The authors presents a clinical case treated with brachytherapy performed with special mold of gold-198 disc, with the purpose of evaluating the distribution of radiation dose, the viability of manufacturing the radioactivity prosthesis and its operational cost. In despite of being only one case, we can conclude that the prosthesis with gold-198 foils can be manufactured in acrylic with thickness thinner than those ones with cylinder of cesium-137, resulting lower operational costs, besides permitting better distribution of radiation dose on the lesion. The purpose of this study was to measure and verify the esthetic influence of the bilateral spaces between maxillary teeth and lip corners, called negative space (NS), during smile. The sample was comprised of 60 smile photographs obtained from 60 individuals (30 men and 30 women) aged 18 to 25 years old. Two orthodontists and two lay people evaluated these pictures regarding esthetics by a visual analogue scale. In each picture, the right and left NS were measured in millimeters and in proportion to the smile width (SW). Data were analyzed for statistical significance (P = .05). The mean NS of the sample was 6.68 ± 1.99 mm, and the NS proportion in relation to the SW was 9.6 ± 2.56%, for both sides of the arch. No significant asymmetries were observed between the right and left sides. The NS was significantly larger in men than in women when measured in millimeters (P = .028) (7.08 ± 2.24 mm in men vs 6.28 ± 1.62 mm in women), but the NS proportion to the SW was similar (9.94 ± 2.24% in men vs 9.26 ± 1.61% in women). When the 12 individuals with the smallest NS in proportion to SW were compared with the 12 individuals with the largest NS in proportion to SW, there was no statistical difference regarding the esthetic evaluation (P = .11). It was concluded that the NS did not influence the esthetic evaluation of smile photographs in the sample in this study, for both orthodontists and lay people. © 2006 by The EH Angle Education and Research Foundation, Inc.

This paper presents a method for indirect orientation of aerial images using ground control lines extracted from airborne Laser system (ALS) data. This data integration strategy has shown good potential in the automation of photogrammetric tasks, including the indirect orientation of images. The most important characteristic of the proposed approach is that the exterior orientation parameters (EOP) of a single or multiple images can be automatically computed with a space resection procedure from data derived from different sensors. The suggested method works as follows. Firstly, the straight lines are automatically extracted in the digital aerial image (s) and in the intensity image derived from an ALS data-set (S). Then, correspondence between s and S is automatically determined. A line-based coplanarity model that establishes the relationship between straight lines in the object and in the image space is used to estimate the EOP with the iterated extended Kalman filtering (IEKF). Implementation and testing of the method have employed data from different sensors. Experiments were conducted to assess the proposed method and the results obtained showed that the estimation of the EOP is function of ALS positional accuracy.

B. ovis pathogenicity was evaluated in experimentally inoculated and naturally infected rams. Ten animals were submitted to simultaneous conjunctival and intrapreputial inoculation with 2x109 CFU/ mL of B. ovis REO 198. After that, animals underwent physical examination and blood samples were collected for serology every week. Positive serology results started to be observed in the 3rd week, with fluctuations in titers. Clinical changes began in the 5th week after inoculation and were associated with positive serology in the acute phase of the disease. Presence of B. ovis in semen and urine culture was intermittent. Three non-inoculated animals showed natural infection. B. ovis was shed twice in semen of one serology-negative animal. The study underscored the pathogenic characteristics of B. ovis REO 198 in Santa Inês rams, as well as the importance of animals as potential sources of infection.

In the 90s, the Brazilian Secretariat of the Special Education Department has expanded the democratization of education and pupils’ access to schooling, by redefi ning the operation of special education services. With this inclusion policy, the education system has been restructured. An important action, conducted during the period de 2005 to 2010, was to propose, deploy and implement Multifunctional Resources Rooms (Sala de recursos multifuncionais, or SRM), from two different types (type I and II). The challenge was to promote educational inclusion, in a program entitled Inclusive Education: the right to diversity. In a seek for new identity of teacher training and professional practice in special education, the great educational innovation is to better articulate the work of “ordinary“ and specialized teachers, via the SRM, and to develop collective and participatory actions between common spaces and support spaces. In this context, the school and the family represent an important source of partnership.

Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic mycosis which requires prolonged treatment. It is highest prevalence in Latin America, with different endemic areas in Brazil. In this study the aim was to characterize clients suffering from mucocutaneous paracoccidioidomycosis by analysis of histopathological examinations of 61 adult patients diagnosed with mucocutaneous paracoccidioidomycosis treated at the Dental School of Araçatuba, from January 1989 to December 2004. It was observed that the disease occurred in 91.81% (56) men and 8.19% (5) women, more prevalent (78.68%) in whites, aged 40 to 59 years (62.9%) and the profession linked to agriculture in 17 patients (27.86%). All patients had oral manifestations, in multiple sites, but it was most prevalent in the oral mucosa (31.42%) and alveolar ridge (17.14%). The dentist as an integral member of the health services, must know the clinical manifestations of paracoccidioidomycosis to achieve early diagnosis and thereby to improve the quality of life of patients.
