Tissue Vitamin A Insufficiency Results in Adverse Ventricular Remodeling after Experimental Myocardial Infarction

Background/Aims: The role of tissue vitamin-A insufficiency on post-infarction ventricular remodeling is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that cardiac vitamin A insufficiency on post-infarction is associated with adverse myocardial remodeling. Methods: After infarction, rats were allocated into two groups: C (controls, n=25); VA (dietary vitamin A restriction, n= 26). After 3 months, the animals were submitted to echocardiogram, morphometric and biochemical analysis. Results: Rats fed the vitamin-A-deficient diet had lower heart and liver retinol concentration and normal plasma retinol. There were no differences in infarct size between the groups. VA showed higher diastolic left ventricular area normalised by body weight (C= 1.81 +/- 0.4 cm2/kg, VA= 2.15 +/- 0.3 cm2/kg; p=0.03), left ventricular diameter (C= 9.4 +/- 1.4 mm, VA= 10.5 +/- 1.2 mm; p=0.04), but similar systolic ventricular fractional area change (C= 33.0 +/- 10.0 %, VA= 32.1 +/- 8.7 %; p=0.82). VA showed decreased isovolumetric relaxation time normalised by heart rate (C= 68.8 +/- 11.4 ms, VA= 56.3 +/- 16.8 ms; p=0.04). VA showed higher interstitial collagen fraction (C= 2.8 +/- 0.9 %, VA= 3.7 +/- 1.1 %; p=0.05). There were no differences in myosin heavy chain expression, metalloproteinase 2 and 9 activation, or IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha cardiac levels. Herein we report predation by the spider Lycosa erythrognatha on a newly metamorphosed anuran Rhinella ornata, observed in an aggregation of more than 50 individuals.

Produtividade em colônias de Polistes (Ap hanilopterus) vers icolor Olivier, 1791 (Hymenoptera: Vespidae, Polis tinae)

From August 2000 to December 2003, 185 colonies of Polistes versicolor were observed at the Bioterio of the Instituto de Biociencias, UNESP, Campus de Rio Claro, SP. In 144 colonies (77,84%) didn't emerge wasps, and of others 41 (22,16%), in 16 it was not possible to obtain the number of meconia, because they were attacked in several degrees of injury by natural enemies such as, ants, birds and parasitic wasps. The colonies productivity was measured through the meconia count in the cells of 25 colonies, which ranged from 1 to 6 meconia by cell.

Use of the freshwater crab Trichodactylus fluviatilis to biomonitoring Al and Mn contamination in river water.

Determinations of Al and Mn concentrations in the tissues (gills, hepatopancreas and muscle) of the freshwater crab Trichodactylus fluviatilis and water samples, both collected from sites on tributaries of the Corumbatai River (São Paulo, Brazil) were performed. The Bioaccumulation Factor (BAF), calculated for different sites with respect to the water concentration, ranged from 173-555 for Al and from 636 - 921 for Mn. Dissolved concentrations of Al and Mn in water samples (collected in different sites) were related to the accumulation of these metals in crabs, suggesting that T. fluviatilis is good biomonitor for Al and Mn pollution in aquatic ecosystem.

An approach using Lagrangian/surrogate relaxation for lot-sizing with transportation costs

Neste trabalho estuda-se um problema de dimensionamento de lotes e distribuição que envolve além de custos de estoques, produção e preparação, custos de transportes para o armazém da empresa. Os custos logísticos estão associados aos contêineres necessários para empacotar os produtos produzidos. A empresa negocia um contrato de longo prazo onde um custo fixo por período é associado ao transporte dos itens, em contrapartida um limite de contêineres é disponibilizado com custo mais baixo que o custo padrão. Caso ocorra um aumento ocasional de demanda, novos contêineres podem ser utilizados, no entanto, seu custo é mais elevado. Um modelo matemático foi proposto na literatura e resolvido utilizando uma heurística Lagrangiana. No presente trabalho a resolução do problema por uma heurística Lagrangiana/surrogate é avaliada. Além disso, é considerada uma extensão do modelo da literatura adicionando restrições de capacidade e permitindo atraso no atendimento a demanda. Testes computacionais mostraram que a heurística Lagrangiana/surrogate é competitiva especialmente quando se têm restrições de capacidade apertada.
