PbTiO3 thin films were deposited on Si(100) via hybrid chemical method and crystallized between 400 and 700 degreesC to study the effect of the crystallization kinetics on structure and microstructure of these materials. X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique was used to study the structure of the crystallized films. In the temperature range investigated, the lattice strain (c/a) presented a maximum value (c/a = 1.056) for film crystallized at 600 degreesC for I h. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used in investigation of the microstructure of the films. The rms roughness of the films linearly increases with temperature and ranged from 1.25 to 9.04 nm while the grain sizes ranged from 130.6 to 213.6 nm. Greater grain size was observed for film crystallized at 600 degreesC for 1 h. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. S.A. All rights reserved.

A comparison of the thermal regime and oxygen distribution patterns of some Brazilian reservoirs was made. A strong latitudinal dependence of surface temperature, annual mean and annual range was found. Except for Tucurui Reservoir, a reservoir of the Equatorial zone, the lowest surface temperature of the year in the other compared reservoirs was observed from June to August while the highest extended from October to February. The decreasing trend of annual mean temperatures and thermal ranges was due to the increasing seasonal variability of insolation with the latitude. A positive relationship between the increase on thermal surface-bottom differences and the depth of water column was found for reservoirs of similar latitudes. A long thermal stratification (around four months) was evidenced in the lacustrine zone of reservoirs with a residence time higher than 40 days. Low fluctuation (<2%) of the annual variability of heat contents was observed for the Tucurui Reservoir, while in das Garcas Reservoir a manmade lake located in the frontier between tropical and temperate regions, the annual coefficient of variation attained 13%. Concerning the heat budgets, the value for the Tucurui Reservoir was two times higher than in das Garcas Reservoir. Both the morphometric and climatological factors affected the heat contents of the two compared reservoirs. In deep eutrophic reservoirs, a significant reduction on the oxygen concentrations in the hypolimnetic zone was frequently observed. In some oligotrophic stratified reservoirs, a decrease on oxygen with depth occurred when the temperature of the hypolimnion was higher than 20 degrees C and caused a biochemical oxygen demand. In das Garcas Reservoir, the actual oxygen deficits ranged from 0.40 to 1.52 mg.O-2.cm(-2) and appear to be linked to oxygen consumption after the senescence of Microcystis aeruginosa populations in the spring. But, other factors such as the allochthonous loads of organic matter also had an important role on the oxygen balance of das Garcas Reservoir.

It is known that the dielectric properties of BaTiO3 (BT) are strongly dependent on its grain size. Coarse-grained ceramics of pure BT showed lower dielectric constant at room temperature then fine grained. Many authors considered that when the grain size is lower than 700 nm, the lattice of BT changes from tetragonal to pseudocubic, and the dielectric constant value is very low. In the doped BT this effect is more complex, because it is necessary to consider also the influence of dopants. The grain size effect on the structure and dielectric properties of niobium-doped barium titanate was investigated. Niobium-doped barium titanate was prepared from powders obtained by doping of commercial barium titanate and from organometallic complex using citrates as precursors (Pechini procedure). The crystal and microstructure of sintered niobium-doped barium titanate were determined. Dielectric constant and dissipation factor were measured. The observation confirmed that the structure and properties are strongly dependent on grain size. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The structure and the ionic conduction properties of siloxane-poly(oxypropylene) (PPO) hybrids doped with different potassium salts (KCF3SO3, KI, KClO4 and KNO2) are reported for two polymer molecular weights (300 and 4000 g/mol), labelled PPO300 and PPO4000, respectively. The doping concentration, related to the concentration of the ether type oxygen of the PPO chain, is the same whatever the salt and verifies [O]/[K] = 20. Ionic room temperature conductivity shows the highest value for the KCF3SO3 doped PPO4000 hybrid (4 x 10(-7)Omega(-1).cm(-1)). The structure of these hybrids was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS and XANES) at the potassium K-edge (3607 eV). XRPD results show that the hybrid matrix is always amorphous and the formation of secondary potassium phases is observed for all the samples, except for the KCF3SO3 doped PPO4000 hybrid. EXAFS results evidence a good correlation between the ionic conductivity and the presence of oxygen atoms as first neighbours around potassium.

In this paper, a combined theoretical and experimental study on the electronic structure and photoluminescence (PL) properties of beta zinc molybdate-ZnMoO4) microcrystals synthesized by the hydrothermal method has been employed. These crystals were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinement, Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopies. Their optical properties were investigated by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy and PL measurements. First-principles quantum mechanical calculations based on the density functional theory at the B3LYP level have been carried out. XRD patterns, Rietveld refinement, FT-Raman and FT-IR spectra showed that these crystals have a wolframite-type monoclinic structure. The Raman and IR frequencies experimental results are in reasonable agreement with theoretically calculated results. UV-Vis absorption measurements shows an optical band gap value of 3.17 eV, while the calculated band structure has a value of 3.22 eV. The density of states indicate that the main orbitals involved in the electronic structure of β-ZnMoO4 crystals are (O 2p-valence band and Mo 4d-conduction band). Finally, PL properties of β-ZnMoO4 crystals are explained by means of distortions effects in octahedral [ZnO6] and [MoO6] clusters and inhomogeneous electronic distribution into the lattice with the electron density map. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. The influence of current density, at the interval 5-100 mA cm-2, on the structural and magnetic properties of electrodeposited (Co 100-xNix)100-yWy alloys (x = 23-33.5 at. % Ni, y = 1.7-7.3 at. % W) was studied from a glycine-containing bath. W-content decreases with the increase of the current density magnitude. X-ray data have shown stabilization of hexagonal close packed, face centered cubic or a mixture of these structures by modulating the applied cathodic current density, for values lower than 50 mA cm-2. Two structural phase transitions were observed: one from hexagonal close packed to face centered cubic structural transition occurring for a current density of 20 mA cm -2, and another one, from cubic crystalline phase to amorphous state, which happens for values higher than 50 mA cm-2. These structural phase transitions seem to be associated with the W-content as well as average crystalline grain sizes that reduce with increasing the current density value. The grain size effect may explain the face centered cubic stabilization in Co-rich CoNiW alloys, which was initially assumed to be basically due to H-adsorption/incorporation. Magnetic properties of Co-rich CoNiW alloys are strongly modified by the current density value; as a result of the changes on the W-content and their structural properties© 2013 Elsevier B.V. The structure and the kinetics of formation of APTS/GPTS-derived organic/inorganic hybrids were studied in situ by small-angle-X-ray scattering. The data were interpreted in terms of a process of primary particles formation and growth of mass-fractal clusters. At the very early stage, the population of the nonfractal primary particles (D = 3) increases with time. As the mass-fractal clusters appear (D < 3) as a result of the aggregation process, the radius of gyration, Rg, of the clusters increases on average. At advanced stages of aggregation, the clusters grow in a mechanism in which the number of particles per clusters increases while the number of clusters diminishes with time, in such a way that the correlation volume of the clusters, Vc, fulfills the relationship Vc â̂ R g D, in agreement with a mass-fractal character of the clusters. These results supporting a cluster-cluster aggregation process, together with the typically very low value found for the mass-fractal dimension D, are in favor of a diffusion-controlled cluster aggregation mechanism. © 2013 American Chemical Society.
