An experimentally based kinetic and mechanistic study of the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) on platinum and platinum ordered intermetallic materials in acid medium is presented. RDE kinetic data were re-evaluated and complemented by Tafel plots obtained from chronoamperometric measurements. Among the materials evaluated, PtSb and PtSn exhibited markedly improved kinetic current densities and exchange current densities, compared to Pt in the same experimental conditions. It is proposed that the intermetallic phase enhanced the adsorptive characteristic of the surface sites and, as a consequence, improved the kinetics of the adsorption steps (Tafel or Heyrovsky) of the mechanism involved. Inadequate dialysis causes accumulation of toxic residues that may lead to the development of dialysis-associated pericardial effusion, but several other factors could be associated with this abnormality. The purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical risk factors to asymptomatic pericardial effusion in peritoneal dialysis. This cross-sectional study included 34 patients aged a parts per thousand yen18 years on peritoneal dialysis for at least 3 months, who showed no symptomatic pericardial effusion, hepatic cirrhosis, neoplasias, lupus or amputations, none in minoxidil use. Asymptomatic pericardial effusion was diagnosed by echocardiography. Risk factors were evaluated by logistic regression and Roc curve. Significance level was set at P < 0.05.Patient age was 51 +/- A 15.9 years. of the 34 patients enrolled, 16 were men and 11 diabetic. Five of them presented pericardial effusion. Logistic regression identifies low hemoglobin level (RR 0.454 CI 95%: 0.225-0.913; P = 0.027), low phase angle (RR 0.236 CI 95%: 0.057-0.984; P = 0.048) and low Kt/V (RR 0.001 CI 95%: 0.0-0.492; P = 0.03) as risk factors to pericardial effusion. Roc curve showed that hemoglobin levels below 12.2 g/dL, Kt/V lower than 1.9 and phase angle lower than 4.5A degrees were the best cutoffs to predict pericardial effusion. Four patients showed these three parameters in the unfavorable range, and all these four patients presented pericardial effusion. The other patient with pericardial effusion had two of these parameters reduced. These findings corroborate the hypothesis that uremia plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of dialysis-associated pericardial effusion.

In order to determine if patients with a history of previous urothelial cell carcinoma (UCC) but with current normal urinary cytology have DNA damage in urothelial cells, the single-cell gel electrophoresis (comet) assay was conducted with cells obtained by urinary bladder washings from 44 patients (28 with a history of previous UCC). Increased DNA damage was observed in cytologically normal urothelial cells of patients with a history of UCC when compared with referents with no similar history and after correcting the data for smoking status and age (P < 0.018). Increased DNA damage also correlated with the highest tumor grade, irrespective of time or course of the disease after clinical intervention (Kendall tau correlation, 0.37, P = 0.016). Moreover, aneuploidy, as assessed by DNA content ratio (DCR; 75th/25th percentile of total DNA fluorescence of 50 comets/patient) was unaltered by smoking status, but increased with UCC grade: 1.39 +/- 0.12 (median +/- 95% confidence interval; referents); 1.43 +/- 0.11 (Grade I UCC; P = 0.264, against referents); 1.49 +/- 0.16 (Grade II UCC; P = 0.057); 1.57 +/- 0.16 (Grade III UCC; P = 0.003). Micronucleated urothelial cells (MNC) were also scored on Giemsa-stained routine cytological smears and were found not to correlate with DNA damage or DCR. MNC frequencies were higher for patients with a history of UCC and/or smoking than referents with neither history, but there was no statistical difference between groups. Taken together, these results suggest that the normal-appearing urothelium of patients resected for UCC still harbor genetically unstable cells. (C) 2002 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Coral snakes in the genus Micrurus are widely distributed in the Neotropics, with more than 50 species already described in this region. They are primarily ground or leaf litter dwellers, feed on snakes or other elongate vertebrates, and tend to reproduce during the rainy season. We present data on the biology of Micrurus pyrrhocryptus from two semideciduous forests of Mato Grosso do Sul state, western Brazil. Two snake species were consumed: the dipsadid Sibynomorphus lavillai and the typhlopid Typhlops brongersmianus. Sexual dimorphism is marked in M. pyrrhocryptus. with males attaining larger sizes and having longer tails. Activity was concentrated in the wet season, when reproduction occurs. The defensive behavior in this species is similar to that displayed by other Micron's, although less pronounced.

We describe a new species of Ischnocnema from Santa Teresa, in the Atlantic Rainforest of the State of Espirito Santo, Brazil. Ischnocnema abdita sp. nov. is a member of the Ischnocnema lactea species series; it differs from other Ischnocnema mainly by presenting small size (adult male SVL 15.7 [plus or minus] 0.49 mm; range 15.0-16.8 mm); small discs on fingers I and II, and elliptical, wider than long, moderate sized discs on fingers III and IV; and finger I slightly smaller than finger II. The new species closely resembles Ischnocnema bolbodactyla, differing from it by presenting upper and lower margins of iris red in life; inguinal region with many yellow blotches in life; posterior region of belly and ventral surfaces of thighs, shanks, and feet roughly marbled with large pale yellow blotches; and hidden dorsal area of thighs dark brown with few large pale yellow blotches.

We determined microhabitat and diet niche for tadpoles from two ponds in an agricultural landscape. Additionally, we verified the intraspecific variation in resource use, and if diet and microhabitat use were correlated. Tadpoles found in the two ponds differed in microhabitat use, because in the larger pond they explored deeper places far from the margin. There were three groups with high microhabitat niche overlap. In both ponds, plant cover was the best descriptor to explain interspecific variation in microhabitat use. Tadpoles of all species ingested mainly Bacillariophyceae and Trachellomonas however the diet differed intraspecifically in the species from the two ponds. Ten items in the temporary pond and 15 items in the permanent one were ingested by all species; however, the relative abundance of each item differed. Diet similarity was not correlated to similarity in microhabitat use. In this study, diet was as important as microhabitat use to explain resource partitioning.

Scattering of ortho positronium (Ps) by cesium and rubidium atoms has been investigated employing a three-Ps-state coupled-channel model with Ps(1s,2s,2p) states using a time-reversal-symmetric regularized electron-exchange model potential. We find a narrow S-wave singlet resonance at 5.057 eV of width 0.003 eV in the Ps-Rb system and at 5.067 eV of width 0.003 eV in the Ps-Cs system. Singlet P-wave resonances in both systems are found at 5.3 eV of width 0.4 eV. Singlet D-wave structures are found at 5.4 eV in both systems. The pronounced P- and D-wave resonances in these systems lead to easily detectable local minima in the low-energy elastic cross sections. We also report results for elastic and Ps-excitation cross sections for Pa scattering by Rb and Cs. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

We present a measurement of the fraction f(+) of right-handed W bosons produced in top quark decays, based on a candidate sample of tt events in the l + jets and dilepton decay channels corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 370 pb(-1) collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp Collider at root s = 1.96 TeV. We reconstruct the decay angle theta* for each lepton. By comparing the cos theta* distribution from the data with that for the expected background and signal for various values of f(+) (where we assume that the fraction of longitudinally-polarized W bosons has the standard model value of 0.70), we find f(+) = 0.056 +/- 0.080 (stat) +/- 0.057 (syst) (f(+) < 0.23 at 95% C. L.), consistent with the standard model prediction of f(+) = 3.6 X 10(-4).
