The polymeric precursor method was successfully used to synthesize CoxZn7-xSbO12 (x = 0-7) powders. Pigments were evaluated using colorimetry, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis and infrared spectroscopy. The optical band gap values vary with the Co2+ substitution. These results suggest that the concomitant presence of Co and Zn in the spinel lattice leads to the rupture of the Vegard law, as well as other properties of the studied system, such as unit cell volume. The Co-richer samples display a higher absorbance than the Co-lean samples. The high absorption of the Co7Sb2O12 sample at most of the visible region makes this compound a candidate for a black pigment. It was shown that color depends on the site where the chromophore ion is located, in agreement with the ligand field theory. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A combined experimental and theoretical study was conducted to analyze the photoluminescence (PL) properties of ordered and disordered CaWO4 (CW) and CaMoO4 (CM) powders. Two mechanisms were found to be responsible for photoluminescence emission in CW and CM powders. The first one, in the disordered powders, was caused by oxygen complex vacancies [MO3 center dot V-O(x)], [MO3 center dot V-O(center dot)] and [MO3 center dot V-O(center dot center dot)], where M=W or Mo, which leads to additional levels in the band gap. The second mechanism, in ordered powders, was caused by an intrinsic slight distortion of the [WO4] or [MoO4] tetrahedral in the short range. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

We report on a metastable light-induced volume expansion in Ge25+xGa10-xS65 glasses under irradiation with band gap (UV) light, which can result in recording of relief gratings on their surface in the case of irradiation with two interfering beams. We propose a mechanism for the expansion, which is based on the light-induced change in the polarizability of secondary (van der Waals type) bonds and the effect of this change on primary (covalent type) bonds of the glass. The effect is suggested to be due to an interference of electrons, which belong to a chalcogen atom and participate in the formation of secondary and primary bonds, respectively. We suggest that a minimum point of the Lennard-Jones potential, which corresponds to the equilibrium position of a chalcogen atom is shifted in the course of irradiation to a larger interatomic distance. This shift causes a volume expansion and allows a diffusion of chalcogen atoms into the irradiated area. We show that light-induced polymerization of the glass network is an important attribute of the light-induced volume expansion.

The influence of the substrate temperature on the structural features and opto-electrical properties of undoped and indium-doped ZnO thin films deposited by pyrosol process was investigated. The addition of indium induces a drastic decrease (by a factor approximate to 10(10) for samples deposited at 300 degreesC) in the electrical resistivity of films, the lowest electrical resistivity (6 mOmega-cm) being observed for the film deposited at 450 degreesC. Films are highly transparent (>80%) in the Vis-NIR ranges, and the optical band gap exhibits a blue shift (from 3.29 to 3.33 eV) for the In-doped films deposited at increasing temperature. Preferential orientation of the ZnO crystallites with the c-axis perpendicular to the substrate surface and an anisotropic morphology of the nanoporous structure was observed for films growth at 300 and 350 degreesC. We discuss the nature of visible photoluminescence (PL) at room temperature in amorphous calcium titanate in the light of the results of recent experimental and quantum mechanical theoretical studies. Our investigation of the electronic structure involved the use of first-principle molecular calculations to simulate the variation of the electronic structure in the calcium titanate crystalline phase, which is known to have a direct band gap, and we also made an in-depth examination of amorphous calcium titanate. The results of our theoretical calculations of amorphous calcium titanate indicate that the formation of fivefold coordination in the amorphous system may introduce delocalized electronic levels in the highest occupied and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals. These delocalized electronic levels are related to the formation of a tail in the absorbance spectrum curve. The results indicate that amorphous calcium titanate has the conduction band near the band gap dominated by Ca states contribution. Experimental optical absorption measurements showed the presence of a tail. These results are interpreted by the nature of these exponential optical edges and tails, associated with defects promoted by the disordered structure of the amorphous material. We associate them with delocalized states in the band gap. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Ca0.95Sm0.05TiO3 (CT:Sm) powder was prepared by the polymeric precursor method (PPM). Order-disorder at short and long range has been investigated by means of Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and photoluminescence emission (PL) experimental techniques. The broad PL band and the Sm emission spectrum measured at room temperature indicate the increase of structural order with annealing temperature. The measured PL emission reveals that the PL intensity changes with the degree of disorder in the CT: Sm. The electronic structures were performed by the ab initio periodic method in the DFT level with the hybrid nonlocal B3LYP approximation. Theoretical results are analyzed in terms of DOS, charge densities, and Mulliken charges. Localized levels into the band gap of the CT: Sm material favor the creation of the electron-hole pair, supporting the observed room-temperature PL phenomenon.

Investigations of photo-induced structural transformations (PST) and related changes of optical parameters in the light-sensitive amorphous chalcogenides were extended to composite layers, which consist of a wide band-gap material and an active material, Se60Te40 with a smaller band gap. Photo-stimulated interdiffusion and/or crystallization in layered Se0.6Tc0.4/As0.6Se0.94 and Se0.6Te0.4/SiOx were investigated with respect to their dependence on the compositional modulation of the multilayer at scale-dimensions (similar to3-10nm). It was established that PST due to the interdiffusion and crystallization can be efficiently operated by the composition of the adjacent layers of the multilayer which results in the change of the transformation rate and of the optical relief type (positive or negative). The comparison with a single Se0.6Te0.4 layer and with the known data for amorphous-Se/As2S3 multilayers supports the advantages of composite layers for amplitude-phase optical recording. Thin films of barium and strontium titanate (BST), synthesized by the polymeric precursor solution and spin coated on [Pt (140nm)/Ti (10 nM)/SiO2(1000 nm)/Si] substrates were found to be photoluminescent at room temperature when heat treated below 973 K, i.e. before their crystallization. First principles quantum mechanical techniques, based on density functional theory (DFT) were employed to study the electronic structure of two periodic models: one is standing for the crystalline BST thin film and the other one for the structurally disordered thin film. The aim is to compare the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the crystalline and disordered thin films with their UV-vis spectra and with their computed electronic structures. The calculations show that new localized states are created inside the band gap of the crystalline model, as predicted by the UV-vis spectra. The study of the charge repartition in the structure before and after deformation of the periodic model shows that a charge gradient appears among the titanate clusters. This charge gradient, together with the new localized levels, gives favorable conditions for the trapping of holes and electrons in the structure, and thus to a radiative recombination process. Our models are not only consistent with the experimental data, they also allow to explain the relations between structural disorder and photoluminescence at room temperature. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Aluminum doped zinc oxide polycrystalline thin films (AZO) were prepared by sol-gel dip-coating process. The sol was prepared from an ethanolic solution of zinc acetate using lithium hydroxide or succinic acid as hydrolytic catalyst. The quantity of aluminum in the sol was varied from 1 to 10 mol%. The structural characteristics studied by X-ray diffractometry were complemented by resistivity measurements and UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy. The films are transparent from the near ultraviolet to the near infrared, presenting an absorption cut-off at almost 290 nm, irrespective of the nature of the catalyst and doping level. The best conductors were obtained for the AZO films containing 3 mol% of aluminum, prepared under acidic and basic catalysis and sintered at 450 degreesC. Their optical band-gap of 4.4 eV calculated from the absorption cut-off is larger than the values for band-gap widening predicted by the standard model for polar semiconductors. These polycrystalline films are textured with preferential orientation of grains along the wurtzite c-axis or the (100) direction. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Structural and electronic properties of the bulk and relaxed surfaces (TiO2 and PbO terminated) of cubic PbTiO3 are investigated by means of periodic quantum-mechanical calculations based on density functional theory. It is observed that the difference in surface energies is small and relaxations effects are most prominent for Ti and Ph surface atoms. The electronic structure shows a splitting of the lowest conduction bands for the TiO2 terminated surface and of the highest valence bands for the PbO terminated slab. The calculated indirect band gap is: 3.18, 2.99 and 3.03 eV for bulk, TiO2 and PbO terminations, respectively. The electron density maps show that the Ti-O bond has a partial covalent character, whereas the Pb-O bonds present a very low covalency. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Stoichiometric CaWO4 and SrWO4 thin films were synthesized using a chemical solution processing, the so-called polymeric precursor method. In this soft chemical method, soluble precursors such as strontium carbonate, calcium carbonate and tungstic acid, as starting materials, were mixed in an aqueous solution. The thin films were deposited on glass substrates by means of the spinning technique. The surface morphology and crystal structure of the thin films were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Nucleation stages and surface morphology evolution of the thin films on glass substrates were studied by atomic force microscopy. The films nucleate at 300 degreesC, after the coalescence of small nuclei into larger grains yielding a homogeneous dense surface. XRD characterization of these films showed that the CaWO4 and SrWO4 phases crystallize at 400 degreesC from an inorganic amorphous phase. No intermediate crystalline phase was identified. The optical properties were also studied. It was found that CaWO4 and SrWO4 thin films have an optical band gap, E-gap=5.27 and 5.78 eV, respectively, of a direct transition nature. The excellent microstructural quality and chemical homogeneity confirmed that this soft solution processing provides an inexpensive and environmentally friendly route for the preparation of CaWO4 and SrWO4 thin films.
