Expression and function of fibroblast growth factor 10 and its receptor, fibroblast growth factor receptor 213, in bovine follicles

Some fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) affect ovarian follicle cell growth and/or differentiation. Whereas many FGFs activate several FGF receptors, FGF7 and FGF10 primarily activate only one, FGFR2B. As FGF7 is produced by bovine theca cells and acts on granulosa cells, we tested the hypothesis that FGF10 may also play a role in folliculogenesis in cattle. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction demonstrated the presence of FGF10 mRNA in the oocytes and theca cells of the antral follicles, as well as in the preantral follicles. FGF10 protein was detected by immunohistochemistry in the oocytes of the preantral and antral follicles, and in the granulosa and theca cells of the antral follicles. FGF10 expression in theca cells changed during follicle development; mRNA abundance decreased with increasing follicular estradiol concentration in healthy follicles, and was lowest in highly atretic follicles. Culturing of granulosa cells in serum-free medium revealed FSH regulation of FGF10 receptor expression. The addition of FGF10 to cultured granulosa cells decreased the level of estradiol but did not alter cell proliferation. These data support a role for FGF10 in signaling to granulosa cells from theca cells and/or the oocyte.

The reproductive hiology and cycle of Rioraja agassizi (Muller and Henle, 1841) (Chondrichthyes : Rajidae) in southeastern Brazil, SW Atlantic Ocean

Specimens of Rioraja agassizi were collected Lit Guaruja pier, São Paulo State, Brazil, from March 2005 to March 2006. A total of: 275 males were captured. Based on the analysis of the clasper length, gonad weight, clasper gland length, alar thorns and lobule diameter, the size-at-maturity was estimated to be 32 cm. There were 1049 females in the record. Size-at-maturity was calculated in 40 cm. Sexual resting females were observed. Gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indexes varied significantly in both sexes throughout the year. However, ovulation, egg-laying and presence of sperm in the seminal vesicle were observed all year round. For this reason, an annual cycle with at least one peak in the sexual activity is proposed for this species.

Size at maturity of Atlantoraja platana (Gunther, 1880) (Chondrichthyes : Rajidae : Arhynchobatinae) in the south-west Atlantic Ocean

The sexual development of Atlantoraja platana from the south-west Atlantic Ocean was analysed. According to the reproductive variables considered for both sexes, males were found to mature at 620 mm and females at 715 mm total length. Valores normativos e aptidão funcional em homens de 60 a 69 anos de idade

O objetivo deste estudo foi desenvolver valores normativos para a aptidão funcional e o índice de aptidão funcional geral (IAFG) para homens de 60 a 69 anos. Foram avaliados 112 idosos residentes em Florianópolis/SC ou Rio Claro/SP, por meio da bateria de testes da AAHPERD, que realizavam atividade física sistematizada, supervisionada e regularmente, há pelo menos 6 meses. A bateria é composta por cinco testes que avaliam a flexibilidade, coordenação, agilidade/equilíbrio dinâmico, força e capacidade aeróbia. Para a análise dos dados e construção dos valores normativos das aptidões funcionais e do IAFG, utilizou-se o cálculo de percentis. Foram utilizados como pontos de corte os percentis 20, 40, 60 e 80 para gerar as classificações: muito fraco, fraco, regular, bom e muito bom, respectivamente. O desenvolvimento de valores normativos pode servir como referência aos profissionais, para que possam melhor avaliar, orientar e prescrever atividade física para homens idosos.

Variations in dynamic knee valgus and gluteus medius onset timing in non-athletic females related to hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle

Habitat of juvenile Caribbean reef sharks, Carcharhinus perezi, at two oceanic insular marine protected areas in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean: Fernando de Noronha Archipelago and Atol das Rocas, Brazil

Habitat of juvenile Caribbean reef sharks, Carcharhinus perezi (Carcharhinidae), was identified using fishing surveys and capture of immature specimens at two Brazilian insular sites in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean, Fernando de Noronha Archipelago and Atol das Rocas. Standardized sampling at Fernando de Noronha indicated that parturition occurred from February to April and that a wide depth-range (at least 5-30 m) along the insular shelf was used by immature sharks throughout the year. The catch-per-unit effort of C. perezi was significantly higher inside than outside a marine protected area at this location, suggesting that these sharks are more common in pans of the reef least disturbed by human activities. More limited sampling at Atol das Rocas suggested that juvenile C. perezi occurred at similar depths and utilized similar substrate as sharks at Fernando de Noronha. These findings suggest that successful conservation and management of this economically important, protected species will need to include conservation of habitat around insular reef systems. Aspects of the reproductive biology of the shortfin mako, Isurus oxyrinchus (Elasmobranchii Lamnidae), in the Southeastern region of Brazil

Quatro úteros provenientes de quatro fêmeas prenhas e dois indivíduos recém-nascidos de anequim, Isurus oxyrinchus, foram coletados na região Sudeste do Brasil durante os meses de setembro a novembro de 1993 e 1994. Todos os embriões estavam bem desenvolvidos, próximos ao estágio de nascimento, apresentando a dentição e órgãos internos bastante desenvolvidos. O comprimento total desses embriões variou entre 64,5 e 72,0 cm, e o maior número de embriões observado no interior de uma única fêmea foi 20. As observações aqui realizadas confirmam a oofagia como forma de nutrição dos embriões dessa espécie e sua periodicidade. A presença de dentes no estômago dos embriões sugere que a substituição dos dentes se inicia na fase uterina.

The influence of an abdominal support for a dental stool in the distributions and electrical activity of the longissimus and the superior trapezius muscle in dentists

This study evaluated the influence an abdominal support attached to a traditional stool, of those used by dentists, has on the body's distribution of the electrical activity of the superior trapezius and the longissimus thoracic muscles of dental students during the execution of a clinical procedure. The results showed no significant difference in the body's distribution in the seat and backrest, but did reveal there was a weight discharge of 3.1 +/- 1.9% of dentist's body weight in the abdominal support. The 9 o'clock position proved to be the best position to perform clinical procedures. It was also observed that the position was closer to the body's axis.

Scaling limit of weakly bound triatomic states

The usefulness of a scale-independent approach to identify Efimov states in three-body systems is shown by comparing such an approach with a realistic calculation in the case of three helium atoms. We show that the scaling limit is realized in practice in this case, and suggest its application to study other similar systems, including the case where two kinds of atoms are mixed. We also consider the observed large scattering length of the Rb-87 dimer to estimate the critical value of the ground-state energy of the corresponding trimer (greater than or equal to 1.5 mK), in order to allow for one Efimov state above the ground state.
