)-gamma +874 polymorphism and kidney allograft outcome, we isolated genomic DNA from 74 patients who underwent isolated kidney allografts and were classified into 2 groups-a rejection and a nonrejection group-for comparison with a control group of 163 healthy subjects.Results. We genotyped INF-gamma +874 polymorphisms in all groups. The transplant group showed a significantly increased homozygous genotype T/T (P = .0118) compared with healthy controls. Similarly, considering only patients with CAN, the homozygous genotype T/T (P = .0067) was significantly increased compared with the healthy controls. The rejection group indicated a significant increased homozygous genotype Tic compared with the control group (P = .0061).Conclusion. Homozygous genotype T/T was associated with increased levels of INF-gamma and greater numbers among the rejection and CAN cohorts.

Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, a low virulence mycobacterium, and the outcome of disease is dependent on the host genetics for either susceptibility per se or severity. The IFNG gene codes for interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), a cytokine that plays a key role in host defense against intracellular pathogens. Indeed, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in IFNG have been evaluated in several genetic epidemiological studies, and the SNP +874T > A, the +874T allele, more specifically, has been associated with protection against infectious diseases, especially tuberculosis. Here, we evaluated the association of the IFNG locus with leprosy enrolling 2,125 Brazilian subjects. First, we conducted a case-control study with subjects recruited from the state of So Paulo, using the +874 T > A (rs2430561), +2109 A > G (rs1861494) and rs2069727 SNPs. Then, a second study including 1,370 individuals from Rio de Janeiro was conducted. Results of the case-control studies have shown a protective effect for +874T carriers (OR(adjusted) = 0.75; p = 0.005 for both studies combined), which was corroborated when these studies were compared with literature data. No association was found between the SNP +874T > A and the quantitative Mitsuda response. Nevertheless, the spontaneous IFN-gamma release by peripheral blood mononuclear cells was higher among +874T carriers. The results shown here along with a previously reported meta-analysis of tuberculosis studies indicate that the SNP +874T > A plays a role in resistance to mycobacterial diseases.

We show that Σ+ hyperons produced by 800 GeV/c protons on targets of Be and Cu have significant polarizations (15-20%). These polarizations persist at values of pt = 2 GeV/c and a wide range of xF. The polarizations from the Cu target are consistently less than from Be. The average ratio of the Σ+ polarization from Cu to that from Be is 0.68 ± 0.08.

The nonlinear (NL) optical properties of glassy xBi2O 3-(1-x) GeO2 with x = 0.72 and 0.82 were investigated. The experiments were performed with lasers at 800 nm (pulses of 150 fs) and 532 nm (pulses of 80 ps and 250 ns). Using the Kerr gate technique, we observed that the NL response of the samples at 800 nm is faster than 150 fs. NL refraction indices, | n 2 | ≈ 5 × 10-16 cm2/W, and two-photon absorption coefficients, α 2, smaller than 0.03 cm/GW, were measured at 800 nm. At 532 nm, we measured the NL transmittance of the samples. From the results obtained, we determined α 2 ≈1 cm/GW and excited-state absorption cross-sections of ≈10-22 cm2 due to free-carriers. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

We report on the nonlinear (NL) optical properties of glassy TeO2-GeO2-K2O-Bi2O3 at lambda = 800 nm and lambda = 1,064 nm. Using the Kerr gate technique with a laser delivering 150 fs pulses at 800 nm, we demonstrated the fast NL response of the samples. The modulus of the NL refractive index, n (2), at 800 nm was similar to 10(-15) cm(2)/W. The Z-scan technique was used to determine n (2) a parts per thousand +10(-15) cm(2)/W, at 1,064 nm with pulses of 17 ps. The two-photon absorption coefficient, alpha (2), was smaller than the minimum that we can measure (< 0.003 cm/GW). The figure of merit n (2)/alpha (2) lambda was calculated and indicates that this glass composition has large potential to be used for all-optical switching.

In the second half of the last century the automobile industries suffered from the petroleum crisis caused mainly by the wars in the Middle East. These crises led the automakers rethink their vehicles. One of the most important events after that was the adoption of new steels by the industry. One example is the TRIP steels (Transformationinduced plasticity). It is known that the macroscopic behavior of a material is strongly dependent on its microstructure and therefore the quantitative metallography is important to understand and relate the material properties to its microstructure. In this work, different specimens of TRIP steels were etched using LePera reagent. The obtained images were analyzed using digital processing. Using the ImageJ software the methods threshold and watershed were studied as well as a comparison with the ASTM E562 standard. The methods were compared and finally the morphological characteristics and volumetric fraction of the retained austenite and martensite phases were analyzed. The results showed that the threshold led to a higher number of identified grains with lower mean area and total area fraction than the watershed method and ASTM standard
