Fatigue, corrosion and wear resistance are important parameters in aircraft components development as landing gear. High strength/weight ratio and effective corrosion resistance make of titanium alloys an alternative choice to replace steel and aluminum alloys. However, titanium alloys have poor tribological properties, which reduce devices performance under friction. PVD coatings tribological systems has been increased due to their attractive mechanical properties as low environmental impact, low friction coefficient, low wear rate and hardness up to 2000 HV.In this study the influence of TiN deposited by PVD on the fatigue strength of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was evaluated. Comparison of fatigue strength of coated specimens and base material shows also a decrease when parts are coated. It was observed that the influence is more significant in high cycle fatigue tests. Scanning electron microscopy technique (SEM) was used to observe crack origin sites and fracture features. (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

This paper presents the linear optimal control technique for reducing the chaotic movement of the micro-electro-mechanical Comb Drive system to a small periodic orbit. We analyze the non-linear dynamics in a micro-electro-mechanical Comb Drive and demonstrated that this model has a chaotic behavior. Chaos control problems consist of attempts to stabilize a chaotic system to an equilibrium point, a periodic orbit, or more general, about a given reference trajectory. This technique is applied in analyzes the nonlinear dynamics in an MEMS Comb drive. The simulation results show the identification by linear optimal control is very effective.

This work aimed at evaluating the aggressive response of Polybia sericea, incited by mechanical means, as well as collecting information on the biological and population parameters of this species in Caatinga environments. There were positive correlations (P < 0.05) between the number of aggressors and the number of eggs, larvae and adults present in the nests. These results showed that the magnitude of the defense response exhibited by P. sericea is proportional to the energetic investment carried out by the colony in making young forms. The positive significant correlation between the number of aggressors and the total number of adults of the colony corroborates the hypothesis that colonies with a large population of adults have greater potential to perform what is called defensive altruism.

In this paper we consider a self-excited mechanical system by dry friction in order to study the bifurcational behavior of the arisen vibrations. The oscillating system consists of a mass block-belt-system which is self-excited by static and Coulomb friction. We analyze the system behavior numerically through bifurcation diagrams, phase portraits, frequency spectra and Poincare maps, which show the existence of nonhomoclinic and homoclinic chaos and a route to homoclinic chaos. The homoclinic chaos is also analyzed analytically via the Melnikov prediction method. The system dynamic is characterized by the existence of two potential wells in the phase plane which exhibit rich bifurcational and chaotic behavior.

The investigation of the behavior of a nonlinear system consists in the analysis of different stages of its motion, where the complexity varies with the proximity of a resonance region. Near this region the stability domain of the system undergoes sudden changes due basically to competition and interaction between periodic and saddle solutions inside the phase portrait, leading to the occurrence of the most different phenomena. Depending of the domain of the chosen control parameter, these events can reveal interesting geometric features of the system so that the phase portrait is not capable to express all them, since the projection of these solutions on the two-dimensional surface can hide some aspects of these events. In this work we will investigate the numerical solutions of a particular pendulum system close to a secondary resonance region, where we vary the control parameter in a restrict domain in order to draw a preliminary identification about what happens with this system. This domain includes the appearance of non-hyperbolic solutions where the basin of attraction in the center of the phase portrait diminishes considerably, almost disappearing, and afterwards its size increases with the direction of motion inverted. This phenomenon delimits a boundary between low and high frequency of the external excitation.

This paper concerns a type of rotating machine (centrifugal vibrator), which is supported on a nonlinear spring. This is a nonideal kind of mechanical system. The goal of the present work is to show the striking differences between the cases where we take into account soft and hard spring types. For soft spring, we prove the existence of homoclinic chaos. By using the Melnikov's Method, we show the existence of an interval with the following property: if a certain parameter belongs to this interval, then we have chaotic behavior; otherwise, this does not happen. Furthermore, if we use an appropriate damping coefficient, the chaotic behavior can be avoided. For hard spring, we prove the existence of Hopf's Bifurcation, by using reduction to Center Manifolds and the Bezout Theorem (a classical result about algebraic plane curves).

The correlation between experimental data and theoretical calculations have been investigated to explain the photoluminescence at room temperature of Ba(Ti0.75Zr0.25)O-3 (BTZ) thin films prepared by the polymeric precursor method. The degree of structural order-disorder was investigated by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. First-principles quantum mechanical calculations based on density functional theory (B3LYP level) were employed to study the electronic structure of ordered and deformed asymmetric models. The electronic properties are analyzed and the relevance of the present theoretical and experimental results on the PL behavior is discussed. The presence of localized electronic levels and a charge gradient in the band gap due to a break in symmetry, are responsible for the PL in disordered BTZ lattice. (c) 2007 Acta Materialia Inc. OBJECTIVE: To assess the behavior of cardiac variables in animals exposed to cigarette smoke. METHODS: Two groups of Wistar rats were studied as follows: control group (C), comprising 28 animals; and smoking group (S), comprising 23 animals exposed to cigarette smoke for 30 days. Left ventricular cardiac function was assessed in vivo with transthoracic echocardiography, and myocardial performance was analyzed in vitro in preparations of isolated left ventricular papillary muscle. The cardiac muscle was assessed in isometric contractions with an extracellular calcium concentration of 2.5 mmol/L. RESULTS: No statistical difference was observed in the values of the body variables of the rats and in the mechanical data obtained from the papillary muscle between the control and smoking groups. The values of left ventricular systolic diameter were significantly greater in the smoking animals than in the control animals (C= 3.39 ± 0.4 mm and S= 3.71 ± 0.51 mm, P=0.02). A significant reduction was observed in systolic shortening fraction (C= 56.7 ± 4.2% and S= 53.5 ± 5.3%, P=0.02) and in ejection fraction (C= 0.92 ± 0.02 and S= 0.89 ± 0.04, P=0.01). CONCLUSION: The rats exposed to cigarette smoke had a reduction in left ventricular systolic function, although their myocardial function was preserved.

This letter reports on a process to prepare nanostructured PbTiO3 (PT) at room temperature with photoluminescence (PL) emission in the visible range. This process is based on the high-energy mechanical milling of ultrafine PbTiO3 powder. The results suggest that high-energy mechanical milling modifies the particle's structure, resulting in localized states in an interfacial region between the crystalline PT and the amorphous PT. These localized states are believed to be responsible for the PL obtained with short milling times. When long milling times are employed, the amorphous phase that is formed causes PL behavior. An alternative method to process nanostructured wide-band-gap semiconductors with active optical properties such as PL is described in this letter. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Nitrogen implantation into Ti alloys at higher temperatures improves their mechanical and corrosion resistance properties by forming a thicker nitride layer. In this paper, two different sets of Ti-6Al-4V samples were plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII)-treated using nitrogen plasma, varying the treatment time from 30 to 150 min (800 degrees C) and the process temperature from 400 degrees C to 800 degrees C (t = 60 min). Nanoindentation measurements of the PIII-treated samples at 800 C during 150 min showed the highest hardness value, 24 GPa, which is about four times bigger than untreated sample hardness. The N penetration at these conditions reached approximately 150 nm as analyzed by Auger spectroscopy. on the other hand, the lowest passive current density (3 x 10(-7) A. cm(-2)) was obtained for a PIII-treated sample during 30 min at higher temperature (800 degrees C). The corrosion resistance of this sample is almost the same as for the untreated specimen. Corrosion behavior evidenced that in strong oxidizing media, all PIII-treated samples are more corrosion resistant than the untreated one. PIII processing at higher temperatures promotes smoothing of the sample surface as observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction analyses of the untreated samples identified the two typical Ti phases, Ti alpha and Ti beta. After the implantation, Ti2N and TiO2 phases were also detected.
