In Experiment 1, effects of an intravaginal progesterone insert (CIDR) for synchronization of estrus in non-suckled cycling primiparous Bos indicus beef cows were evaluated. Cows received either no treatment (Control), prostaglandin F(2 alpha) (PGF), or CIDR (6 d)+prostaglandin F(2 alpha) (CIDR+PGF). There were greater (P<0.05) percentages of cows inseminated and pregnant in 4 d of breeding season in CIDR+PGF (81.6%; 48.7%) than in PGF (53.8%; 32.5%) and Control cows (14.6%; 8.5%). In Experiment 2, efficacy of a treatment with CIDR (6 d)+prostaglandin F(2 alpha)+48 h temporary weaning (CIDR+PGF+TW) associated or not with equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) for synchronization of estrus in suckled primiparous B. indicus beef cows was evaluated. Cows were assigned to receive either no treatment (Control), CIDR+PGF+TW, CIDR+PGF+TW+200 IU of eCG, or CIDR+PGF+IW+400 IU of eCG. There were greater (P<0.05) percentages of insemination and pregnancy in 4 d of breeding season in treatment groups (47.0%; 27.5%) than in Control cows(4.5%; 3.0%) and in cows treated with eCG (50.9%; 29.4%) than in cows treated only with CIDR+PGF+TW (39.4%: 23.7%). No effects of eCG dosage were detected. The percentage of cows inseminated and pregnant in a 30 d breeding season were greater (P<0.05) in cows assigned to synchronization treatments (53.3%; 37.2%) than in Control cows (35.3%; 21.4%). In the beginning of the BS, non-suckled primiparous cows treated with CIDR+PGF with estrous cycles having been initiated following calving had greater estrous detection and pregnancy rates than PGF and Control cows, and suckled primiparous cows had improved estrous detection and pregnancy rates when eCG was associated with CIDR+PGF+TW. Background: Very limited information is available from in vivo studies about whether smoking and/or nicotine affect gingival tissues in the absence of plaque. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of the systemic administration of nicotine in the proliferation and counting of fibroblast-like cells in the gingival tissue of rats. Methods: Thirty adult male Wistar rats were randomly assigned into two groups to receive subcutaneous injections of a saline solution (control group = group C) or nicotine solution (group N; 3 mg/kg) twice a day. The animals were euthanized 37, 44, or 51 days after the first subcutaneous injection. Specimens were routinely processed for serial histologic sections. Five fields of view in the connective tissue adjacent to the gingival epithelium and above the alveolar bone crest of the maxillary first molar were selected for the counting of fibroblast-like cells. Data were statistically analyzed (P<0.05).Results: The intergroup analysis detected a lower number of fibroblast-like cells in group N compared to group C on days 37 (2.65 +/- 1.41 and 6.67 +/- 3.25, respectively), 44 (2.70 +/- 1.84 and 8.57 +/- 2.37, respectively), and 51(2.09 +/- 1.41 and 7.49 +/- 2.60, respectively) (P<0.05). The quantification of fibroblast-like cells showed no significant difference (P >0.05) in the intragroup analysis of control and nicotine throughout experimental periods. In the intergroup analysis, group N had reduced proliferating cell nuclear antigen positive fibroblasts compared to group C in all periods (P<0.05).Conclusion: The daily systemic administration of nicotine negatively affected, in vivo, the number and proliferation of fibroblast-like cells in the gingival tissue of rats. In the present experiments we investigated a possible involvement of imidazoline receptors of the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus on the presser effects of the angiotensin LI (ANG II) injected into the subfornical organ (SFO), in male Holtzman rats (250-300 g) with a cannula implanted into the third ventricle (3rdV), PVN and SFO. At first we tested the participation of alpha(2) and imidazoline agonist and antagonist compounds on the presser effect of ANG II injected into the 3rdV. Based on the results we may conclude that clonidine associated with rilmenidine was able to block the hypertensive response to ANG IT. The ANG II (20 pmol) injected into SFO induced a robust increase in blood pressure (37 +/- 2 mmHg). Isotonic saline (0.15 M) NaCl did not produce any change in blood pressure (5 +/- 2 mmHg). The injection of rilmenidine (30 mu g/kg/l mu L), an imidazoline agonist agent injected into PVN before ANG II injection into SFO, blocked the presser effect of ANG II (5 +/- 2 mmHg). Also, the injection of idazoxan (60 mu g/kg/mu L) before rilmenidine blocked the inhibitory effect of rilmenidine on blood pressure (39 +/- 4 mmHg). The injection of clonidine (20 nmol/mu L) prior to ANG II into the 3rdV produced a decreased in arterial blood pressure (37 +/- 2 mmHg) to (15 +/- 4 mmHg). The injection of yohimbine (80 nmol/mu L) prior to clonidine blocked the effect of clonidine on the effect of ANG II (27 +/- 2 mmHg). The injection of rilmenidine prior to ANG TI also induced a decrease in arterial blood pressure (10 +/- 3 mmHg). The injection of idazoxan prior to rilmenidine also blocked the inhibitory effect of rilmenidine (24 +/- 3 mmHg). In summary, the present study demonstrated that rilmenidine decreases the hypertensive effect of ANG II, with more potency than clonidine, even when injected into 3rdV or PVN. This study established that the PVN interacts with SFO by imidazoline receptors in order to control the arterial blood pressure. (C) Elsevier, Paris.

The central injection of clonidine (an alpha-2-adrenoceptor agonist) in conscious normotensive rats produces hypertensive responses and bradycardia. The present study was performed to investigate the effect of electrolytic lesions in the anteroventral third ventricle (AV3V) region or in the lateral hypothalamus (LH) on the pressor and bradycardic responses induced by central clonidine in rats. Mean arterial pressure and heart rate were recorded in sham or AV3V-lesioned rats with cerebral stainless steel cannulae implanted into the lateral cerebral ventricle (ICV) or LH. and in sham or bilateral LH-lesioned rats with cannulae-implanted ICV. The injection of clonidine (40 nmol) ICV or into the LH of sham rats produced a pressor response (37 +/- 2-48 +/- 3 mmHg) and bradycardia (-45 +/- 10--93 +/- 6 bpm). After AV3V-lesion (3 and 12 days) or LH-lesion (3 days) the pressor response was abolished and a small hypotensive response was induced by the injection of clonidine (-1 +/- 3--16 +/- 3 mmHg). The bradycardia (-27 +/- 6--57 +/- 11 bpm) was reduced, but not abolished by the lesions. These results show that the AV3V region and LH are important cerebral structures that participate in the excitatory pathways involved in the pressor response to central clonidine in rats. They also suggest that, in the absence of these pressor pathways, the hypotensive responses to central clonidine may appear in conscious rats.

This is the first report of the interaction between the two entomophagous agents Mantispa minuta Fabricius (Mantispidae) and Parawixia bistriata Rengger, an orb-weaver spider (Araneidae). From egg sacs kept in the laboratory we observed the emergence of adult neuropterans followed by the emergence of a high number of spiderlings. This association illustrates the interactions among the invertebrate predators coexisting in Eucalyptus plantations managed without chemical treatment, in the State of São Paulo, Brazil.

This investigation evaluated the effectiveness of an infection control protocol for cleansing and disinfecting removable dental prostheses. Sixty-four dentures were rubbed with sterile cotton swab immediately after they had been taken from patients' mouths. Samples were individually placed in the culture medium and immediately incubated at 37 +/- 2 degreesC. The dentures were scrubbed for 1 min with 4% chlorhexidine, rinsed for 1 min in sterile water and placed for 10 min in one of the following immersion solutions: 4% chlorhexidine gluconate, 1% sodium hypochlorite, Biocide (iodophors) and Amosan (alkaline peroxide). After the disinfection procedures, the dentures were immersed in sterile water for 3 min, reswabbed and the samples were incubated. All samples obtained in the initial culture were contaminated with micro-organisms. All the lower dentures immersed in Biocide showed positive growth, and the upper dentures were positive for growth in six of eight dentures. The 4% chlorhexidine gluconate, 1% sodium hypochlorite and Amosan solutions have been proved effective to reduce the growth of the micro-organisms in the 10 min immersion period. The protocol evaluated in this study seems to be a viable method to prevent cross-contamination between dental personnel and patients.

The reproduction and activity of Dipsas albifrons (Sauvage, 1884) from the southern Atlantic Forest, Brazil, were studied by analysing 144 preserved specimens. Females attained larger body sizes than males. Contrary to other Dipsadini of lower latitudes, reproduction in D, albifrons is seasonal with vitellogenesis and oviposition occurring in the rainy season and the hatching of the juveniles occurring at the end of the rainy season. Similar to other Dipsadini, clutch size in D. albifrons is relatively small, ranging from one to eight eggs. Clutch size was significantly, correlated to female body size. Adult males and females showed a bimodal activity pattern. Seasonal variation in climate, reproductive cycles and feeding are considered to be the main factors responsible for the observed activity trend.

The criteria for the occurrence of roll wave phenomenon in the supercritical and turbulent Newtonian and non-Newtonian flows from the engineering point of view was analyzed. Imposing a constant discharge at the upstream of the canal and superposing a small perturbation, it was observed that roll waves can be developed more easily for small wave numbers and for high cohesions. Moreover, from the mathematical model used, it was demonstrated that the numerical viscosity was 10 times the physical viscosity.
