Introduction: Hypertrophy of the adenoids and palatine tonsils is the second most frequent cause of upper respiratory obstruction and, consequently, mouth breathing in children. Prolonged mouth breathing leads to muscular and postural alterations which, in turn, cause dentosketetal changes. Objective: the aim of this study was to determine muscular, functional and dentoskeletal alterations in children aged 3-6 years. Materials and methods: Seventy-three children, including 44 with tonsil hypertrophy and 29 controls, were submitted to otorhinolaryngologic, speech pathologic and orthodontic assessment. Results: Otorhinolaryngologic evaluation revealed a higher incidence of nasal obstruction, snoring, mouth breathing, apneas, nocturnal hypersalivation, itchy nose, repeated tonsillitis and bruxism in children with tonsils hypertrophy. Speech pathologic assessment showed a higher incidence of open lip and lower tongue position, and of hypotonia of the upper and lower lips, tongue and buccinator muscle in these children, accompanied by important impairment in mastication and deglutition. Orthodontic evaluation demonstrated a higher incidence of lower mandible position in relation to the cranial base, a reduction in lower posterior facial height, transverse atresia of the palate, and a dolicofacial pattern. Conclusion: Postural and functional alterations anticipate dentoskeletal changes, except for the facial pattern. Postural alterations and the skeletal pattern seem to play an important role in infant dentofacial growth. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Samples of tongue and bucal mucosa surfaces were obtained from six healthy subjects with the purpose of isolating S. salivarius. It was verified that 47 out of 48 S. salivarius strains produced bacteriocin-like substances against at least one of the indicator species: Actinomyces viscosus, Rothia dentocariosa, Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguis. The method employed to test for bacteriocin production was that of deferred antagonism. The results showed that there was a high antagonism against R. dentocariosa, S. pyogenes and A. viscosus; extremely low against S. mutans and S. sanguis and no inhibition for S. aureus.

Teiid lizards are intesive foragers supposed to rely lagerly on chemoreception for prey detection, an ability that can be modified by previous feeding experiences. We investigated the ability of juvenile lizards, Tupinambis teguixin, in discriminate prey from non-prey odors as well as the effects of recent diet on these ability. Tegu lizards were able to discriminate prey odors and this ability probably is inate. The effect of recent diet was analysed through optimal foraging models and our results does not support in a broad sense the predictions made by theoretical models.

Protein A containing Staphylococcus aureus was used to develop a coagglutination (COA) test for the detection and typing of foot and mouth disease virus (FMDV) O, A and C serotypes in infected cells and tissues. Different batches and amounts of guinea pig anti-FMDV sera were assessed to optimize the preparation of COA conjugates. The sensitivity and specificity of the COA Test for the detection of FMDV O, A and C serotypes and heterologous viruses was also characterized. Comparison between the COA Test and complement fixation test for the detection and typing of FMDV obtained from extracts of tongue epithelial tissues from infected cattle revealed high agreement in the results and indicated a potential application of the COA Test for the direct diagnosis of viruses.

Over the last decades, technical-scientific advances of oncology have brought about an increased survival rate for cancer patients. As a result, oncologists have detected an increased number of patients presenting with other neoplasms. This research aimed to analyze factors related to demography and to the anatomic site in patients having a FPT of the mouth who developed a SPT. Medical charts of 848 patients neoplasm admitted for treatment at the Head and Neck Surgery Department of the Hospital do Cancer, Antonio Candido Camargo, Brazil, from January of 1984 to December, were analysed. of these, 12 6 developed a SPT. 49.21 % were from 51 to 65 years of age, while 83.33% were of the male gender and Caucasian. Regarding FPT site 38.89% were of the tongue, and 28.5% were of the floor of the mouth. The esophagus, excepting skin (13.49%), was more often subject to SPT (11.9%), of these 74.6% were metachronic, 15.87% simultaneous and 9.52% synchronous.

Background: Halitosis has been correlated with the concentration of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) produced in the oral cavity by metabolic activity of bacteria colonizing the periodontal area and the dorsum of the tongue. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is some relationship between the presence of N-benzoyl-DL-arginine-2-napthylamide (BANA)positive species Treponema denticola, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Bacteroides forsythus and clinical and oral malodor parameters. Methods: Twenty-one subjects (21 to 59 years old) with probing depths (PD) >3.0 mm and 20 subjects (21 to 63 years old) with PD less than or equal to3.0 mm (controls) participated. The quality of the mouth air was assessed organoleptically, and a portable sulfide monitor was used to measure the concentration of VSC. Clinical parameters, plaque index (PI) and gingival index (GI), were obtained from 6 teeth. Samples for BANA test were taken from the dorsal surface of the tongue, saliva, and the 6 reference teeth. Results: the scores of PI, GI, subgingival samples that tested positive for BANA hydrolyzing species, organoleptic ratings, and VSC values were significantly higher in the subjects with PD >3.0 mm (P <0.01, Mann-Whitney U test). There was a correlation between BANA hydrolysis by subgingival plaque bacteria and VSC values (r = 0.55, P <0.01), and between GI and VSC values (r = 0.48, P <0.05) in patients with PD >3.0 mm. There was no significant correlation between these parameters in the control group. Conclusion: These results confirm that the BANA hydrolyzing bacteria in the subgingival plaque are an important source of malodor production in the oral cavity.

Taking into consideration that glutatione S-transferase (GST) and cellular proliferation play a crucial role during carcinogenesis, the goal of this study was to investigate the expression of placental GST, called GST-P, and proliferating cellular nuclear antigen (PCNA) by means of immunohistochemistry during rat tongue carcinogenesis induced by 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4NQO). This is a useful model for studying oral squamous cell carcinoma phase by phase. Male Wistar rats were distributed into three groups of 10 animals each and treated with 50 ppm 4NQO solution by drinking water for 4, 12 or 20 weeks. Ten animals were used as negative control. GST-P positive foci were detected in non-neoplastic oral cells at 4 weeks of 4NQO administration. In the same way, GST-P positive cells were detected in pre-neoplastic lesions and squamous cell carcinomas induced after 12 and 20 weeks-treatment, respectively. None of the control animals expressed GST-P positive cells. Regarding cellular proliferation, PCNA positive nuclei were higher at 12 and 20 weeks following 4NQO exposure (p < 0.05) when compared to negative control. These results suggest that the expression of GST-P is correlated with cellular proliferation, in which GST-P is associated with risk and progression of oral cancer, whereas PCNA is closely involved during neoplastic conversion. Paracoccidioidomycosis (South American blastomycosis) is an uncommon, progressive systemic mycosis, virtually only seen in persons who have visited Latin America. Reports of oral lesions are extremely rare in the English-language literature. Thirty-six adults with oral lesions as the first sign of paracoccidioidomycosis are described; this appears to be the largest series in the dental literature. All had chronic proliferative mulberry-like ulcerated oral lesions; the diagnosis was confirmed histologically. The gingiva or alveolar process was the typical site, but lesions were also seen particularly on the palate and lip. Most of the patients proved to have detectable pulmonary involvement. Patients with lesions in the oropharynx, tongue, or floor of mouth all had confirmed pulmonary lesions.

Background: In recent years, important advances have occurred in the determination of diagnostic criteria for the disease diabetes mellitus and in new strategies for its treatment. The purpose of this research was to develop a new method for diabetes diagnosis by microscopic and cytomorphometric analyses of the oral epithelium. Methods: the smears were obtained from three distinct oral sites: buccal mucosa (cheek), tongue dorsum, and floor of the mouth in 10 control individuals and 10 type II diabetic patients. The oral smears were stained with Papanicolaou EA-36 solution. The nuclear (NA) and cytoplasmic (CA) areas were evaluated from 50 integral cells predominant in each oral site by the use of the KS 300(TM) image analysis system (Carl Zeiss, Germany), by which the cytoplasmic/nuclear ratio (C/N) was calculated. Results: the results showed that: (i) the epithelial cells of the diabetic group exhibited figures of binucleation and occasional karyorrhexis in all layers; (ii) the NA was markedly higher (P<0.05) in the diabetic group; (iii) the CA did not exhibit a statistically significant difference (P>0.05) between these two groups; and (iv) the C/N mean was 37.4% lower in the type II diabetic group. Conclusions: These results associated with clinical observations suggest that diabetes mellitus can produce alterations in oral epithelial cells, detectable by microscopy and cytomorphometry, which can be used in the diagnosis of this disease.

Introduction Oral mucositis (OM) is a significant early complication of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). This phase III randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study was designed to compare the ability of 2 different low level GaAlAs diode lasers (650 nm and 780 nm) to prevent oral mucositis in HCT patients conditioned with chemotherapy or chemoradiotherapy.Materials and methods Seventy patients were enrolled and randomized into 1 of 3 treatment groups: 650 nm laser, 780 nm laser or placebo. All active laser treatment patients received daily direct laser treatment to the lower labial mucosa, right and left buccal mucosa, lateral and ventral surfaces of the tongue, and floor of mouth with energy densities of 2 J/cm(2). Study treatment began on the first day of conditioning and continued through day +2 post HCT. Mucositis and oral pain was measured on days 0, 4, 7, 11, 14, 18, and 21 post HCT.Results the 650 nm wavelength reduced the severity of oral mucositis and pain scores. Low level laser therapy was well-tolerated and no adverse events were noted.Discussion While these results are encouraging, further study is needed to truly establish the efficacy of this mucositis prevention strategy. Future research needs to determine the effects of modification of laser parameters (e.g., wavelength, fluence, repetition rate of energy delivery, etc.) on the effectiveness of LLE laser to prevent OM.

Mast cells in the tongue of the bat (Artibeus lituratus) show a well-developed Golgi area and abundant mitochondria in the granule-free perinuclear cytoplasm. Rough endoplasmic reticulum profiles, free ribosomes, mitochondria, bundles of filaments and a great number of secretory granules are found throughout the remaining cytoplasm. The granules, of various shapes and sizes, are simple containing an electron-dense, homogeneous matrix, coarse particles or cylindrical scrolls, or combinations (cylindrical scrolls with either electron-dense, homogeneous matrix or coarse particle contents). Up to now, scroll-containing granules have been considered to be a unique feature of human mast cells.

Objective: To evaluate the oral features in individuals with oral-facial-digital syndrome type 1 (OFD 1), previously diagnosed by the Genetic Sector of the Hospital of Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies of the University of São Paulo (HRAC-USP).Design: Twelve patients with OFD 1 were examined clinically and radiographically; their medical files were also evaluated. Results: Associated oral malformations were observed in all patients (100%). The most frequent findings were tongue hamartomas, multiple buccal frena, asymmetric lips, asymmetric tongue, and bilateral maxillary gingival swelling. Interestingly, atrophy of the maxillary midline frenum was also observed in all the individuals examined. Conclusions: Several extra and intraoral alterations were observed in patients with OFD 1. The authors suggest the inclusion of atrophy of the maxillary midline frenum as a commonly found characteristic of OFD 1.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the cell proliferation rate and possible effects of cigarette smoking on the oral mucosa lining through analysis of silver-stained nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) in exfoliative cytology specimens.STUDY DESIGN: Exfoliative cytology was performed on the left side of the border of the tongue and of the floor of the mouth in 25 smoking patients and 25 nonsmoking patients. The inclusion criterion for smokers was the consumption of more than 20 cigarettes per day for a minimum of 30 years.RESULTS: The slides were stained by histochemical AgNOR method. In the nonsmoking group the mean number of AgNORs per nucleus was 2.732 +/- 0.236 in the tongue border and 2.918 +/- 0.195 in the floor of the mouth. In smoking patients the mean number of AgNORs per nucleus was 3.372 +/- 0.375 in the tongue border and 3.245 +/- 0.237 in the floor of the mouth.CONCLUSION. The results suggest higher cell proliferation quantified by the histochemical AgNOR technique in exfoliative cytology specimens obtained from the oral mucosa lining of smokers presenting no clinical alterations.

An outbreak of botulism was detected in goats in the semiarid region of Brazil. In a flock of 460 goats, 38 does were affected and 37 died. Kids and younger goats were not affected. The main clinical signs were flaccid tetraparesis leading to tetraplegia that was often accompanied by twisted neck, tongue paralysis, and muscle tremors. At the time of the visit, 4 out of 11 affected goats were recumbent. Ambulatory goats had uncoordinated and swaying gaits with hypometria and weakness, mainly of the hind limbs. Two recumbent and four ambulatory goats showed twisted neck. Two recumbent goats were euthanized and necropsied. Non-significant gross and histologic lesions were observed. Samples of the liver, gut and rumen content were collected from the two goats and examined for botulinum toxins using the mouse serum neutralization test. The three samples from one goat were positive for type C toxin. Marked osteophagia was observed when the goats had access to bones in the pasture, and the farmer mentioned that osteophagia was common among goats of the flock. A sample of the plant Hybantus ipecaconha, the most abundant forage available for the goats, contained 2800 mg/kg of Ca and 450 mg/kg of P. One soil sample contained 58.12 mg/kg of Ca and 2.02 mg/kg of P. It was concluded that in this outbreak, botulism was associated with osteophagia probably due to phosphorus deficiency. Most lizards feed on a variety of food items that may differ dramatically in their physical and behavioral characteristics. Several lizard families are known to feed upon hard-shelled prey (durophagy). Yet, specializations toward true molluscivory have been documented for only a few species. As snails are hard and brittle food items, it has been suggested that a specialized cranial morphology, high bite forces, and an adapted feeding strategy are important for such lizards. Here we compare head and skull morphology, bite forces, and feeding kinematics of a snail-crushing teiid lizard (Dracaena guianensis) with those in a closely related omnivorous species (Tupinambis merianae). Our data show that juvenile D. guianensis differ from T. merianae in having bigger heads and greater bite forces. Adults, however, do not differ in bite force. A comparison of feeding kinematics in adult Dracaena and Tupinambis revealed that Dracaena typically use more transport cycles, yet are more agile in manipulating snails. During transport, the tongue plays an important role in manipulating and expelling shell fragments before swallowing. Although Dracaena is slow, these animals are very effective in crushing and processing hard-shelled prey. J. Exp. Zool. 317A:371381, 2012. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
